Final Element was pointed out to me by the awesome Square Tetromino, and the alpha footage has certainly caught my attention. This action-sidescroller beat-‘em-up features an apocalyptic sci-fi setting, arcadey magical ninja combat, RPG elements, cool effects, and the kind of chunky sprites that appeal to me so much. Actually, the art is being updated before the final release, but it will still be pixel art—though I don’t know how chunky.

This game incorporates a number of unique ideas that elevate it above your everyday brawler. In Final Element, reality is falling apart due to the planet having been swallowed by a black hole. You can harness 9 different elemental powers to better kick pixel ass. Levels are semi-randomly generated, and their difficulty is variable depending on your actions and the passage of time. You can’t be killed; instead of dying, you are shunted to the realm of semi-reality and must escape to continue where you left off. And every level is promised to be stuffed to the gills with secrets and hidden areas.

Final Element achieved over 150% of its modest goal on Kickstarter, and thanks to all the support, developer Tri Hard Games is currently working on a public demo. You can keep track of Final Element on IndieDB and on tumblr.

Updates!

We've been working super hard on making combat as fun as possible in Final Element. Probably one of the most fun things about it, is how fluid the game feels as you're pounding enemies. Your main punch is now a 3 punch combo. What that means is you don't just fire 3 punches each time you hit it. Each time you hit punch, it rolls into the next punch, with the 3rd punch doing a knockback. One thing that you guys may or may not notice is the way damage is registered has changed. The enemies don't become invincible like you do anymore. As fast as you can dump on them is as fast as they take damage. Same goes for destroyable objects. Combos have been added in, and let me tell you; They are awesome. We have upped the enemy AI, as well as the enemy engine to make it as awesome as we possibly can. Enemies that fly, run, charge at you, teleport, block, dodge, and other crazy mofo things. The element graphics themselves look absolutely great, and the hitsparks are fantastic. Each element has it's own death animation. Meaning when you destroy an enemy, they will die differently depending on which element is used. We have added a new type of resource! It's called Semi reality shards. These shards drop off of just about anything you can destroy. You use semi reality shards to level up elements. For instance: say you have been using space most of the game, but you just got a timeless earth that you really want to use, but you're already halfway through the game and you don't want to farm the experience for earth all over again. You use shards to level up earth so you can keep seamlessly playing. Shards are also used for crafting your pet! That's right, you will have a pet in final element. It requires a lot of shards, but once you get it, it will follow you around and help destroy enemies. The pet can evolve twice. We aren't sure if it will evolve after being fed shards, or just by normal gameplay. You can now choose the element you want to start off with! If you hate fire, no problem! Pick any of the starting 6 elements. Because screenshots don't do them justice, we will be releasing a mini trailer here soon. If you're going to GDC this year, hopefully you will run into the owner of the company that backed us! Mr Akeem Adams! This is just a small bit of what has been changed so far. Got some new features in!

There is now a pet system in the game. You acquire your pet half way through the game, and it fights along side you. I won't give away any spoilers, but it plays into the game nicely! Floating combat text has been added in, as well as crits. The higher your element level is, the higher your crit chance is. We just got the new artists hired, and they are working hard on the new art. Mr Clement Swennes, and Thomas Feichtmeir are some amazing artists. I suggest you guys go check out some of their work. I'm really happy to be working with such talented people. I swear Tim's musical ability gets better each time he sends me a new demo.

Hud is getting a makeover. Survivor save/kill is moving to the inventory screen only, and the attack buttons are down at the bottom. The game now shows scrolling combat text for damage. Added in critical hits.
