I told this woman I work with to have a happy birthday tomorrow since she's off and she did a double take before asking me how I knew that. when I first started as their boss I made a note of everyone's birthday so I could get them a card/small gift. I told her that and she stared at me for a few moments before saying "I don't like that. no you don't know my birthday. unknow it" then walked away. so this woman I work with has never been born and I've never met her in my life.

Im sorry but unknow it is so fucking funny

when taylor swift said “it just gets so loud sometimes” and maeve wiley said “in ten years time i want a house with big windows. i want the house to be large enough to have a kitchen table with four chairs but not too roomy to ever feel the depth of my aloneness because i’ll probably be alone” and jo march said “and i’m so sick of people saying that love is just all a woman is fit for. i’m so sick of it! but i’m so lonely!” and lorde said “and i’ve never felt more alone, it feels so scary getting old”

school schedules are designed in such a way that kids are deprived of adequate food and sleep. the sleep piece has been written on extensively, but it’s quite plain that requiring young people to wake up at 6am during the developmental phase when they need the most sleep and tend to stay up later is a terrible public health move.

from an eating perspective, it’s just as bad. say a middle or high schooler eats breakfast (if they even eat breakfast) at 7am, then doesn’t eat lunch until 11-12 (and lunch is often inadequate), then has after-school activities, etc. and may not get home until late afternoon, or eat dinner until evening. and kids in school are not generally allowed to snack in class or given time to snack between classes. these gaps between eating times are way too big for adolescents! they need a lot of food–more than adults–to support the growth process, just as they need more sleep.

it’s no wonder many kids start eating reactively in their teens, especially after school or at night–they’re not being adequately fed during the day. even if kids aren’t restricted from eating freely/fully at home, their daily lives regularly involve periods of energy deficiency. add to that the social pressures around body size, and it’s a recipe for disorder at an epidemic level

And it’s not an accident or a simple public health mistake that schools are designed this way—they are the training ground for laborers who’ll spend a lifetime on the bosses’ schedule, stripped (to varying degrees depending on social location) of their bodily autonomy and health

the closest things on earth we have to old eldritch abomination gods are the sun, the ocean and nuclear radiation

the sun:

  • unfathomably ancient, here before all of us and will outlive us all by billions of years
  • its light is so strong that prolonged exposure can burn or blind you even from millions of miles away
  • once worshipped as a god by various religions and cults who made sacrifices to appease it
  • will eventually expand as it burns out and dies and consume us in a desperate attempt to extend its lifespan
  • ‘screams’ as a warning before emitting solar flares

the ocean:

  • an enormous, singular mass that’s constantly heaving and tossing its bulk against the land we build our homes on and gradually ‘eating away’ at it
  • also extremely old and likely to outlast any of our lifespans
  • countless people, ships and even entire landmasses have vanished into its depths, never to be seen or heard from again
  • so vast and dangerous that it’s still mostly uncharted, and less is known about its deepest areas to us than our solar system
  • full of teeth and tentacles and enormous storms and even more unknown terrors none have ever returned from to tell the tale of that can and will consume you without thought or reason
  • also worshipped as a god in the past and often characterized in myths and legends as an vengeful, merciless entity
  • those who sail on it tend to be deeply superstitious and respect its power with a reverence bordering on awe
  • a single strike from the superstorms it brews on a regular basis can devastate vast areas of civilization
  • will eventually rise and consume us

nuclear radiation:

  • emits invisible rays of energy can rip straight through your body with zero resistance, causing long-term and irreparable damage often leading to internal bleeding and the growth of tumors which cause a wasting disease that consumes your healthy cells until you die
  • cannot be completely blocked out, only ‘shielded’ by thick barriers of lead and concrete
  • radioactive waste is so toxic that it’s buried deep underground and/or entombed within a ‘sarcophagus’ of multiple layers of shielding to prevent it from escaping and infecting the ground we grow and raise our food on, the water we drink and the air we breathe
  • areas where it has escaped or been set loose and leaked into its surroundings are evacuated and abandoned for hundreds of miles, and anything that survives within them is shunned as a carrier of the infection and contained in ‘exclusion zones’
  • also capable of outlasting us by many centuries, to the point that people have considered setting up intimidating architecture and writing unsettling cryptic messages to warn future generations not to seek out or disturb it in areas it is concentrated in that sound like biblical accounts of our smiting at the hands of a malevolent god
  • volatile and unpredictable, most accidents that have occurred while handling it are a result of a combination of our lack of knowledge about its abilities and hubris

consider also The Moon:

  • made out of a cataclysmic wound to our home planet
  • remembers all the secrets Earth itself has forgotten
  • half of it is completely hidden from Earth. No human being saw the dark side of the moon till 1959. No one saw it in person till 1968.
  • fourteen days of night
  • way bigger than it should be
  • hosts the (current) largest confirmed crater in the entire solar system
  • one time we went there and danced around on it and it did not eat us
  • which was very nice of it
  • thank you moon
