I have this very specific idea for an au, based on the concept that most (if not all) Buried avatars are autistic. “Oh, he was accidentally rude? Yeah, the Buried aligned are just Like That, don’t take it personally.”

Anyways, Buried!Jon has no idea what’s going on, and goes to see if Mike Crew can help him. Now, the Vast and the Buried don’t generally get along, but Mike Crew can see that Jon is genuinely confused and feels obligated to explain. (”Buried avatars do Not make house visits to Vast avatars, idiot.”) 

Jon refuses tea. However, Mike knows that Jon, being a Buried avatar, probably does not mean this as a slight. Mike ends up being Jon’s very reluctant best friend.

I wanna write backstory for Vast!Jon now but I’m torn between his childhood incident being the Distortion’s door following him and him refusing to go indoors when he could help it making his need to wander more severe, or it was Beholding and being out in open spaces although terrible at least calmed him down because whatever was watching wouldn’t be able to sneak up on him. In the Beholding scenario he went to an interview at the Institute but left as soon as he felt the intensity of the stare. In the Spiral scenario the Distortion (Michael) still shows up to annoy him (be his friend). 

I love this picture because even 70 years ago, way up in the Arctic in a culture very different than my own, a 17 year old still had the same “Dad, please hurry up and take the damn picture” expression that characterized every picture taken of me from 2001-2007.
