Thomas Hassler - Bikecamping New York
I’m starting a new series here on the site dedicated to bikecamping. The idea behind this project is exploration and adventure, but it is also educational. Many of my friends spend their days-off cycling to and from camping destinations and their stories have inspired me and many other to get out and experience life on two wheels a little differently. This series will document some of the best places to bikecamp that we know of. Some I have been to, while others will be sent in from friends on the road. Think of it as a traveling diary of sorts. Many of these trips are within riding distance from New York City, while others are longer, more multi-modal trips to Maine, Massachusetts, and Vermont. What we have down the line is exciting. It’s something I’ve been wanting to do for a long time. The routes will be posted, along with small write-ups of places to stop, eat, and catch your breath. Gear lists might not always be added, but I’ll be doing separate posts for these. Feel free to leave comments, or drop my an email with questions about the trips, or if you want to suggest/contribute a trip of your own. Until then, here is the first on the list, Harriman State Park in New York.

On June 15th, 2016, join Joe Curz (@pedalinginplace) and I for a night of bikepacking gear talk at Best Made Company’s 36 White Street location in New York City. Joe will be bringing two of his prized fatbikes, including a new, custom Seven Cycles fatbike that he will be taking to Kyrgyzstan this summer.

I was asked to be a part of a shoot for the new Rapha Core line that launched worldwide this week. And when good opportunities come along, I like to jump on them. I worked at the company for two years, and recently left to pursue other goals. But one of the benefits of leaving a company like Rapha is that I can now be a part of it from the outside for the first time in a long time, and enjoy it from a different perspective. It’s made me appreciate the experiences I had a lot more, and has allowed me to spend more time on and off the bike with the people that made my job enjoyable. Last week, despite the forecasted 19F and sun I set out with Alex Cernichiari (RCC Coördinator NYC) and local elite racer Natalie Tapias to shoot the new kit with the inspired photographer Marshall Kappel. Compiled here are some of the images I feel best represents what Rapha Core is all about. As big as the Rapha brand is, it recognized the need to bring something new to the table that catered to all types of riders without breaking the bank. Core was born out of an idea Simon Mottram had when he started Rapha - to make cycling the biggest sport in the world - and with the quality, attention to detail, and price point the core line is at the front line of this pursuit.You can see more of Marshall’s inspiring work at www.marshallkappel.com, and on his instagram @marshallkappelKit is available at www.rapha.cc
