What are some tricks for getting executive dysfunction to bugger off long enough to do the thing?

Avatar

     Here are some ideas I’ve either found work for me or I’ve been told work for other people. Hopefully you’ll find some of them effective or, if not, maybe they’ll inspire you to come up with some brand new strategies of your own.

  1. Declare your intent aloud. Announce to yourself (and other people, if they’re around) that you’re going to do the thing you need to do. Eg: “I will clean the sink.” “I am going to have a shower.”
  2. Talk yourself through the task. Narrating the steps of my current task as I do them helps me to concentrate and follow through. Eg: “I am gathering the empty cups from the table and putting them in the sink.” Sometimes I can then even start narrating things I am not doing and I’ll automatically follow through because it’s become a habit in the moment. If a task involves reading, try reading it aloud.
  3. Steal the energy from elsewhere. Engage with something that makes you feel good first, then ride that high to do the thing that doesn’t. If the task involves doing something physical, put on some energetic music that makes you want to dance and then channel that dance energy into task energy.
  4. Hype yourself up. Channel your inner feel-good sports movie coach and start telling yourself how awesome you are, how you’re gonna kick this task’s butt and this task doesn’t stand a chance. Repeat random over-the-top motivational phrases until the motivation has no choice but to appear, like summoning an eldritch being by annoying them until they acknowledge you.
  5. Break the task into steps. Very often I’ll have trouble tackling tasks, even simple ones, just because I don’t know where to start and the whole thing feels bigger than it is. In this case I find it helps to determine the steps that a task involves and do them one at a time, treating each one as its own job. Eg: Instead of “I will write an essay” try “I will write an introductory paragraph” or even just “I will write an introductory sentence”.
  6. Write the steps down. Goodness knows I can’t follow verbal instructions for the life of me unless they’re given one step at a time. Rather than trying to keep the steps straight in your head, write them down and keep referring back to that list when you get sidetracked, lost, or stuck.
  7. Do the task out of order. If the task allows it, try doing whatever part is most appealing first to ease yourself into the workflow.
  8. Make the workload smaller. If jobs like doing dishes or laundry seem like too much work, consider if you can get rid of some of the clothes or dishes to cut down on how much work there is in the first place. If you’ve committed to too large a project, see if you can simplify it or distribute the work involved among a group.
  9. Narrow your focus. Rather than tackling an entire task at once, try breaking it into easier-to-manage chunks. If you need to do laundry or dishes, specify that you’re only going to wash shirts or plates. If reading an entire book is intimidating, assign yourself a certain number of pages at a time. If reading an entire page of text is intimidating, try covering the page with a loose piece of paper and slowly revealing lines as you read.
  10. Do it in five minute increments. Set a timer for five minutes and do the task for the duration. If you feel like you could do a little more, keep at it. If you’re still struggling, give yourself a break (you can also time your break if you find that helps) and try again later.
  11. Use a buddy. See if there’s someone who’s willing to have a call going or who will come sit by you or even just check in every once in a while to keep you accountable. ADHDers are notorious for lacking internal motivation, so employing someone else to externalize it can make a big difference.
  12. Be kind to yourself. Sometimes, no matter what you do, your brain just doesn’t want to cooperate. If you feel yourself getting frustrated, remember that it’s not your fault. Take a step back, have a snack or drink of water, give yourself some time to decompress, and don’t be afraid to ask for help. Taking care of yourself will help you to actually be in good enough condition to do the job.

     I’ve also talked more in-depth about how I personally tackle doing tasks despite executive dysfunction here, and I have an ADHD Writing Advice post here that has some tips that may be applicable to tasks other than writing.

     To others who struggle with executive dysfunction, what are some strategies you’ve discovered work for you?

reminder that if you’re questioning your gender, “what do I want?” and “what will make me happy?” tend to be much more useful questions than “what am I, really?”

Supporting Trans♡

Okay so I want to shine a light on those who are trans because you all deserve love, respect, and support just like everyone else does. I have two trans friends and I fully protect and support the trans community and I always will. I believe that trans people should be seen as a positive addition to society. Trans people are not a burden. Trans people are real and beautiful. Trans girls are real and beautiful. Trans boys are real and beautiful. Trans rights are human rights. Trans is valid. You deserve to be who you are without so much judgment from others. You deserve to go to the bathroom in peace without being looked at and questioned about it. You deserve to be happy and to love who you want to. You are worthy, loved, capable, and amazing. The time is always right to do what is right. It's never too late to be yourself. Trans people are strong because being trans takes guts because they have to do things no one else understands to become who they really are and that's brave. Trans people who are only top dysphoric and not bottom dysphoria are valid. Trans people who are only bottom dysphoric and not top dysphoria are valid. Trans people who have minor dysphoria are still valid. Trans people who have fluctuating dysphoria are valid. Trans people with major dysphoria are valid. Trans people who are stealth are valid. Trans people who came out are valid. Trans people who haven't came out yet are valid. Straight trans people are valid. Bisexual trans people are valid. Pansexual trans people are valid. Gay trans people are valid. Ace and aro trans people are valid. Trans people who are rendered asexual due to their dysphoria are valid. Trans people who aren't comfortable with dating a fellow trans person are valid. Trans people who are only comfortable dating fellow trans people are valid. Trans people who can't dress the way they want due to their transphobic parents are valid. Your gender is real. Your identity is valid. You are worthy of love and respect. Never apologize for being you. Please never forget that. I'm so proud of every single trans person who continues to keep on fighting, staying strong, and being themselves. Be yourself, remember there are always people who support you and I will always fully protect and support you. ♡

I was talking to one of my friends about Sam Smith and when she said “he”, I politely corrected her and she was like “ohhhh, so are they the person that sings ‘stay with me’?” and

It’s literally that simple I don’t know why people can’t just used someone’s preferred pronouns

I have really bad hip disphoria . This is no joke so, I had a wet suit on because it's may and it's freezing in my pool (no heater) I wrapped a towel around my body so no one can see my hips, I have VERY wide hips. idk what to do. how the heck do I cope with hip dysphoria ?

Avatar

Oof, we’re really behind/focused on other non-online parts of our lives. Unfortunately there’s not much to do for this when you’re in the pool. But outside of that you could wear layers, avoid horizontal stripes and tight fitting clothes.

Sorry I’m not a curvy person and I dont have much to help, any one got anything?

say we’re talking binary code. 0 is boy and 1 is girl. There’s no such thing as 2, 3, 4 and so on in binary code. Nonbinary isn’t 0.5. Nonbinary has nothing to do with strictly 0 or 1 by itself. Nonbinary can be something besides a number.

 It’s not androgyny to the extent that being a woman isn’t about ‘being feminine’ and being a man isn’t about ‘being masculine’. Being nonbinary in public is about not making assumptions based on ‘gendered traits’.

Being nonbinary is the same as being trans, but being trans isnt necessarily being nonbinary. Even so both flags and communities are unique and beautiful.

 Nonbinary isn’t ‘white afab who cut their hair and had a revelation’, that’s just some nonbinary people’s realities.

There is no nonbinary look. There is no nonbinary spokesperson. There’s no ‘nonbinary’ goals, just transition goals.

Nonbinary isn’t a contradiction. nonbinary isn’t a third gender option on your id. Nonbinary is the remomval of gender markers

How to tuck safely

Warning: mentions of male genitalia

Safety first.{ Tucking should be approached with careful understanding and respect for your body and its well-being. Extreme tucking and incorrect tucking can cause severe health problems both long and short term. Always excerise caution! Use only safe methods!}

Know you don't need to tuck and don't feel the need to tuck. { Get some strong underwear in a boyshorts style and push back slightly and gently. You don't need to tuck fully every day or ever! You don't need to tape yourself or wear a gaff unless you want to and you think/know that it will alleviate dysphoria or you need it to pass Tucking does not make you more valid! Tucking has many medical risks especially if you tuck for too long or tuck incorrectly. It's your choice and don't let anyone dictate what you do!}

How to tuck your testes. {The most well-known method is finding the inguinal canal (where your testicles may naturally go when you are cold) and popping your testicles into them. You can use two or three fingers to guide them up to their canals. Don’t rush this! If there’s any pain or discomfort, stop and try again after a short break. However many amab people may not be able to do this as their inguinal canals are tiny and if you do this you could be permanently harmed. So instead you can just slide your testicles between your legs towards your buttocks, either between or just below your buttocks.}

How to tuck your penis.{You can tuck with or without tape (medical, sports or trans). Always cover the urethra with toilet paper or gause before tucking. This is to prevent germs from spreading to the anus and causing an infection.

If you’re going to use tape, make sure to always use medical/sports/trans tape instead of duct tape or any other kind of tape. Once you have tucked the testes you need to tuck the rest of the penis. Pull the penis from behind to put it in between your buttocks. Once everything id in position, you must squeeze them between your legs to prevent them from slipping. If you're using tape, apply tape 2-3 times from the pelvic floor to the shaft of the penis and then after pass the tape to your buttocks and either stick on either hip or up your lower spine. Make sure to hold everything in place while you do this. This however will make it harder to go to the toilet. So if you aren't tucking with tape, stand in your gaff or two pairs of underwear so you can pull them up without the hassle of stepping into them!}

How to untuck.{ Always be as gentle as possible while tucking and untucking. If you're using tape and it won't come off easily or without pain, apply a wet flannel, or soak the area in warm water to break the adhesive in a shower or bath. You can also use medical adhesive remover. If you didn’t use tape, use your hands to gently guide your penis and scrotum back to normal!}

Know the dangers of methods. {The inguinal canal method can be dangerous and increases the chances of a inguinal hernia where your lower intestine gets tangled up with the scrotum and you could die. Always be safe and know what you're doing!}

Erections and tucking. { If you become aroused while tucking, you won't untuck unless there’s an issue with the tape, gaff, or underwear, or you weren’t securely tucked before the erection started. You may also experience some discomfort and slight pain so try to untuck as soon as possible!}

Do not tuck with duck tape.{ Duck tape should never be used in place of Trans tape or sports tape or something like it as it is non-breathable, not entirely skin friendly and can tear skin. It can also cause major health problems again both short term and long term.If you are currently tucking with it ,take a hot shower and slowly peel the bandages off your skin. You can try using lotion as well. If the tape does not remove easily then go to the emergency room.}

Do not sleep while tucking. { Sleeping while tucking would not only be uncomfortable but you also run the risk of putting pressure on areas you’re not supposed to without realising it, and there’s a risk of 'UTIs, yeast infections and other skin conditions' because of the sweat and bacteria. Try to wear something baggy that covers the area instead. Your health must come first!}

Gaffs. { A gaff is a pair of compression underwear. A gaff is made to be worn either with or without tucking and works to help trans folkd achieve a flatter look. They can be bought or made. A bought one will be of a higher quality, value and will flatten better!} Хо

Making a gaff. { Cut the waistband off of tights (you can do whatever you like with the rest of the tights) and also cut an elastic part of a sock off (again you can do whatever you like with the rest of the sock). Thread the waistband through the sock. Now you can step into the waistband on either side of the sock and pull it up like underwear!}

Sizing a gaff. { If you are buying a gaff. Getting the right size of gaff is similar to getting the correct size of underwear. Measure around your waist (just above the hips). Look at a size chart on the site you are using to buy a gaff and see which size your measurements fall under. Do not buy a gaff too small! Gaffs should be secure and tight but not constricting or suffocating! You can buy gaffs from places like origami customs, gendergear and hiddencandyboutique!}

Clean your gaff.{ Wash the gaff in cold water either machine or by hand. Don't bleach it! Don't tumble dry it! Hang it up to dry to keep it in its best shape!}

If you're using tape, shave your pubic hair. { Shaving your pubic hair will allow for easy removal of the tape and no impromptu waxing! It doesn't have to completely gone but just enough that the tape has some skin to stick to. No one wants a painful tape removal! Do not tape freshly shaved skin!}

Wash your genitals and tucking equipment regularly. {While you tuck you sweat and bacteria may build up, you should wash your genitals and tucking equipment as often as you can!}

Notice when your body says no. {Tucking for too long and incorrect tucking are not good for you and you need to recognise when you should stop tucking. When you feel any pain stop tucking as soon as possible. Tucking should not compromise your health! Please listen to your body and its pain and tuck safely!}

Take more breaks than you think you'll need.{Though you can tuck for 4-8 hours, try and take breaks for a few minutes every hour or so. As you have to untuck to use the bathroom, wait an extra minute or so before you return everything!}

Wear shorts under skirts. { As stated earlier you don't need to tuck instead you could just wear multiple pairs of underwear or shorts under skirts. These should cover any sign of a bulge.}

Remember. { You do not need to tuck to be valid. You do not need to tape yourself everyday or wear a gaff everyday. You are valid and you are not 'faking it' if you don't or can't tuck. It is no one else's business but your own if you choose to tuck or not. You can pass without tucking. Please take care of yourself!}
