Handwriting - Scooter Dudes

WRITER’S CHOICE

Reviewed by Alex R

In a Word: Wimpcore

For an album with the title Scooter Dudes and tracks titled “Walmart” and “Naruto” – it’s not half bad! In fact… it’s pretty good (as in really good.) Handwriting have crafted what could be the next emo “classic” (if such a thing exists.) They sound like they should probably be signed to CYLS or Broken World (if you catch my drift.) Loudly complaining about everyday issues is what emo is all about, and this is exactly that. This album should probably be a pop hit, I mean if relatability is what major labels are looking for, the opening lines of “Walmart” (a loud declaration that “SOMETIMES I GO TO THE SUPER WALMART JUST TO KILL TIME”) are possibly the most relatable lyrics I’ve heard in a while. I only say possibly because a few minutes later I heard “Video Games” and the lyrics “DANNY DEVITO WOULDNT PUT UP WITH THIS! I’M NOT SAD ANYMORE, I CAN’T PUT UP WITH IT!  FUCK YEAH! WHAT THE FUCK!? FUCK YEAH?! WHAT THE FUCK?!” spoke even more to me as a confused and grumpy teenager. Handwriting have really taken the subdued wimpy anger of all the twinkle emo kids and condensed that into shouty rage poetry, kind of like Tiny Moving Parts but less sad and more angsty.  Snappy guitar lines & shouted drivel propel this album through its short scenes at light speed. At times Scooter Dudes reminds me of when you see a longboarder try to ride down a hill that’s obviously too steep; you watch them pick up speed and then they look back to sneer at their pals… only to hit a rock and fall face first into the pavement. That’s what this album makes me picture; its equal parts graceful, dorky, and shamelessly hilarious. Every line of every song warrants a snicker and a “same lol,” I dunno whether that reflects poorly on me or the album (probably the album) but it’s certainly true.

Regardless of what overused slang this album warrants, it’s damn good. Like, up-there-with-Katy-Perry good. Truly legendary; L337 5747U5. I’m going to go play Animal Crossing now while listening to this, ‘cause that’s what a REAL emo kid would do.
