Which is better to post on between ao3 and tumbles?

As a writer? AO3. I mean, AO3 is a writing archive and tumblr is more of a social media and i feel like that difference shows at times in how fic is responded to.

To achieve any kind of 'success' on tumblr you are fighting a battle on multiple fronts:

  • The shitty tagging system. If you mis-tag a piece of writing then you might as well be screaming into the void because no one will see it and that's even IF it even shows up because the tag system here is woeful and broken.
  • Formatting. At the end of the day, folk who have time to create banners and gifs etc for their works will often be in a position to gain more attention than people who just post the writing itself. Again, how a post looks doesn't affect quality but so many good pieces are skipped over because they don't look 'good' enough.
  • Tumblr is a social media, as said, so if you already have a following who have shown themselves to be happy to reblog stuff then posting exposes your work more. Again, absolutely no reflection on work quality but it does give a better chance for work to be shared.
  • Posting a fic at the wrong time of day can result in limited interest as it'll be buried by other posts quickly. And when something is buried it's lost in the void unless someone is determined to rifle through a tag. A good example of this is a work I posted recently which was very similar to others which received a ton of notes but because this was posted at a SLIGHTLY different time, has almost 60% less interest.
  • Speaking of pairings, tumblr favours reader inserts over character/character works and it values smut over more introspective pieces. Which means you could be writing the most incredible, in-character and thoughtful pieces but because the character isn't reacting to a reader character, it often doesn't float as well.

To conclude, tumblr can be a very unfriendly place to post writing if you aren't willing or capable of playing the game and abiding by some of these rules. That said, I DO prefer the social aspect of posting here but I will trust AO3 more in terms of easily finding quality fic I think I will enjoy.
