Anonymous asked:

What do Yuuri and Viktor give each other for Valentine's day?

Valentine’s Day is huge is Russia; the ads on tv spend a month leading up to it, every corner shop is filled with huge displays of red and pink hearts, and more importantly, everyone is talking about it.

Victor tries to hold back, he does. But he’s never had someone he’s wanted to spend Valentine’s day with before. He also just assumes that Yuuri feels the same way.

He wakes Yuuri up the morning of the 14th with soft kisses all over his face and body after spending a half hour making the fluffiest omelette ever.

“Mmmn, Victor, just let me sleep,” he groans and rolls over. Victor isn’t put off by it, though, because Yuuri’s never been a morning person. All it takes is a few more involved kisses to wake his sleeping beauty.

Yuuri eyes breakfast skeptically, squinting at it through sleepy eyes and scratching at his stomach as he tries to wake up. His hair is flattened on one side and he’s forgotten his glasses in the bedroom. He’s the picture of perfection to Victor, though, because he’s living here, with Victor, in his apartment. He couldn’t ask for more.

Except, maybe, an acknowledgement of what day it is, maybe? A ‘Happy Valentine’s Day, Victor!’ in that cheerful voice he loves so much. Yuuri just grunts out a ‘this is good, thanks’, to breakfast and devours it quickly, spending the extra five minutes he would have spent getting his cereal ready in the shower waking up.

Which is fine, because if that’s what makes Yuuri happy today, it makes Victor happy too. But he’s made a mistake, because although Yuuri lived in the States for years, it seems there are some Japanese traditions that are hard to shake. Yuuri celebrating Valentine’s like Victor does is one of those things.

He’s skeptical of the flowers Victor presents him with before they leave in the morning. He frowns the whole time as he fills up a vase with water (it’s actually a large beer mug because apparently Victor’s never saved any of the vases that have come with flowers before), and arranges the flowers in it, setting it in the middle of kitchen island.

“Maccachin won’t eat them, will he?” Yuuri asks, still frowning. Victor scowls at his poodle, knowing full well if he’s left unattended with them there will probably be nothing but stems left.

“I was going to bring him to the rink today anyway,” Victor says, clipping the leash that’s hating up by the door to his collar.

Yuuri doesn’t smile, either, when Victor presents him a cute little toy cat holding a heart. “Is this one of Yurio’s?” He asks, putting it on the bench without so much as glancing at it.

Victor pouts for the first half hour of their skate until he has a brilliant idea. He’ll get Yuuri to perform his Eros routine. He has the music on his phone still, and it’s sure to get Yuuri in the mood.

But as soon as the music starts, Yuuri glares at him. “Victor!” He hisses. “I’m not doing that for you right now. Not with everyone watching.” He skips to the next song, refusing to even give Victor a glimpse of that daringly sexy persona.

It only gets worse.

“I have reservations for us tonight,” Victor mentions at lunch. “At this really romantic little bistro. They serve the best linguini this side of Italy.”

Yuuri, although he would probably never turn down a romantic dinner with Victor, frowns a little. “Oh. Really? I was planning on having a Skype call with Minako tonight,” he says. It takes some serious pouting to get Yuuri to go.

Even though he manages to get Yuuri to postpone his call until tomorrow, he still doesn’t seem to understand why they’re at the restaurant. He ignores the subtle decorations around them and proceeds to chatter away to Victor about rink gossip.

Victor was hoping that instead of a lighthearted conversation, they would be huddled over the table together, hands entwined, whispering sweet nothings to each other. Just like everyone else in the restaurant seems to be doing.

He can’t be too angry, though, because Yuuri’s eyes sparkle in delight when he laughs about the newest girlfriend that’s dumped Georgi (right before Valentine’s too, wow, he has horrible luck).

The shining moment of the day, however, (and Victor’s kind of sad to admit it) is when Yuuri allows him to take his hand and walk home together with their fingers intertwined. But it’s something they do every night. He was hoping that Valentines would afford them some extra affection.

Yuuri even turns down a walk through the park on their way home. Too cold. Whatever that means. It’s -5, it’s practically t-shirt weather.

Victor’s a little put out by the time they get home, so he doesn’t even scold Maccachin who’s chewed on two of the roses in the arrangement already. He gives himself a little pep talk, Yuuri’s been colder than this to him before. He just needs to be patient. Sometimes his fiancé needs some time to warm up.

He still has three things up his sleeve still, so to speak. First, there’s the chocolate he’s been saving for desert, second, a nice pair of gold cufflinks that he’s sure Yuuri will like, an third, clean sheets on the bed and a whole night free to dirty them.

He doesn’t even get past the first one. “Supper was great,” Yuuri says, stretching as Victor digs out the small box of chocolates he’s kept hidden in the fridge where neither Yuuri or Maccachin can find them. “But now I’m exhausted. I think I’m going to go to bed early?”

“What?” Victor asks, dropping the box of chocolates on the counter.

“Hmm?” Yuuri yawns. “I’m going to bed. Are you staying up?”

He has to be doing this on purpose, Victor’s sure. There’s no other explanation. Yuuri’s the night owl between the two of them. He rarely goes to bed early. And on a night like tonight? When everyone else in Russia is sharing tender moments with their loved ones? It hurts.

Victor wants to throw a fit. It’s his first proper Valentine’s day and it’s gone exactly the opposite of how he’s planned. He should have spent half the day kissing Yuuri. Instead he’s been rebutted at every advance. There’s no point in storming out now, though. He’s just going to have to accept that Yuuri doesn’t like romantic gestures. It’s something he’s going to have to learn to live with.

“Wait,” Yuuri says, finally looking at the box of chocolates on the counter. “Chocolate?” He has a puzzled look for a second, confused as to why Victor’s allowed guilty pleasure food in the house, until realization seems to dawn on him. He hastily pulls out his phone, checking the date. “Is it-” he starts.

“Valentine’s, yeah.” Victor pouts.

“Oh my god.” Yuuri says, staring at Victor. “So today you were -”

Victor just grits his teeth so he doesn’t say anything rude. He can’t get angry at Yuuri for not remembering the date, can he?

“Oh, I’m so sorry!” He exclaims, slapping his hands on the countertop. “I had no idea.”

“No idea.” Victor repeats. Really? Was Yuuri that oblivious.

“No, I-” he pauses, like he doesn’t know how to explain himself. “It’s just… Valentine’s day in Japan, well, it’s usually the girls who give chocolate. There isn’t all this-” He gestures with his hands to the apartment, to the flowers sitting between them. “And the men, they don’t- not until…”

Victor licks his lips. He probably should have read up on Japanese traditions.

“I’m sorry,” Yuuri says softly when Victor doesn’t say anything. “Is there anything I can do to make it up to you?”

Victor’s eyes slide from the chocolate to Yuuri to the bedroom. He doesn’t need to say anything else.

Exactly a month later, Victor’s woken up by soft kisses before his alarm goes off. “Viiiiictor,” Yuuri breathes against his cheek.

“Mmmnn?” Victor moans, blinking awake. He squints at Yuuri in the low light of the room.

“Happy White’s Day,” Yuuri says without pre-amble, holding out a box of chocolates for Victor. “I promise that next year we’ll celebrate Valentine’s how you want. But for now, let’s please use today as a replacement.”

I’m really alarmed by the misinformation I see on social media right now, so here is a little simplified guide to WTF is going on.

(Edited to work better for tumblr, I originally just made screenshots for Twitter)

What is a NAZI?

Nazi is an abbreviation for National Socialism (Nationalsozialismus) an ideology associated primarily with the 20th-century German Nazi Party (especially while it was being led by Adolt Hitler). The idea that National Socialism lived and died primarily through Hitler is actually a myth propagated by post-war propaganda and Hollywood. America destroyed those Nazis!! YAY!! – Wrong, They still exist. Although not under that name. Any far-right groups is basically a “Nazi” party (many even used the term “National Socialism” until a re-branding in the 80’s.

The German political scientist Klaus von Beyme describes three historical phases in the development of far-right parties in Western Europe after World War II.

From 1945 to the mid-1950s, far-right parties were marginalized, and their ideologies were discredited due to the recent existence and defeat of Nazism – because people were murdered. In droves. Like millions of people. Death camps are REAL. 11 million people died, including 1.1 million children. Thus in the years immediately following World War II, the main objective of far-right parties was survival; achieving any political impact at all, was largely not expected.

From the mid-1950s to the 1970s, the so-called “populist protest phase” emerged with sporadic electoral success. During this period, far-right parties drew to them charismatic leaders whose profound mistrust of the political establishment led to an “us-versus-them” mind set: “us” being the nation’s citizenry, “them” being the politicians and bureaucrats who were then in office; beginning in the 1980s, the electoral successes of far-right political candidates made it possible for far-right political parties to revitalize anti-immigration as a mainstream issue.

What does anybody in the far right REALLY support?

How politics work is that there is two sides. The right and the left. In the middle, Liberalism and democracy.

The far-right isn’t about the “working man” at all. That’s what the LEFT is about. The Left is ALL about the public being in control. There is currently no major leftist parties in power in America (Democrats are closer to the middle - center-right, actually. They just get called the left party because nobody is).

What the right really advocates is private economic ownership (aka the rich getting’ richer), racial hierarchy (whites better than everyone else) and Social Darwinism (which is the idea that “weak” humans, aka the old, the sick, etc, deserve to be removed. That means gradually killed. Don’t get attached to your grandma). Extreme right-wing politicians are usually extreme nationalists (“bringing back JOBS to AMERICANS” = eventually they will exploit you as workers void of rights), and are opposed to immigration. They are also profoundly chauvinistic (that means women are seen as inferior).

Is Trump a representative of the extreme right?

Most definitely, since he supports all that was listed above. Loudly, too.

So, Trump isn’t going to really help the so-called American Working Man?

Who even is that? Everybody American works, no matter who they are. But if you mean that you’re a white middle class American, then you’ll get candy for a year and then be abused just like the rest of us. You’re already losing your rights to free information and healthcare. So, you might as well join the fight with us.

Who is Richard B. Spencer?

Richard Bertrand Spencer (born May 11, 1978) is an American white nationalist, known for promoting white supremacist views. He is president of the National Policy Institute, a white nationalist think-tank, and Washington Summit Publishers, an independent publishing firm. Spencer has stated that he rejects the description of white supremacist, and describes himself as an identitarian. He advocates for a white homeland for a “dispossessed white race” and calls for “peaceful ethnic cleansing” to halt the “deconstruction” of European culture.

The Identitarian movement is a European political movement that started in France in 2002 and is basically all about destroying anybody who is a shade darker then milk. The Identitarian movement has a close linkage to members of the German New Right, aka Neo-Nazis.

So this guy is definitely a “Nazi”.

Was it ok to punch him?

It’s never ok to punch someone who has not provoked you. HOWEVER, what Spencer is doing is saying: I want to hurt people. I want to hurt people a lot. Not today. But, tomorrow, maybe. His very existence and allegiance is a constant menace. Picture it this way, if you met a guy in the park and he said hi, I don’t have a gun today, but I might tomorrow, and I might come back to shoot people, would you just ignore him? No. So in conclusion, march peacefully, but do punch Nazis.

This is the American scale.

I really want to point this out because it’s a legitimate thing that Trump is far more extreme right than you may think. It also explains why this is a thing that happened. See, compared to many other countries in the world, my own included, the American political spectrum is offset to the right.

So what OP said about there not being an extreme left is absolutely true, there’s barely a left to begin with.

I’d like to point out that this is a recorded phenomenon in political science and not my own biased interpretation of your politics. Noam Chomsky—cognitive scientist, historian, social critic, and political activist among other things (this guy pops up in my university classes from time to time; the dude’s part of the curriculum whether that says anything to you or not)—has been pretty outspoken about this.

“… so what [Republicans have] done is mobilized sectors of the population that have always been there but have never really been politically mobilized, like Evangelical Christians, the nativists who are afraid that ‘they’ are taking our country away from us, white racists, … gun-people who are so terrified that they have to carry their guns into church because maybe somebody’ll come after them.

You know, these sectors of the population are there, and that’s now the base of the Republican party.”

So, this election night was a shocking, absolutely horrifying blow to my American friends. Even my friends here in Canada couldn’t come to terms with it. I saw panic attacks, fears about even visiting American relatives in the States again, and even a depressive loss of faith in humanity. How could this be where the world is today?

Because, it’s this gradual shift to the right that’s so insidious, that happened for a variety of complex reasons, I’m sure, that can to some make it seem like the current Republican party is a reasonable center-right party, when in actuality they are legitimately far right. And as such, able to take advantage of these small groups on the outside that have desperately wanted a podium for a long time.

So, no, you’re not imagining it, America. This isn’t normal. Punch some Nazis, if that’s what it takes.

side note: This is what we call the Overton Window and that is a really good visual of it.

It’s also important to point out that this isn’t just the United States and it never really was. Even now, because of Brexit and Trump’s election, the radical nationalist/fascist/racist/sexist/whatever end of the political spectrum is now being galvanized globally with the success and encouragement of this and aided by political echo-chambers in media, the internet, and small communities.

Nationalist movements are picking up again in France and Germany and even Canada now has at least three people running for the Conservative Party leadership on a Trump-like storm.

Honestly near the center (preferably just slightly to the left) is where you want things to be. Too far right and you get Hitler's concentration camps and too far left and you get Stalin's gulags.

Hold the phone.

The Uber demonization began because of two things: The CEO’s position on a Trump advisory board, and more recently because Uber didn’t pull all their drivers from the airport areas during the Taxi strike.

Please tell me I’m not the only one who thinks that’s more than a little silly?

Firstly, Uber is not a taxi company. They do not have the power to force their drivers, who are NOT employees but CONTRACTORS, to stay away from the airport without penalizing them.

Do you know what Uber DID do?

  • Completely disabled Surge pricing at the airport areas so that those affected by the strike could get a ride at regular rates instead of being gouged. But that doesn’t matter?
  • They’re offering aid to employees and drivers who will be negatively impacted by the ban. But that doesn’t matter?
  • The CEO, who is on a Trump advisory board, is trying to talk Trump out of the ban. But that doesn’t matter?

The taxi strike, while for a noble cause, also HURT many people. Uber stepped in to provide a service where people were being denied. Uber allowed people the opportunity to go home to their families while the strike was happening. Uber allowed people to get to meetings on time while the strike was happening.

To those of you who don’t use Uber, they also disabled Surge while this was going on. Surge pricing applies a multiplier to the cost of your trip depending on how in-demand drivers are at any given time. Considering the strike, this would have meant people using the service may have had to pay triple their fares to get home. Uber turned that off so that people could get home safely without breaking the bank.

And y’all are also coming forward and demonizing the CEO for having “Trump ties”. In his words, it’s better to have a seat at the table to have a say in how things go ahead. Honestly, I don’t have much more to say beyond that. He took the position because he wanted to be able to push things in the right direction in his own way.

BY THE WAY. I know how much Tumblr loves Moana. Are you guys going to boycott that too since Bob Iger, Disney’s CEO, is on the exact same advisory board?

Disclaimer: I am Canadian. I dislike Trump. I think he’s an orange idiot who should not be in charge of a company, let alone a country. I worry for, fear for, my family and friends in the US. But I also can’t stand only seeing one side of an argument presented. Sorry for the rant. I really do hate seeing this site take a half-truth and running it to the extreme. I’mma go to bed now.

Thanks for this post. When I heard about the taxi strike it honestly struck me as rather ableist so I'm glad there was at least someone who stepped in. Can you imagine if a chronically ill person, tired and in pain, was stuck at the airport with no way to get home?

If they show sports events at bars why don’t they show tv shows?

someone should get to making a fandom bar.

no but can you imagine? fandom themed drinks, tv show maraton nights, discount to cosplayers, and special season finale events.

WHY ISNT THIS A THING??!!

Wow, I don’t even kind of get this. I genuinely have no idea what this post is about. Please someone explain or I will combust

The picture’s from sometime in 2014, where there was basically going to be a “tumblr con” and there was going to be lots of fandom stuff there, and a lot of people were really excited and hyped about going. However when the time for the actual event came up, most of the actors and musicians who were going to be there did not show up (I’m pretty sure it was because the people running the event didn’t set up the payment for them right? I’m not sure if that’s right but I do remember there was a mistake that happened) and so basically people went to this place and payed like $150 just to awkwardly stand around this huge overpriced building with nothing to do, except they could pay for extra time in the ball pit, but I don’t think that really ended up mattering? So during that complete flop pictures of the ball pit became a meme and are now used whenever someone suggests anything that sounds like a tumblr meet-up

Avatar
wardahahmar

Honestly it wasn't a terrible idea but it failed because it was done by people who had absolutely no experience with running cons. Fandom bars do totally exist tho you probably would need to go to a major city to find one but they are run by people who have knowledge about running a bar. Having a good idea is not enough.

a solid 80% of su complaints boil down to “even though the show is in progress, i assume this will never change”

to provide some examples:

“they didn’t resolve X issue well” one thing about su is that a lot of characters and plotlines are still developing, slowly, and issues are often built up for a while before they’re even talked about. even then, they’re not supposed to be resolved right away. this is not new. amethyst’s insecurities have been present since day one. they’ve just now been talked about in the open, for the first time since on the run and reformed. if you don’t think an issue was really “resolved”, there’s a pretty good chance that was intentional, and it’s gonna be brought up again later.

“the relationship between A and B was poorly handled” ok, but su is a show where temporarily resolutions are deliberately imperfect. i know this is very different from how a lot of shows work - in traditional “arcs”, the status quo is often that everyone get along fine between drama - while su is a show where tensions are allowed to linger for seasons (pearl and greg, for instance)do you really think the AB relationship will never be brought up again, in a show so mindful of its continuity?

“when is C coming back?” it took 30+ episodes to build up rose quartz. this was before we even heard her voice, and many eps before we saw her as a flawed, realistic character. we got introduced to corrupted monsters 20+ episodes before they were humanized, and that sympathy was just for one monster. you could reasonably say, back then, that there were some uncomfortable implications with “you’re not a monster anymore!” (read: you’re one of the good ones! i trained you like a good puppy!), but that wasn’t the “final message”. they’ve come into focus again, which has allowed steven’s perspective to change. he wants to help all corrupted gems, he understands them better, and taught peridot to be less ableist about the whole thing.

TL;DR: i think steven universe is very good at establishing tensions, letting them linger, and making the audience wonder and want for certain things before giving it to them. that’s what makes it satisfying when issues are finally brought up again. i can think of very few plotlines, character arcs and issues that are 100% “done”, and for me, this is mostly a strength.

i know many people prefer traditional arcs where they talk about an issue for a few episodes, then have a Good Moral Message about how its “supposed” to be handled, but that’s just… not… what su is. especially as its primarily a character-driven show, and none of these characters are upstanding, morally pure Role Models™. that’s partly why the show is from steven’s perspective - a well-meaning kid who is still pushy, biased and makes mistakes while figuring out what’s right. he’s not supposed to represent the “right” opinion or be a complete audience avatar, because he’s still figuring all this stuff out himself.

Avatar

The bomb format and long hiatuses probably aren’t helping in terms of how people perceive the show’s pacing. Sometimes it can take months before we get the next tiny piece of the puzzle regarding a character’s backstory or an underlying issue, even if said pieces are actually only one or two episodes apart.

Avatar
vivesarrives

All of this. It really bothers me when people get snippy about this show, and it’s always this one in particular. They can’t just wait and see and reserve judgement until things are resolved in the plot? Seems like it never occurred to some people. Bunch of impatient, overly-critical whiners.

Apparently once a character implies something that might possibly be ideologically “impure” that’s grounds for immediate judgement and condemnation of the character, the show, everyone who works on the show… And then that leads to people directly messaging the show runners about it like bunch of stupid entitled pissbabies.

I like the fandom in general, I like the steven universe plot analysis people, the cover songs people, the artists, the people who are productive or who just enjoy the show. The part of the fandom that lives to complain about perceived slights is just… annoying

Movie Review: Love on Ice; the supposed Yuri on Ice doppelgänger

Hey there folks, so now that the latest discourse has shifted over to the Crunchyroll Anime Award results. Here’s my review for the supposed YOI doppelgänger: “Love on Ice” I recorded from last weekend.

First of all, Love on Ice is nothing like Yuri on Ice in any way shape, form, or in premise. So relax your pretty faces.

The movie starts out pretty much as I would expect from a Hallmark Channel movie. Bright little town, a few cheesy lines here and there but it’s surprisingly toned down. This movie was more about the characters than the actual sport. Skating was just the backdrop and the focus real was on Emily James’ inner turmoil and guilt than her skill as a skater.

Emily was a former pro who abandoned her career and chances at the Olympics when her mom passes away during training. From then on, she stayed in her hometown and been teaching ice skating at her home rink to get by. She meets her soon-to-be coach, Spenser, when he comes to town to coach a former student of hers, Nikki, for the upcoming local competition. He also just so happens to be a huge fan of Emily during her skating career. (What are the odds?!)

They first meet at her part-time job at the cafe and they meet up again when she’s teaching her class. He’s trying to keep Nikki’s suffocating-helicopter Mom from dictating everything during practice so he asks Emily to be the buffer to ease the tension for Nikki. Meanwhile, Spenser convinces Emily to consider coming back to the ice as a competitor while coaching Nikki as well. This doesn’t sit right with helicopter mom and she hires a new coach for her daughter. To be honest, this wouldn’t have been as big of an issue if they had the balls to tell helicopter mom that he was also taking on Emily but whatever.

The other coach Helicopter mom hires is another former coach of Emily. At first, I thought they were former rivals by the extent of her jealousy and resentment towards Emily but they never clarify the history between Emily and this former coach. They just painted her as the glory-hungry coach and that’s all she is. This chick goes as far as to implant drama that Spenser is using Emily’s comeback to propel his credibility as a coach.

That strife was resolved rather quickly in less than a 15-20 minutes. Even helicopter mom was like: “damn, you’re a stone-cold bitch, even for my taste.” -goes back to Spenser as a coach without telling Bitchy coach that she’s fired- lol

So the BIG competition finally arrives….in the last 10 minutes. They do a montage of all the skaters on the ice, spinning around and maybe a jump or two. The most ridiculous part of that segment was the: Emily James and Nikki are tied for first place. There’s no such thing as a TIE in figure skating as far as I know (it seems pretty impossible when you’re accounting for technical and performance scores. Plus, what are the odds of having the same total score as another skater?) but I laughed pretty hard.

At the end of the Free Skate, it was kinda messed up. Nikki wins gold, Emily wins silver, and a random chick wins bronze. Nikki then pulls up Emily to the top podium to join her but not the other medalist? Not very sportsmanship, Nikki. /wags finger of shame. And yeah, Emily and Spenser hook up in the end and I assume that she’s taking her comeback seriously because they are at the rink at the crack of dawn to practice?

Overall, it was cheesy but enjoyable, I actually enjoyed it. lol There were a couple of cute, sassy characters that were fun to watch interact. Even a little character redemption for helicopter mom. The only thing this movie shared in common with Yuri on Ice was the title wording and the sport. That’s it.

It’s not even in the same league as Yuri on Ice, nor was it the films intention to be considered in that way. It’s TV movie with a decent plot and fun characters.

An abused child having her first home-cooked meal is definitely more heart-warming than a kiss. But like…can y’all stop being such assholes about it? I’ve seen people say that whoever voted for YOI in that category are heartless for choosing a kiss over an abused child, but I literally have never seen Erased.

So I didn’t know the significance of that scene. Even watching it ooc without watching the anime was a bit confusing. Like I caught on that she was happy for getting a real home-cooked meal for once, but I had no idea she was an abused child, I feel like you’d have to have actually watched the anime to know that.

I barely watch new anime much anymore, so a lot of the anime that was nominated I hadn’t seen either. So there are probably a lot of other people in the same boat as me.

On a side note, idk why the Victuuri kiss was nominated when the airport scene was 100 times more heart-warming lol

You can't really expect people to vote for something they didn't even watch. For some people YOI was the first anime they had watched in a long time. Some other people have a huge backlog and only watched one or two new ones. Some other people have narrow tastes and only watch certain genres. Not everyone watches every anime that comes out and nobody should be shamed just because they weren't familiar with all the options so they went with the one they know.
