Contemplating posting my drabbles here. So! Here's the thought of yesterday evening that we shared with @fanaticsnail prompted unintentionally by her pspsps post.

Instead of pspspsps-ing Kid, consider; Kid pspspsps-ing at you. To call you over to sit on his lap, as like a trophy motion while at a party or something. And coming over, sitting there, content to let him appear to be in control. Killer chuckling as he stands beside you two, fully aware of how this goes. As, many drinks and merriment later, the situation finds itself reversed.

Oh, you're still on his lap, sure. But now Kid's head is on your shoulder, actively leaning into your cradling hands, and every few moments he finds himself begging for your attention as you chatter with those he was so desperate to show you off around. Killer is no help at all, happy to help pull your attention away when Kid's getting too much, and all Kid can do is pout, because Killer is the only person present who can get away with actively dragging your attention away without facing the cons and the quences from Kid himself. And all three of you know it.

It's a tug of war; of love, and attention, and showboating. All in good affection, but a battle nonetheless.

Oh, to have the switch up like that 🥹🥹🥹

The little "pspspsps" call from Kid, only to have him melt into your touch as soon as you sit on his lap. Big ol' dopey grin. I can see the dual emotions, the gruff: "Stop talking to my special person" mixing seamlessly with the: "Please, please, please, please, please look at me. Tell me I'm your good boy. I'm still your favourite, right?"

I love this feral gremlin.

how to write creepy stories

  • over describe things
  • under describe things
  • short sentences in rapid succession build tension
  • single sentence paragraphs build dread
  • uncanny valley = things that aren't normal almost getting it right
  • third person limited view
  • limited expressions
  • rot, mold, damage, age, static, flickering, espsecially in places it shouldn't be
  • limited sights for your mc - blindness, darkness, fog
  • being alone - the more people there are, the less scary it is
  • intimate knowledge, but only on one side

your reader's imagination will scare them more than anything you could ever write. you don't have to offer a perfectly concrete explanation for everything at the end. in fact, doing so may detract from your story.

It’s Not a Plot Hole, It’s Foreshadowing

vs.

It’s Not a Plot Hole, It’s Just Something That They Opted Not to Spoon-feed You Because It Would Be Obvious If You Thought About It For 20 Seconds

vs.

It May Be a Plot Hole, But It Still Works In Terms of the Story’s Themes and Character Logic

vs.

Okay, It Is a Plot Hole, What Are You Going to Do, Cry about It?

vs.

All Works of Fiction Represent Constructed Realities and by Demanding a Lack of Plot Holes, You Are Improperly Importing the Rules of Objective Reality into a Subjective Creation that Must Be Judged Primarily on Its Aesthetic Merits

vs.

Dude, Just Come-up With a Headcanon Like A Normal Human Being

There’s also: It’s Not a Plot Hole, It’s Not the Writer’s Fault Your Favourite Headcanons Bear No Resemblance To What’s Actually Happening in the Story.

And special mentions go to: This Is An Ongoing Series, You Can’t Call Stuff Plot Holes Just Because The Story Hasn’t Shown You All The Details Yet

and

Well Yes That Would Be Slightly More Realistic, But it Would Get the Characters the Same Results With the Same Amount of Risk/Effort, So The Only Difference Would Be Making Everything Painfully Boring Which Is Usually A Bad Idea

Or my personal favorite

It’s not a plot hole, you just don’t understand the relevant science and so you feel like it ‘looks’ unrealistic

forever in awe of people who pay attention. people who wait for you while you tie your shoes while the others have walked away. when they continue listening intently while the rest of the group stopped listening. noticing your moments of silence when everyone else hasn’t. “this made me think of you” noticing things you never even noticed about yourself. people who say “text me when you get home safe.” people who make you laugh until you cry. childhood friends who keep in touch. people with genuine intentions. people who are soft when the world has given them every opportunity to turn hard. the “let’s get ice cream” at 3am friend. the turn up the music in the car and sing friend. people whose actions match their words. people who make the world feel less chaotic. kindred spirits. the trustworthy and honest. hard workers. good listeners. clear communicators. people who love you for who you are. people who don’t ask you to be anything other than yourself. people who choose you. people who stay.
