I guess if I had to sum up 2017 in a single paragraph it would be this 'I sold my soul to buy my freedom, thats something im more than happy to live with, its not ideal but its been one of the hardest years of my life, I've been in and out of love. I've gone through 3 jobs, just as many day jobs as I've had since I was 16 and had some of the single best experiences of my life, shit I couldnt of even of dreamed of doing. I released 2 solo projects selling over 60% of the work opening night of both, I worked in 2 other colaborative shows and had my work in a REAL GALLERY with REAL ARTISTS. I've also scrapped a project 3 years in the works because I fell out of love with it, I burned bridges, cut people off and been cut out of people I loved lives. I've been self destructive to the point where it was almost comical if I wasnt systematically leaving a trail of pain. I've been lucky enough to surround myself with the most amazing group of people who are beyond tallented, people who are constantly pushing what they can do with their creativity and its hugely inspiring to see my friends succeed the way they have, the art you guys all produce while it makes me feel utterly inferior inspires the fuck out of me knowing that I have even a small portion of your respect and its really humbling. Basically what I'm saying is that while its been a really long year but I wouldnt change any part of it, I think maybe I'm in a good place now and 2018 might be a bit more mellow, god I could use the break.' And yeah I know that turned into 2 paragraphs but its been a big year. Anyway this photo is one of those images I never thought I'd get to make, @atmosphere @ brotheraliisblind in my home town with me being behind the lens, I was lucky enough to be able to meet those guys and express my gratitude to those guys for the influence they have had on my creative process, the influence they have had on my process is basically the biggest outside of my close friends. I wasnt going to use this photo as a print in the show till @mikeyhunj was looking at the origional zine today and picked this out as a frame he really dug, theres a bunch of reasons why I wouldnt want to hang the photo in the bar i work in because of my feeling towards the person in it, however I'm kinda able to look past that and I trust Hunj like very few other humans out there when it comes to photography and style, his response to seeing this zine is one of the reasons I'm doing this show at all. Going through this zine has got me super nostelgic, I love this photo, its quite innocent in the scheme of things, mind you i was being a bit of a fuckhead but i still hadnt seen that much shit yet, it was one of those last innocent trips for me and it was rad as hell, we just skated great hills an entire weekend and did it on no money with no solid plan, every part of the trip was kinda DIY too which was rad, from little to no planning that went into it (i can remember researching camp grounds on the way up there) to forgetting to bring the roof of my tent $15 Kmart tent, to riding an outlaw event and having the cops rock up cos they thought we had a chainsaw on the track to get fire wood (we'd got a motor bike around the gate to tow riders back up the hill) to just winging it on the way home and driving till we could find a campground that was not where the incoming storm was and ending up in god knows where (i know it was past gundigahi and it was near a lake) we just kinda made do on bugger all budgets. God even Kyrill had to borrow a lid for the trip cos he didnt own a full face lid. Everything about it was so rad and i think we only had like one crash on the trip between 3 guys and I mannaged to save it when my luge's back truck nearly came off. downhill skateboarding is something thats always been a part of my adult life i guess, especially growing up in my mid to late teens it was what I lived for. The sense of community and that i was helping build something that mattered was really important to me, the older role models where people I really looked up to and wanted to be like. The earliest people who validated my photography and videography in meaningful ways were guys in the community. Hell even my first serious assignments were working for a downhill skateboarding magazine. It may not be something i still have the time to do too often but nothing makes me happier than grabbing the sled or the evo and taking a few runs at one of my locals. SO, I've got some pretty awesome news, I'm having my third solo show on the first of next month at @redwoodtastingroom , a killer bar and a space with a lot of potential located in fitzroy. I just want to say a huge thank you to @fortheartco / @jjh_art and everyone who was involved in last night. Im super uncomfy talking about my work so I generally try keep a low profile/turn up late to these things but everyone who came down was rad as hell, i had basically the perfect night and yeah I love you all. if anyone is trying to contact me today this will be DIFFICULT and im sorry ill go back to being a functioning human tomorrow. But I can say that i have some HUGE news coming up in the next few days which I cant wait to share with people formally (those in the know stay quiet please) I planned on doing another solo show this year but that doesnt look too viable right now but this other project is just as cool if not cooler to me for a bunch of other reasons.
