“Easy, darlin’, easy. Your heart rate’s goin’ faster than a hummin’bird’s wings. You’re alright. You just got hit with a flashbang without the bang part,” he said, as calmly as possible, his own eyesight returning quicker than a normal human’s as his body went into repair mode.
He lightly took her by the elbow and dragged her around a corner into relative safety to recover her sight. In the meantime he checked for any kind of bullet wounds he might not have noticed. He didn’t smell any blood, just sweat.
He held up a hand, splaying three fingers. “Your sight back? How many fingers am I holdin’ up?” There was a sense of urgency there if only because they had to get moving again. They had triggered a trap and he was sure that soldiers were on their way to see what their trap had caught and no way did he want to stick around to be mutant prey.
“ i can’t give up on you, so please don’t give up on yourself. ”

Don’t give up, even when the seas get rough, something once said in a whole other lifetime for him. But for him, for most of his adult life, giving up had been something that hadn’t exactly been an option. And even if he did, what could he do about it? Giving up posed no risk to himself with his mutation. And sometimes it was simply easier to just give up and let whatever happens happen.
“Now I’m th’ last person t’ be nitpickin’ grammar but-- you can give up,” he said, voice slightly muffled as he rested his head on his forearms. “An’ honestly, y’probab’ly should. I’m only ‘round cause o’ you,” he said, lifting his head up to settle blue eyes on the redheaded woman. He meant it in numerous ways.

“So’m I. Don’t forget the stars y’can never really see in these damn cities we’re always runnin’ through,” he said. “I can’t promise th’ nobody tryin’ to kill us part, though. You know the bad guys always like to spoil a good vacation. At least we’ll have our motorcycles, no?”
