I have just discovered that there are 341 works in the ao3 tag “Canadian Shack”….. as a Canadian idek what to say. I can’t believe that’s like…. a trope

Avatar

Oh! Oh! I know all about this!

As a Canadian, you are presumably familiar with the 1990s buddy-cop TV show Due South, about a RCMP constable named Benton Fraser, who has come to Chicago on the trail of the killers of his father and for reasons that do not need exploring at this juncture has remained, attached as liaison with the Canadian consulate. Anyway, it's a buddy cop show about Fraser the Mountie and his Chicago cop partner Ray, who is a different person depending on which season of the show you are watching.

So dS fandom shipped Fraser/Ray, Fraser/Ray (the other Ray) -- and, yes, the ship wars were legendary -- and, for the truly daring, Ray/Ray. The series finale "The Call of the Wild" ended with Fraser and one of the Rays in the Northwest Territories, sledding off into the sunset together on an adventure. So naturally fandom wrote a lot of fic about what this adventure consisted of and how it very possibly involved Fraser and Ray together in a shack, in Canada. (Fraser does actually at one point have a cabin somewhere around there in canon, IIRC, so the fanon that he might at some point once again end up in a cabin somewhere in the Canadian north isn't actually coming out of nowhere.)

Anyway, so fic about Fraser and one of the Rays in a Canadian shack became a popular premise for a whole lot of post-series fic, and then the thing that happened was that a bunch of Due South authors looked around at the massive amounts of Canadian Shack stories in their fandom and thought, "Hey! What if we had a multi-fandom challenge where all of our other fandoms ended up in a Canadian shack too?" and that led to 101 Ways To End Up In A Canadian Shack, which as the name suggests is 101 ficlets by various writers in various fandoms (many of which are not set in Canada, or in North America, or even on Earth) all running with the Canadian Shack trope from Due South.

And then, as happens with fanon, other fans who might not have even been familiar with the Due South origin picked up the trope and ran with it because who doesn't want to stick their OTP in a shack together because hooray forced-proximity tropes, and it became a thing that took on a life of its own, and that's where we are today.

So, yeah. It's one of those tropes that maybe makes a little more sense in its originating fandom but that everyone else has subsequently adopted in their own fandoms -- like the daemons from His Dark Materials or the psychic wolves from the Iskryne series, or, for a certain value of "making sense in its original fandom," Sentinel/Guide tropes (which are based on a popular genre of very intricate AUs in Sentinel fandom and doesn't really have much basis in canon).

“If I had time travel I’d kill Hitler” “If I had time travel I’d stop my favourite politician getting assassinated” you’re all thinking way too small. If I had time travel I’d stop Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin from dying on the moon due to Soviet sabotage, kicking off the Great Nuclear War and devastating half of the planet.

Good Job.

It’s from two days ago fam how many times could there have been

do you think no one else has time travel

Happy one month anniversary to this post that has not allowed me a single day of fucking peace since I made it.

STOP IT’S BEEN MONTHS. MONTHS!

YOU CAN STOP.

stating to think there’s an inverse correlation between how good media is and how easily fandomizable it is 😁

good media should make you stare at wall for 2 hours instead of immediately starting shippings wars and coffeeshop au and slowburn fics

no no you’re not wrong but also

there’s a reason for this.

My personal theory is that if Media is REALLY good, there isn't really... space, if you will for fans to add or change perspectives on it. Too dense, too complete. Like how coral won't grow on plastic because it's too smooth

Whereas some half-baked hot garbage has got ALL KINDS of plot holes, incomplete characterization, warped timelines, missing worldbuilding and other Spaces for fans to colonize, like coral growing on a sunken battleship.

And then if a series just sucks too much, it's not fun to interact with at all, and people won't fandomize it because it's toxic. Like how coral won't grow on sunken piles of burnt-out tires.

I call this the Fandom Barrier-Reef Theory.

^^^^^^^This this this this this, if the show is truly superb there’s not a whole lot of room for fanfic, but when it isn’t etc etc this exactly, I’ve been saying it for years but never seen anyone else say it, so thank you!!!

one of my favorite stupid things to do in fanfic is to throw two characters together who literally never interact. and then give them an entire, fleshed-out relationship dynamic that exists nowhere but my own head. yes they’ve literally never spoken. yes their relationship is important to me. hope this helps.

so this one has breached containment a bit but like, in a fun way. i love reading the tags and having no idea who you’re talking about but reveling in our shared experience of silly fanfics. or, sometimes, KNOWING who you’re talking about and going “dang that is niche love that”. please continue to tag this with every fictional character dynamic that never happened that you’ve gotten invested in I love them. also please continue calling out your friends I love that too

This guy knows what he’s talking about. He’s one of the lead writers for Leverage and if you ever watch the series on DVD, do yourself a favor and listen to him talk about how the scripts got written. Some of the advice he has is stuff I use all the time: 1. Don’t introduce an important plot person or thing after the first half of the story. 2. Always tie up loose ends. 3. Introduce important things in the middle of unimportant things. 4. If you have to infodump, find an emotion to tie it to and it will seem less like infodump and more like a motive rant. Seriously this guy knows how to write.

fic: returning the favor (how, how, how)

“Why are you doing this?” Alhaitham asked quietly. He asked it more to the bowl of soup than to Kaveh himself. Kaveh put a hand on his hip, holding out the spoon for Alhaitham to take.

“What do you mean, why? Like I’m just supposed to leave you to suffer?”

“You’re going to catch… whatever this is. It’s the better choice to just go to work like normal and leave me alone to let it run its course.”

Kaveh scoffed. “Well, that’s just heartless. Would you have left me like this?”

“Yes.” - Kaveh takes care of Alhaitham when he comes home sick - Alhaitham can't understand why he did it, much less how to go about making them even.

ARE YOU THE AUTHOR OF THAT LEOKUMI FIC? it was so cute, thank you so much for writing it! I don't remember my log in for ao3 so I wasn't able to leave a comment, but your fic brought me so much joy and I wanted to tell you. I LOVE the way you write leo and takumi!

Aww I am indeed that author! Thank you so much, I’m so glad you liked it! This just made my day ❤️

fic: I Won’t Tell (The Whole World Knows)

“Oh fuck,” he whispered, sitting up quickly and jabbing his thumb on the screen to pause the video. That was his sweatshirt. That was Takumi’s archery club sweatshirt, the one he’d forgotten the last time he’d followed Leo home to beg his help on their biology lab, and Leo was wearing it here in this tik tok for the entire world to see.

- Leo swipes one of Takumi's sweatshirts and Takumi only kind of loses his mind about it

Fandom is not about cancellable opinions it’s about sharing and spreading art and fics and gif sets and poetry and showering each other in praise and tearing up because someone said something nice about a thing you made and writing posts that say reblog to give the person you reblogged this from a kiss on the forehead actually
