“Just think about text messaging,” Evans said. “That’s the way I communicate with my friends now. If one them calls me I’m like, ‘Why didn’t you just text me?’ And that’s pretty new. Cellphones haven’t been around that long – I remember when people didn’t have them, really – and the Internet has totally changed the world in a relatively short period of time. Think of how strange all of it would be to someone from the 1940s who looks around and wonders what happened to all the things that were important to them.”

If you say "art" people just think paintings in museums, if you say "media" it's too vague and clinical, if you say "content" you sound like a YouTube terms and conditions corpo-ghoul, if you say "crafts", plural, it sounds like you mean macaroni art and hand turkeys, if you say "craft", singular, you sound like you sell pussy candles and migratory bird feathers on Etsy, if you say "creative expression" you sound like a lotion-handed Human Resources weasel straight out of a Mike Judge cartoon. How have we managed to completely drain the linguistic well when it comes to discussing individual and collective cultural creativity, aka Capital A Art. It's dire!

Ok, doing great on the invertebrates and upper trophic levels, but it looks like we're at saturation for macrofauna, what we need is a lot more substrate- more rocks, more water, more foliage in general but ESPECIALLY GRASSES AND SEDGES. I'm not aiming for a specific ecosystem, just aiming for enough space for everyone, and that means building terra and the root systems to hold it in place.

Alright folks let's gooooo!

I think at some point in time we need to sit down and start explaining to artist who want to make a career out of art that there are FAR more options than just "living off of commissions" and "posting my art online and praying I get paid for it".

There's also far more options than joining a specific, difficult to get into industry.

I don't know where this idea that the only way to make a living off of your art online is to simply do commission work, become a social media star, or join an industry comes from. I've fallen into this pitfall before as well, but I don't understand how it came to be.

I broke out of this mindset, though after I started helping a working artist. She had been an artist for over 40 years and started at a young age, and her main source of income? Doing local craft and garden shows. She had owned a gallery, done gallery work, done charity work, and now mainly works in using upcycled materials to create all sorts of products.

I used to think that my only options as an artist were to become popular enough that people would commission me or just give me money via patreon, but that's not the case. You can sell at craft fairs and conventions, you can provide a specific service, you can create assets and asset packs people can pay for, and you can create all sorts of physical or digital products to sell... and that's just the tip of the iceberg!

If you are constantly turning art into a numbers game to see how you can make enough money by posting the right™ stuff online at the right time, you're only going to make yourself miserable.

The best way to make a living off your art has NOTHING to do with popularity, getting lots of engagement online, or besting an algorithm, it's all networking. It's all about finding the right people who want what you make. If all you focus on is your follower count and post engagement, you're just going to end up hating art.

"Having fun doesn't pay the bills", who told you that? Why did you believe them?

I'm seeing people reblog the original post without the addition and I think yall should reblog this version instead

Also I made a mistake, the artist I work for has been working for over 50 years, not 40.

Everytime I see posts like this I get filled with such profound sadness

Cause you know who has the same brainrot as you? The same unhinged feelings as you after you've read the fic? The person who always wants to scream about the fic with you?

THE PERSON WHO WROTE IT

I never used to leave comments but since I got into the habit of commenting on everything i enjoy it's been incredible. Especially when the author gets back to me about it and we get to have a discussion of what other ideas they had. One writer replied to my comment with a 5 paragraph essay detailing the Floorplan of the building the characters lived in and it was incredible

Anyways this is all to say that if you find a fic that just makes you want to scream from the rooftops, leave a comment saying that to the author and maybe they will join you and you can scream incoherently together

It's also important to know, this feeling of isolation is what the author feels but ten fold. It's the exact reason writers are begging for comments. It's to talk about the story with someone. That story that's taken up your life for a few hours, or perhaps days, has taken up the author's life for weeks, months, and - very often - years. There's a very good chance these authors are dying to talk to you.

genuinely partially agree with the people on twitter

nobody NEEDS a pillow collection that says "live laugh love", especially when they are never used as actual pillows

it's like buying an off-road car as a farmer and keeping it in the garage to only be looked at and admired

having things with form over function in mind is a luxury problem that wouldn't be a thing in a not classist environment in which you constantly compete with everyone else about who has the perfect life

i also think that if you still disagree, you probably have lost control over your own life choices, or may have never had any

Hey man how's it going

Having so many decorative pillows that your couch can no longer couch is a problem.

Having a couple of decorative pillows that spark joy is totally neutral as a choice. It's not bougie or whatever--do you have any idea how cheaply you can get decorative pillows at yard sales and thrift stores? I have one decorative pillow I bought new. It's orange and has a T. Rex going RAWR on it. It came from Target. My happy dinosaur pillow does not make me the ruling class.

Maybe breathe and let people be happy?

Emet made the sole decorative pillow for the shop couch out of her dead dog's favorite t-shirt.

So. You know. Bougie or whatever, lol.

Mila always has a spot on the couch now.

No, no, that's exactly it.

Catch me calling myself a 1%er and putting down a deposit on a house because my sister made me this decorative pillow for my 30th birthday.

Just ignore the fact I can't afford to get my boiler repaired and could only afford half the groceries I'd usually get for the week

The sad thing is how many people on Tumblr (and elsewhere) really think that way bc we've been taught to think that way.

That Calvinistic eternal competition lol

what makes this even funnier to me is that it's a Skyline GT-R, a car that was only made for the Japanese market, meaning it's right hand drive. which means that if you wanted to go through a drive thru that's made for left hand drive cars, you would have to go in reverse in order to be on the side with the drive thru window
