The Entombment of West by Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio

The second in the series of pieces where I insert Kanye into classic art. Less white European Jesus in this than in the original, as you can tell. Caravaggio was like a Kanye West mixed with a Chief Keef in his time. He knew he had huge talent, and wasn’t afraid to use it to shock and express, or to simply use it to serve a specific individual or need. He would sometimes walk around with his posse and just ball out of control. The dude was rad as hell. More coming up. Hit me up for a print or anything. I ordered a shirt o my last one, and it looks amazing. SHIRTS: https://society6.com/product/the-entombment-of-ye-37z_all-over-print-shirt#57=422

The Immaculate Kanception by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo. This is one of the first in a series where I add Kanye West, to various pieces of classical art. I’ve got a bunch of these. Started first creating these in a college class as a lark, on some quiet little protest on the inanity of what I was being sold as an education because my major program was a joke BS...but then found that I really liked making these more than anything else Iw as doing in class. So I started taking them seriously, spending more time on them, and having a great time making them. And I figured you might like them too! MAYBE ENOUGH TO GET A SHIRT OR PRINT OR RUG (?) OR SHOWER CURTAIN (???). SHIRTS ETC: https://society6.com/traviscompton

More coming up.

Because sometimes you have what you think is a neat idea for a modern reboot of a classic comic and know awesome, simpatico folks like the fantastic artist Sean Miller (Kid Sherlock) and his buddy Travis Compton who will listen patiently to your ravings and collaborate to make awesome proof-of-concept covers like this.

So excited to have worked on this with bitchinville and travis-compton! Hope to share more soon. Stay tuned!

Here's a 7 page (plus some extras from later in the book) preview of my comic Redshift. Art and story by me and published under Anchor Comics, it's available digitally for just 99 cents, or I can ship you a physical copy for the cover price. If you want it signed or have any special requests with your order, I'd be happy to accommodate--just shoot me an email at travismcompton@gmail.com! It's available at the Anchor Comics online store along with Sean Miller's comic, "The Original."

The project here was to design a dune buggy. I wanted to switch things up a bit, however, so I designed a vehicle that would forcibly cut through or rip across dunes, rather than a vehicle that uses suspension to conform to them. This meant making something with huge amounts of torque--alien amounts, even!

But, how could I design with this torque in mind?

To do exactly that, I decided to mix a much more rugged aesthetic (this thing has gotta rip through harsh sand all day) with high-tech, alien propulsion engine designs. The engine is hooked directly up to the wheels, giving the thing a feeling of significant downward weight and push from the back. I put Keanu Reeves in there too. For good times!

Mixing the scrappy aesthetic with a sci-fi aesthetic was a lot of fun, and something I'd like to do more of going forward.

3D model of a creature concept I had drawn a while back. You can see the concept above, along with the renders.

The method of going from 2D, to trying to realize and sculpt the idea in 3D is an incredible tool for developing skills in both mediums. Trying to visualize in the 3D space is a unique challenge that directly translates into the 2D visualization process. It's a much more conscious version of the brain stretch required when trying to quickly sketch!

This one took hours to render a turntable of--displacement maps will do that, and those rule the day on this project. Sculpting the lava in a way that worked well with the molten rock textures I painted on top of the sheet was a challenge. Finding an effective workflow for that, as well as various other parts of the model was challenging.
