Last Words

“This isn’t just about me. It’s about Taylor too. She’s alive. We need your help.”

With these final words, Nolan was shoved to his bloody death on the spikes below.

While there are many suspects and potential motives, one possibility to consider is that these very words – with the revelation that Taylor is alive – is what actually sealed his fate.

And in entertaining this idea, the one who naturally stands out from the crowd as the likely killer is mama Hotchkiss herself.

From the first moment Claire was introduced, we got a taste of the obsessive level of control she exerts over Nolan, and likewise did over Taylor.

Claire was immediately suspicious of Ava’s presence at the house, and made a point of telling Nolan that he’s “on the right track with Caitlin,” thus steering him away from the relationship he wants, and towards the one she wants for him. Which is (not coincidentally) the one that will maintain the best public image for the family, and you can bet the political ties to a senator and potential president are a huge factor here.

When Nolan mentioned he’d rather not join the rowing crew this year, citing a need for more personal time, Claire once again redirected him towards her own wishes, using a complimentary tone to coerce him. “You can handle it, Nolan. You always do."

As if that bit of meddling were not enough, she took things to a whole other level in calling for Beacon Guard surveillance on Nolan.

But Nolan was smart; he knew how to humor her, and how to give her what she wanted without actually giving in. He also had methods of working around Beacon Guard.

So we can see the game they’ve been playing right along.

Just prior to his death, Nolan went to meet Taylor at her cabin. But someone in a white car followed him there.

It’s very likely that Claire was in this car, because once Nolan went "off the grid,” the Beacon Guard surveillance was useless. So if she wanted to stay in the loop, she had to do it the old fashioned way: by following him.

Nolan brought a bag of groceries into the cabin, so if Claire was watching, this was probably the point where she started to get really suspicious about what he was up to and who he was meeting with.

Inside the cabin, Nolan claimed to know someone who could help them. Taylor was hesitant at first, but eventually agreed to bring this mystery person into the fold.

Now we can be pretty sure Nolan’s mystery person was Alison.

After leaving the cabin, Nolan headed to Thorne Hall, and sent a text to Alison, asking to meet on the roof.

This text was either a Hail Mary, or a critical error in judgment, because all of the phone and data traffic on campus gets routed through Beacon Guard. So even if Nolan had sent the text from a “safe zone,” Alison’s house is not safe, and the message would have to pass Beacon Guard’s filters before reaching her phone.

Knowing the level of surveillance on Nolan, and Claire’s personal interest in his affairs, it’s reasonable that she could have intercepted or blocked his text message to Alison.

At some point the fear of losing control had to be smacking Claire in the face, so she pulled the plug, causing the temporary “blackout” of Beacon Guard which delayed the text from reaching Alison’s phone until the next day.

The blackout also afforded Claire a window of opportunity to confront Nolan herself and demand answers, without being seen on camera.

Along the way to Thorne Hall, Claire overheard Nolan’s friends plotting and laughing about killing him.

Nolan was expecting Alison, so when someone showed up on the roof, he just started talking. Even though it was dark and he probably couldn’t see who it really was, he thought he was talking to Alison.

Claire just listened and played along. But once Nolan dropped the truth bomb, that Taylor had faked her death, maybe the shock and absolute betrayal from both of her children was just too much to handle.

For someone who exercises such an obsessive need for control, to realize she’d been played the fool, would make this a very plausible snapping point for Claire.

Maybe she snapped and pushed him. Maybe it was not her actual intent to kill him, but he fell backwards and went over the edge, and it was a done deal.

Fortunately for Claire, her tracks are already well covered.

With everyone at BHU a suspect, she could pin this murder on pretty much anyone, and have some fun doing it.

Snap and Kill

(Blood on his hands? Could be some bloody good foreshadowing.)

“At BHU we’ll do whatever it takes to stay on top. We thrive under pressure, and strive for perfection. But no one’s perfect, and the pressure is building to a breaking point. And someone is about to snap, and kill.”

Interestingly enough, if we interpret The Perfectionists’ introductory monologue in its purest sense, in terms of (academic) pressure pushing a student to eventually “snap and kill,” then of the main trio of suspects, Dylan best fits the profile.

Caitlin’s motive would be based on her mom’s political career and her own future ambitions, and being a fake girlfriend to Nolan. While Ava’s would seem to be centered around relationship woes, or possibly something to do with her internship/business.

Sure there’s pressure, and they each have problems with Nolan. But where’s the urgency? I’m not sold on the idea that either of these two are really on the verge of snapping.

“You know, I feel bad about Dylan doing my work. We’re all under enough pressure as it is,” Ava says while lounging by the pool.

Dylan, on the other hand, is shouldering a triple workload at school, his relationship, music scholarship (and identity) are in jeopardy (“music… is everything that I am” / “everything [he’s] worked for”) and he faces possible expulsion.

It’s all very understated, but if you put it together, it really does paint the picture of a student who could “snap” at any minute.

He’s essentially facing death (in a psychological sense), and his back is against the wall. This threat and the drive to survive make him fairly compelling as a potential killer.

Dylan was introduced as the one who’s “always right,” but perhaps more significantly, Nolan called him “the smartest guy I know."

Considering Mona’s allusion to the “dangerous,” potentially weaponized nature of Nolan’s own intelligence, I’m not sure that was a compliment.

It could hint at some darkness within.

“You have no idea what I’m like when I’m angry,” he warns Nolan.

And I kind of believe him.

After all, this series is titled The Perfectionists for a reason. The truth is "nobody’s perfect,” so we can expect a major theme to be that of presentation versus reality.

“Always said I was a good kid…”

This lyrical match up is a bit chilling, coming after Alison figured out that Dylan wrote the papers, based on repeated patterns throughout his work.

“It’s your gift for words that gave you away,” she tells him.

Much like the blood on his finger, this could be a nice potential foreshadowing of him ultimately getting caught as Nolan’s killer.

The word meticulous appears several times across the papers he wrote. While Dylan does seem to be a detail oriented guy, I don’t think this murder was a meticulous plan by any means.

I’m not convinced it was planned at all.

Perhaps the most important thing to take away from the meeting in the woods is that they part ways with no solutions and no plans moving forward.

Which is okay for Caitlin and Ava. They can go home and go to bed and wake up no worse off than before.

Dylan, however, still faces Alison’s 24-hour ultimatum regarding the plagiarized papers. He either gets expelled, or faces the wrath of Nolan. Neither choice will end well for Dylan. But he still has to make one. He’s got to do something.

Unlike the others, there’s a real urgency and a call to action on Dylan’s part. So do we really believe he just went home with nothing solved?

Up on the rooftop of Thorne Hall, Nolan makes a plea for help. He needs a recruit who’s savvy enough to help take down Beacon Guard, or whoever’s hijacked that system for their own nefarious purposes.

Who better to ask than Dylan, the most dependable and “smartest guy” he knows? The one who always delivers the goods?

“I know someone we can trust,” Nolan told Taylor.

Of course trust would come easy when that “someone” is Dylan, who’s already firmly under Nolan’s thumb. Even more so if Dylan has lingering feelings for Nolan, which could be the motivation behind Nolan’s more humbled manner and the “I’m sorry I’ve been such an asshole” speech.

But at this point it’s just salt on the wound. Dylan’s fed up with Nolan’s games, and he’s not about to be put in that position again. He’s on the verge of losing everything. The clock is ticking. The pressure’s on. He’s got the means and motive, and a need to take immediate action.

Perhaps the opportunity presented itself, and the absolute nerve of Nolan wanting more from him after he’s already been stretched so thin is what caused Dylan to finally “snap and kill.”

How ironic would it be for the guy who writes everyone’s papers to turn around and plagiarize Caitlin’s fantasy of killing Nolan?

Remember, Dylan was the one who introduced the idea of murder, saying outright “we could kill him.” The whole time, he kept (jokingly) pushing the idea, almost as if he was feeling them out to see if they would (seriously) go for it. He called Caitlin’s vision “great,” said “murder can be justified,” and hey – Dylan’s always right – so maybe he actually believes it.

With Nolan the provocateur now dead, it’s likely that Alison will drop the plagiarism issue and give Dylan a second chance, considering that it won’t happen again, and the fact that she really wants to help these kids.

Nolan’s death solves most of Dylan’s problems and pressures, while adding a new one.

As for Nolan dying in this particular manner, it sort of draws the main three together as suspects/accomplices by default, adding layers of complexity and confusion to a crime that might actually be very simple and obvious when it’s all said and done.

Maybe Mona has NOT learned …

She is playing a game (chess) with an anonymous opponent who she has declared is the smartest possible opponent.

Doesnt this remind anyone of when she was playing games with other “teammates” turned into opponents whose identities she didn’t know? She did so much for Charlotte and Alex Drake and had no idea who she was playing with / working for ..

I think her comment to Ali about having a life and justifying that by explaining playing this game is symbolic of the fact that whether she realizes it or not, Mona is behind some of the mysteries going on in this show because she has no idea what she’s gotten into with Beacon Defense (or whatever they’re calling it, forgive me I forgot).

I definitely think she is doing someone’s dirty work without realizing it. I mean, she designed Beacon Guard, I wouldn’t be surprised if she was manipulated into thinking that it’s something that it’s not.

By the end of [Season] 7B, we’ll know who killed Charlotte and we’ll learn that in a very dramatic fashion. It will be a driving force right when we come back in Episode 11, but that mystery will not be solved until the end.

I JUST REALISED SOMETHING.

When the girls were in the dollhouse spencer was standing right by Charles/Charlotte and said there was something familiar about them.

When CeCe got revealed as A we all just kind of brushed away the fact that it didn’t really make sense why CeCe would feel familiar to Spencer as they spent no time together.

After revealing that Spencer and Charlotte are actually sisters makes sense. Spencer said it felt like a cousin or someone you knew from a long time ago. Maybe they were together as kids but stopped as soon as they were old enough to remember.

It all makes sense now why Spencer would feel like Charles/Charlotte is familiar

Can we talk about how after Ezra first proposed and Aria said she needed time and left to go home, Ezra STILL called her to make sure she got home safety.

When she came over the next day to talk to him, he immediately opens with telling her it’s completely okay if she’s not ready and doesn’t want to get married.

AND he STILL wants to marry her and re-proposes to her after she tells him she kinda accidentally killed somebody again.

Ezra Fitz loves this girl so damn much.
