I have a folder called Time is a Flat Circle in which I collect evidence of humanity. Here is most of them.

Okayokayokayokaybut "My hand will wear out but the inscription will remain" is kind of a power line BEFORE you factor in that it is, in fact, over a thousand years old.

It’s always good to spend a few moments, on a quiet day, looking through the Family album.

if a character means enough to me i will truly never stop thinking about them. i just retire them into a little back room in my brain and periodically bring them out to stare at them under a little light

when a pelican bites you there's no malice in their eyes. they aren't upset at you. they are just hungry and want to see if you fit in their mouths. and if you don't then it's no problem and everything is fine. and if you do then well i guess your fate is sealed but that's ok it's a beautiful animal

Okay, see, I knew about the capybara gif:

But I didn’t know that they really are That Dense, All The Time. The same way sharks will bite anything that might be a seal, just in case, these birdbrains will apparently test just about anything for beak size.

Behold a short list of bad ideas:

Human foot is not food, bird.

That is clearly bigger than your entire body.

...You do know what a bear cub is, right? Right??

That is a BICYCLE SEAT.

That’s it; arrested for bird crimes.

The problem with shipping a niche ship: you read all the fanfiction in one afternoon and if you want some more you have to write it yourself.

The problem with shipping a popular ship: 16,835 results on AO3. You start playing with tags and sorting through it, full of determination, confident that with so many fanfics you’re bound to find something you’ll like. Two hours, 30 instances of awful writing, 8 squick-outs,13 wtf AUs and 157 just plain uninteresting later you have to rush back to the canon to even remember why you liked the ship in the first place.

双面三异绣 shuāng miàn sān yì xiù  is a new genre of suzhou double-sided embroidery. It is done on both sides, but the patterns, stitches and colors are different, hence the name 双面三异绣( literally double-sided triple difference embroidery). It enables the viewer to appreciate the image of traditional chinese embroidery art with different patterns, stitches and colors on one embroidery.

Embroidery is a high art form

Okay… but how does the fiber change colors? I’ve been doing needlework fo decades. I’ve never met any sort of embroidery floss that was a different color on the back than it was on the front. (Don’t throw variegated at me. You can see this shirt ain’t variegated.)

The stitches are smaller on one side! Ive done something similar by couching one thread with a different colored in a satin stitch worked in one direction. With silk threads being so thin, you could make long satin stitches with one color on side a, but you wouldn’t be able to see the very tiny stitches made on side b. Then you do the same thing vice versa with side b, giving you two different colors on each side

It could be more complicated, idk, I couldn’t really find tutorials for it, but that’s how I do my double sided embroideries. it doesn’t look as good but here’s how the couching method looks when it’s done!

Love the random censorship in Victorian novels. Mr. ------- came down from -----shire in the summer of 18--. Who? Where? When? Wouldn't you like to know, book boy

There was a footnote about this in the annotated Jane Austen I’ve been reading. I can’t find it again right now (will post if I manage to come across it again), but if I remember correctly, this kind of thing happened because people were so aware of who the most important landowners were in each county and where the military regiments attached to each shire were stationed when that it would break disbelief if an author said something like, “Sir So-and-so was the Earl of Shropshire,” or whatever, when the reader knew that the Earls of Shropshire were the Such-and-such family. So the dashes formed double duty of not having the fictional person contradict anything the reader might know about the real people in the real place, and avoiding making it seem like the fictional people are veiled commentaries on any real people.

Austen didn’t tend to censor where her characters were from as they weren’t high rank enough to bother with, but she censored the counties attached to her military regiments so that she could play fast and loose with the regiment’s movements and no real regiment would be slandered by having Wickham’s behavior associated with them.

Liver of Piacenza - bronze model of a sheep’s liver for the practice of Haruspicy -  Etruscan - 2nd century BCE

In ancient Babylon the liver was considered the source of the blood and hence the basis of life itself. From this belief, the Babylonians thought they could discover the will of the gods by examining the livers of carefully selected sacrificial sheep. Haruspicy in ancient Italy originated with the Etruscans, but was incorporated into Roman culture. Roman haruspicy was a form of communication with the gods. This form of Roman divination allowed humans to discern the attitudes of the gods and react in a way that would maintain harmony between the human and divine worlds.  This bronze model of a sheep’s liver was found by chance by a farmer in 1877. Names of Etruscan gods are etched into the surface and organized into different sections.

"you only deserve food and shelter if you contribute to society" says people living in countries where nobody's labor actually feeds or benefits their neighbors anymore but exclusively benefits the companies keeping the food and shelter behind the artificial paywalls

You're not nomads relying on each other to hunt and gather anymore, you're talking about stocking shelves for fucking wal marts

And even the oldest societies on earth all took care of the elderly or sick anyway
