Can we just stop and acknowledge this for a moment???

Obi-Wan says, “Send me to kill the Emperor.”

Not “defeat.”

Not “fight.”

He says, “kill.”

Send me to kill someone.

I find this so fascinating, especially because people argue that Obi-Wan is a cinnamon bun (an argument I have never bought into, as you can see from this post). Because Clone Wars is a “kid’s show,” we rarely see him kill a living being, so it’s easy to forget that Obi-Wan can be ruthless.

I find it interesting that Yoda would force Obi-Wan to kill Anakin. Kenobi says, “I can’t do it,” but Yoda doesn’t believe him, or at least refuses to accept Obi-Wan’s refusal. Either he believes Obi-Wan is capable of killing his friend, he’s too removed from emotion to acknowledge Kenobi’s deep conflict, or he truly believes Obi-Wan would not succeed against Palpatine and he would rather risk Kenobi failing to kill Vader than failing to kill Sidious.

HOWEVER!!!! They both fail.

Yoda doesn’t defeat Sidious and Obi-Wan leaves Anakin for dead, unable or unwilling to give the deathblow himself.

Obi-Wan Kenobi is fully capable of killing. I believe he would rather not, but he will if necessary. He had no problem cutting Maul in half…and then cracking snarky jokes about it later in life:

And let’s not forget that he literally exploded Durge from the inside out in the Clone Wars Micro Series:

But when it came to his best friend, he walked right up to the edge of death but couldn’t deliver the final blow.

Perhaps what he did was worse?

Perhaps leaving Anakin like that was actually more cruel?

These are the questions that keep me up at night.

But I would love to see a “What if…” scenario where we see Obi-Wan fight Sidious instead. Oh baby that would be some good material!!!!!
