Of your OTPs, who most efficiently moves house together? Who needs an adultier adult? 📦

Beth and Daryl are experts at minimalist living and packing up quickly. They have everything done after their morning coffee and still have time to go deer hunting.

Buffy and Spike spent too much time arguing over decor options — “I am not having a sarcophagus in the bedroom!” — to really get anything done.

Rose looks at the Doctor, the Doctor looks at Rose, and they burst out laughing. “Do they realize our home moves itself?”

This Blog Is Unrepentantly Pro- AO3!

This blogger remembers when we didn’t have AO3.

This blogger remembers when we had to put disclaimers at the head of our fics and pray that someone didn’t take it into their heads to sue us for what we created.

This blogger remembers brilliant artists and writers getting decades of work obliterated on LJ because someone who wanted to tell people what they were allowed to create went running to someone who wanted a profit, and told them the artists and writers had been naughty.

This blogger remembers just how hard the creators of AO3 worked to build the thing we all seem to take for granted now.

This blogger watched friends dive into the creation process so heartily and determinedly that they all but disappeared from the writing/gaming/artistic side of their fandom for YEARS while they worked to make the archive happen.

This blogger remembers the sense of giddy wonder that there would possibly be LAWYERS involved, willing to defend our right to create these works, and not leave us hanging at the mercy of corporate legal teams.

This blogger is aware that she reads between twenty to fifty books’ worth of material every year on AO3, and is never REQUIRED to pay a penny for the privilege of getting access.

This blogger is aware that she will not ever see advertisements on AO3, and that her personal data and reading preferences won’t be sold to advertisers in order to raise the money that AO3 needs to pay for the services they provide.

This blogger is aware that AO3 is, and has always been, a labor of love; by fans, for fans, and not for profiting off fans – and this is what makes it unique in the whole of the media universe.

This blogger has NEVER taken AO3 for granted, and has ALWAYS been damned glad to have access to it.  Even in years when this blogger didn’t have the means to support it financially.

Same.

AO3 is an archive of the content fandom has produced, not a curated collection. The point wasn’t to be a home for GOOD fanworks it was to be a home for ALL fanworks, to provide free access to them and preserve our history as a subculture.

This blog will never apologize for supporting that.

I had a dream about a Star Trek series with a ferengi captain and he was super endearing but it was like…the worst ship in the fleet and it was full of the misfits of starfleet But I loved this captain I loved him who is he
this is an amazing idea

It’s Nog.

Despite its face as a purported utopia, Starfleet’s got some unfortunate cultural hangups to work through when it comes to certain species, of course. Being the only Ferengi in Starfleet, Nog has to deal with all kinds of racist bullshit from his peers, his superiors, those he eventually outranks.

He makes captain real quick, through a combination of a few open-minded mentors, bull-headed determination, and the good old-fashioned lobes for the business of dealing with people. And he does it despite the bullying, the unfounded rumors and stumbling blocks thrown in his way. He campaigns to have his own ship and gets it simply because the bigots at the top can’t find a legitimate reason to deny it.

But they still try to set him up for failure. They crew his below-substandard ship with the dregs, the misfits, the near-dropouts of the Academy. But instead of getting frustrated, Nog sees opportunity. He knows what his ragtag crew feels like- the unwanted, expected to crash and burn, pushed out to be forgotten.

They know why they’ve been dumped together, pushed aside in the hopes that they’ll just go away. After an admittedly rocky start, Nog sits the crew down in the mess hall and tells these square pegs to start carving corners into the round holes Starfleet has shoved them into. You can’t fit the job? Make the job fit you. We could just give up and be bitter that we’ve all clearly been put here because Admirals Whats-Their-Faces are just waiting for us to bumble into a black hole, or we could surprise them. Prove them wrong.

For himself, Nog adapts the Rules of Acquisition to be compatible with Starfleet culture. His uncle Quark would need a fainting couch if he ever heard, but Nog is thinking profit in a much longer game. He wants to be just the first of many Ferengi to join Starfleet, so he must be a consummate cultural pioneer. More Ferengi in Starfleet might mean eventually Ferenginar joins the Federation. It’s a… very long shot, admittedly, and he might be long dead of old age by the time it happened, but Nog has faith in his people. The females’ liberation movement, going full steam ahead back on his home planet, proves his people can change for the better; it’s a start. Wider acceptance in the galactic community = profit for Ferenginar’s people, and Nog’s idea of profit has expanded somewhat beyond just latinum. (Quark would also need that fainting couch if he ever knew the radical altruistic turn his nephew’s philosophy had taken.)

Ishka listens to her grandson’s weekly transmissions home and could just burst with pride with each one.

He susses out the talents and skills each of his crewmembers has to offer. Puts them to work in ways that dance just around the edges of regulation, finding loopholes in only the way a good Ferengi can. The jerks in charge of handing out assignments keep giving him missions either designed to be a guaranteed fail or are so terrible and frustrating that they should just want to quit, but he turns these fetch quests and garbage details on their side to not only succeed, but return with valuable data or objects of interest. Nothing galaxy-shaking, but more than enough that it makes Nog’s detractors fume at the thought of this upstart shrimp of a Ferengi and all those should-be washouts doing well. Pretty soon Nog’s supporters, the handful of teachers back at the Academy, are all smirking quietly at each other in the faculty conference rooms.

Then Nog and his crew land the big one. One of their little throwaway missions turns over just the right space rock and there’s some universe-ending anomaly staring back at them. Their calls for assistance are treated casually at best- ‘Ugh, it’s the Ferengi and the USS Jury Rig (not their little tub’s real name, but the insult backfired, and Nog’s pretty sure Jenkins is the one who handpainted the nickname on the nacelles during a spacewalk; Nog pretends not to have noticed.), what, did they get caught behind a flock of asteroids?’

Nog and his crew realize help is dragging their warp-speed asses and they’re on their own. Defiantly, they roll their eyes, sigh (gee, shouldn’t we all own condos here at the back of everyone’s priority queue by now?) and get to work. By the time the first ship arrives to help, its just in time to watch the crew of the Jury Rig banish the terrible thing in the sky.

In the fallout, Starfleet command is made aware of all the things Nog and his crew has actually accomplished, along with all the shit they’ve put up with from superiors who set them up to fail. Nog is offered a newer, better ship. Some of the crew are offered promotions, positions on more prestigious ships. To a one, they decline. They’re staying with Captain Nog.

…they take the new ship, though.

You know, I actually agree that giving Spike a soul in S7 means that Buffy is unable to get closure for what he did to her while unsouled, because souled Spike, by Buffyverse rules, is a whole different guy, and she’s obligated to treat him as such. (The exact same reasoning applies to Angel in S3.) I’d also agree that far, far too little attention is paid in S7 to how Buffy feels about Spike and what he did. Nor do I think that S7 Spuffy was a particularly healthy relationship. HOWEVER. I wanna hit a few points.

When he decides to get a soul, Spike’s not capable of making totally altruistic decisions, so dinging him for not doing so is kind of pointless. He can, however, make decisions which will benefit people he cares about more than they benefit him. Example: Getting tortured by Glory, sticking around to help the Scoobies after Buffy dies, etc. Whether you want to call it love or not, he does care about Buffy in some capacity. Spike getting a soul absolutely benefits Buffy (and any potential future Happy Meals) far more than it benefits Spike; it subjects him to an eternity of moral torment, and it condemns him to hell rather than mere non-existence upon staking. Spike may or may not know anything about point two, but he’s definitely aware of point one. He may not comprehend exactly how bad said moral torment will be, but he knows it’s not going to be all hugs and puppies. Indeed, depending upon your interpretation of what the soul is in the Buffyverse, he could be said to be committing suicide. It’s as close to an unselfish decision as a soulless demon can come.

What little Spike says regarding his motives in the last few episodes of S6 is that he’s doing it to prove he can change, and so Buffy will get what she deserves. When Spike and Buffy meet in S7, Spike is mentally ill. Whether it’s because of the soul, or the First Evil, or a combination of the two, he’s not in his right mind. Even so, he does not initially tell Buffy that he has a soul, much less that he got it for her. In fact, he actively tries to hide it when Anya tries to spill the beans. It’s only after he has a complete breakdown and Buffy presses him for the truth that he admits to her what’s going on. I am uncertain what the antis think he should have done at that point – lie to her?

Well, no – Spike should never have come back to Sunnydale at all. Not coming back would have been a valid choice, IMO, but I can’t help feeling that if the story had gone that way, the antis would just be saying now, “Yeah, and even after he got a soul he just ran away like a selfish coward, never apologizing to Buffy, leaving her to fight the First alone!” There is no choice Spike could make here which would satisfy a determined anti. Spike does offer to leave in First Date, and Buffy tells him she wants him to stay. While antis decry Buffy’s lack of agency in Spike getting a soul, they’re usually perfectly willing to ignore her agency here, dismissing her expressed desire as invalid because it’s directed at a character they dislike. And of course, in the end, Spike does move on, in the most final way possible – he dies, and explicitly tells Buffy to go on without him.

In Beneath You, what Spike says is “For her. To be hers. To be the kind of man who would nev— (looks away) to be a kind of man.” There are two motives here. Spike’s desire “to be a kind of man” harks all the way back to The Gift and telling Buffy that her treating him like a man is more important to him than her loving him. He is unable to quell the hope that Buffy will love him someday, even as he realizes that hope is a vain one. Selfish? To some extent, but hardly any more selfish than, say, Angel admitting to Buffy that he still wants to “take comfort” in her, even knowing it will cost him his soul. Everyone has selfish desires. So does Buffy, come to that. Neither Spike nor Angel act on those selfish desires, and that is the important thing.

Spike’s talk with Clem before leaving Sunnydale betrays an existential anguish with the position he’s in – unable to be either a man or a monster. Buffy or no Buffy, he can no longer endure being stuck halfway between the two; he must go one way or the other. It continually amazes me that some people are so invested in hating a character or a ship that they have to portray his decision to head in the direction of “man” as the wrong one. Love can be incredibly fucked up. Romeo and Juliet, Lancelot and Guenevere, Tristan and Isolde, all the so-called great romances – are they healthy? HELL NO. Are they great stories? HELL YES. Same for Spuffy. And Bangel. And Fuffy. And Sprusilla. And Twillow. And all the other screwed up, painful, romantic relationships in this series.

Fundraising

Looking to set up a fundraiser for my sister and her husband – he has a serious medical thing going on right now and while our medical system covers his costs of care, he has to go to a hospital out of town and my sister is going to have some expenses staying with them.

Does anyone have a recommendation? I’m particularly interested in sites that don’t charge a fee or take a portion of the money raised. If you don’t know feel free to reblog to reach a wider audience.

Thanks in advance.

A bunch of you have already gotten in touch with me, but if you’re not one of them, there’s still a couple days to use that coupon! And the coupon code applies to any of the other books I have available, too.

(Last time I’ll reblog this, folks, sorry I’ve been plastering it all over your dash). Coupon code expires at midnight tonight EST! And yes, it does apply to international shipping - so far people have been saving a TON on shipping, so again, this is a good time to place an order if you’ve been wanting to. 👍

“Depression is hard to understand, because it is not a consistent state. Depression is rather like a virus, but like a virus, it has its manageable days and its acute, life-threatening flare-ups. You can be in a depression and still laugh at a friend’s joke or have a good night at dinner or manage low-level functioning. You grocery shop and stop to pet a puppy on the corner, talk to friends in a café, maybe write something you don’t hate. When this happens, you might examine your day for clues like reading tea leaves in a cup: Was it the egg for breakfast that made the difference? The three-mile run? You think, well, maybe this thing has moved on now. And you make no sudden moves for fear of attracting its abusive attention again. But other times… Other times, it’s as if a hole is opening inside you, wider and wider, pressing against your lungs, pushing your internal organs into unnatural places, and you cannot draw a true breath. You are breaking inside, slowly, and everything that keeps you tethered to your life, all of your normal responses, is being sucked through the hole like an airlock emptying into space. These are the times Holly Golightly called the Mean Reds. I call it White Knuckling it.”

“But the stigma of depression is that it comes with the sense that you shouldn’t have it to begin with. That it is self-indulgence or emotional incompetence rather than actual illness.”

i think the worst thing to come out of this site are the ‘NAZIS ARE TERRIBLE. they WILL KILL ALL JEWS in COLD BLOOD, LET THEIR FAMILIES DIE IN FRONT OF THEM, and start the HOLOCAUST 2.0!! also reblog to make a jew feel safe.’ formatted type posts

ways to make a jew feel safe and comfortable:

-let them celebrate their holidays openly around you and encourage them to express themselves religiously. if they invite you over for a holiday, go!! they’re making an effort to let you learn more about them.

-consider any different diets they might be on (ex. kosher or even if it’s passover) when you have them over at your house. a little goes a long way with this one

-if christmas is around חנוכה that year, feel free to send them a חנוכה card!! it’s not really as big of a holiday for us but we do appreciate the effort put into making us feel included :)

-educate any of your friends that might make antisemitic jokes. even ‘grammar nazi’ jokes. standing up for jewish people goes further than when theyre just around. antisemitism isnt something that only exists when a jew is in the room.

-understand that, if they practice judaism, their beliefs arent like yours, and that that’s ok! a lot of people forget that not everyone is either a christian or an atheist whenever the topic of religion comes up. (but also remember not every jew practices or believes in judaism!!)

-if they tell you to warn them before you talk about nazis, do it. It’s really easy just to give someone a heads up before you talk about people who want them dead, especially if they’re openly jewish or a holocaust survivor descendent.

ways NOT to make a jew feel safe and comfortable:

“NAZIS are EVIL. they will KILL ALL THE JEWS. that’s just BAD. they will MURDER EVERY SINGLE JEWISH FAMILY. NO JEW IS SAFE. anyway reblog to make a jewish person feel safe and loved 🤗”

also if you can goyim reblog. and if you’re jewish and want to add on feel free!

hey by ‘if you are a goy reblog if you can’ i meant ‘i highly encourage you to reblog this because i have seen too many posts that make me and other jewish people very uncomfortable and they are, to be honest, entirely surface level and exhausting to see over and over again. not only that, but they are also annoying to us because they dont make us feel safe at all, and reblogging posts about how bad nazis are isnt actual activism or showing real, substantial support for jews. if youre serious about being there for your jewish siblings actually take part in their lives. make sure they’re comfortable. make sure you make casual antisemitists uncomfortable. dont just reblog posts about hating nazis, your posts dont do shit. supporting your jewish friends by even doing something as simple as what i listed above does have an affect of us. your posts about you hating nazis mean absolutely nothing unless you care for and acknowledge Actual Jewish People’s problems and challenges. otherwise, they’re surface level bullshit and do not contribute whatsoever to improve our safety.’ :) :) :)

Sometimes things fall apart all at once. And sometimes they fall apart in stages, and take everyone down with them.

Out of the corner of her eye she sees Glenn getting to his feet, feels a prickle of disquiet, and then they’re all out of her view and she’s fixing her eyes on the low, mossy roof of her destination, mere yards ahead.

One step. Then another. She’ll go to him, take him aside, and find the words. Find a way.

Surely she can do it. Surely she’s been through much worse.

Not worse than what you’re going through every day.

But she’s just closing Nellie’s stall and turning to put away the saddle when she sees him standing there, half in sun and half in shadow, and by the look on his face she knows instantly that she’s too late.

The SPN fandom is trash. Stop ignoring it.

You’ve probably seen some fanarts from @eliciadonze . She’s been getting a lot of hate from this fandom for years. Slurs, death and rape threats, victim blaming, everything you can imagine.

And this every single day, no matter what she did. Because it’s not really about who she is or what she draws. She never did anything wrong. It’s about people being cruel and/or jealous, and especially about people and this fandom in general feeling entitled. Because after all, everyone else does it. After all, she should just shut up about it. After all, you’re just telling her what to do, you know better, it’s not hate but advice.

The entitlement in the so called “spn family” is huge. And the hypocrisy : reblogging Jared’s mental health related stuff, buying “you’re not alone” shirts but not giving a fuck about an artist getting PTSD because of us.

This fandom is attempting to kill her. This is happening right now.

It’s tempting to just leave this fandom which, as Elicia said, cares more about 3 fictional guys than a real person. But it’s the easy way out. Less guilt, but no help.

So, if you’ve ever appreciated Elicia’s art, stand up for her. Spread the word that anyone who has an issue with her isn’t welcome on your blog. That you don’t want them to share what you create or reblog. Write it in brakets underneath your fanarts, your gifs, your fanfics. Message famous blogs, try to make them react. Ask your mutuals about Elicia, block them if they frown. Also go buy her a Ko-Fi if you can’t commission, because the hate is also ruining her career.

And speaking about this is not “ruining the mood of the fandom”. Anyone displeased by seeing people standing up for Elicia shouldn’t be welcome in this fandom anyway.

[Edit : If you agree with this, reblog or write a post of your own. This message needs to be seen].

I don’t know the person mentioned above, but hate is unfortunately very common in Tumblr fandom. And while I wish we could all be civil to each other, I don’t see that happening anytime soon. Since we can’t rely on anyone else doing it for us, each and every one of us needs to take responsibility for our own fandom experience.

You don’t like the content you see? - UNFOLLOW.

You’re receiving anon hate? - TURN OFF ANON ASKS.

Someone uses your posts to link to porn sites? - REPORT THEM.

Someone reposts your art? - REPORT THEM.

Someone keeps bullying you? - BLOCK THEM. REPORT THEM.

I’m the last person to praise Tumblr’s effectiveness as a social media platform, but it is effective enough that we can all avoid serious mental damage.

👍🏻

This advice is so depressing and isolating because I literally do all those things—I do them every day, and I’ve done them for years—and the hate doesn’t stop.

Blocking and reporting hate doesn’t stop it. Turning off anons doesn’t stop it. I’ve tried everything. I’ve moved blogs five times. I’ve deleted my Twitter account twice. I’ve deleted my Deviantart account. I’ve changed names.

What do you do when nothing stops it? How responsible do I have to be?

I get threats if I block people. People retaliate if I report them. Anons get their friends to come after me. I get hate on every other social media platform. It’s been happening for years. And it’s not just some small group with a vendetta—it’s anyone and everyone the minute I speak up or “complain.” It’s y’all when I decide I feel confident and good today and say so. It’s when I post Supernatural art. I get hate if I don’t say thank you to someone’s nice message. I will get hate for this reply. It doesn’t stop.

If I do everything you guys say to do, and I still get hate, does that mean it’s my fault? And you’ll unfollow/abandon/give up like always?

How responsible do I have to be? I do everything I’m supposed to do. I can’t even speak up about half of it because of the backlash. You see a slice.

As a friend of someone who committed suicide from relentless anon hate like this, this advice is bullshit.

I’ve been close, and people have thankfully pulled me back. I’m so sorry 💛

I really hate to say this baby but get off tumblr then. No website is worth your mental health. I’m a firm believer that you can’t get bullied on the internet if you’re not on the internet. Take a breather love yourself then come back when you’re ready

Hi this is victim blaming bullshit.

I can’t afford to leave. I get work here. I pay bills being here. Lots of artists are like me—we make a living here. It’s so easy to be like LOL JUST LEAVE BABY. LOVE YOURSELF.

I love myself just fine. I speak up for myself. I’m strong. Other people are doing this to me. I hear bullshit like yours every day. I’m not the one who needs to leave. Leaving won’t stop hate. It just keeps you from seeing it and dealing with me.

So take your uninformed, total stranger, condecending bullshit and YOU leave.

Avatar

Nothing will change as long as the response is, “stop doing what you love if the bullies won’t leave you alone” “there will always be bullies” “that’s what you get for putting your work/self/whatever on the Internet.”

No.

Fandoms, societies, people – we need to stop letting these people win by excusing the behaviour as just something that happens. Something we should expect. Because that’s bullshit.

I expect to be treated with basic human courtesy and that shouldn’t be an unrealistic goal.

So stop excusing bullying behaviour by expecting it will happen, and start fighting it by accepting nothing less than basic human courtesy for yourself and for others around you.

“The World is Wide” - a Bethyl Ficlet

She must have still been weak from blood loss the first time she decided this was a good idea. Maybe not weak enough to stop her from slipping past the multitude of eyes that never seem to leave her be; to cross the field all by herself in the blazing sun that uses her sweat to decorate her blouse like ink-drops; to choose a day when she knows he’s out hunting and will be gone till nightfall. No; physically, the day she first unzipped Daryl Dixon’s tent and crawled in to read and breathe in the quiet, she was perfectly fine.

Her mental state, however, was clearly something to worry about.
