I'm getting so sick of major female characters in historical media being incredibly feisty, outspoken and public defenders of women's rights with little to no realistic repercussions. Yes it feels like pandering, yes it's unrealistic and takes me out of the story, yes the dialogue almost always rings false - but beyond all that I think it does such a disservice to the women who lived during those periods. I'm not embarrassed of the women in history who didn't use every chance they had to Stick It To The Man. I'm not ashamed of women who were resigned to or enjoyed their lot in life. They weren't letting the side down by not having and representing modern gender ideals. It says a lot about how you view average ordinary women if the idea of one of your main characters behaving like one makes them seem lame and uninteresting to you.
It also almost always comes down to poor research.
Rather than research the ways subversive women really acted, what they really said, what they actually cared about, the very specific ways in which women used to be treated, dismissed, infantilised etc, we get books and TV shows in which modern words, modern concerns and modern ways of being “a strong woman” are awkwardly squeezed into eras in which they make no sense.
It’s a disservice to the real feminists of that time, to the real women who lived and survived in a system of continuous misogynistic oppression, and the real journey we have travelled to get to where we are, and the long long way we still have to go. Worse, it feeds into the ignorance that breeds that complacency which then leads to a lot of the gains we have made being taken away from us.
I know rooster teeth had a whole fucking host of problems and haven't watched their stuff in years but I still shed a tear for another day another internet group getting bought out by big media companies because "they're successful" and then being shut down because they don't make enough profit for wall street. let things stay small. not everything needs to be contract deals and billboards the beauty of the internet should be that there's thousands of little things for people to find the niche they like, not that anything that becomes popular is obviously the next big franchise and we need to throw millions of dollars at it. We live in an era where big companies are taking everything small from us. Heardle getting bought out by Spotify and then shut down bc they realized it cost more than it made. capitalism and the Internet are not built for each other.
Forget unrequited love, you know what's really tragic? requited love but they're doomed by the narrative. It doesn't matter that they love each other, it doesn't matter how hard they love, they were doomed from the start.

Any educator who doesn't feel this on a visceral level has never had to experience the psychic pain of reading the phrase "Unused York City."
A lecturer at Middlesex University in 2014, Chris Sadler, coined the term "Rogetism" for these. Perhaps the best:
I'm trying to hide my plagiarism but the clapping of my sinister buttocks keeps alerting the lecturer
i think if yanks can't even recognise that the only reason they find farenheit intuitive is because they were raised with it, there's basically no chance of being able to get them to analyse all the other, more important implicit biases they've been raised with
like farenheit should be the kind of thing you lead with, you reference it to go 'well, see, your view on the world has been shaped by the society you grew up in, and that leads you to make post-hoc justifications for things that are entirely down to your environment' when dealing with other things. but we literally can't get past the thing that should act as the easy simple analogy for the actual hard-to-deprogram stuff
Europeans mad someone else does something differently than them, more at 11
yanks are also fundamentally incapable of thinking of people who don't live in the west as human beings capable of using the internet, so they just assume that any of the handful of people who aren't from the USA must be from the one other White place on earth. sad!
ooh actually yk what, after seeing this happen several times I don't think that's how they're thinking, I think it's actually worse. It comes off like they cannot believe eastern/global south nations people would ever become uppity enough to criticise them. it feels like they presume us so downtrodden far below them that when we speak up even the slightest bit on the smallest issue they have to assume it must be a European because surely those people from those poor countries wouldn't dare, right? And if not that at the very least utilising the same logic as "if I say something derogatory about women but preface it with white it's not misogyny anymore" to shut down any criticism by painting their critics as white, European, implicitly privileged, thereby erasing eastern nations' people completely to their ends

Innocent children cannot be allowed to know homosexuality exists but they can die working without safety equipment on a roof. (In case you think I'm exaggerating: )

the fact that we only have “herculean task” and “sisyphean task” feels so limiting. so here’s a few more tasks for your repertoire
- icarian task: when you have a task you know you’re going to fail at anyways, so why not have some fun with it before it all comes crashing down
- cassandrean task: when you have to deal with people you KNOW won’t listen to you, despite having accurate information, and having to watch them fumble about when you told them the solution from the start (most often witnessed in customer service)
feel free to chime in i ran out of ideas much faster than i anticipated
Promethean task: opposite of a Cassandraean task. You have the right information, and SOMEONE has to share it. But it's all in the delivery and if you're the person to identify the problem you WILL be hated forever.
Oedipal Task: (1) Attempting to avoid an unspeakably awful outcome and in doing so creating the circumstances that will bring it about. (2) Trying to solve an problem and discovering that you are in fact the problem you are trying to solve.
Odyssean task: you’ll complete it but it’ll take 20 times longer than it should and involve multiple side quests and mini-adventures
Pandorean task: some people fucked around and now it's your job to make sure they find out
Orphesian Task: a task that seems simple but is designed to be impossible for the one tasked with it
Dionysian Task: the plot of any stoner movie about trying to piece together what happened last night

Nine and Donna would have the sassiest adventures, roast all the villains and slay everywhere across time and space. Bonus points if they were actually allowed to swear.

genuinely one of the worst things that’s happened to television in the last few years (exacerbated by streaming services) is death of Filler. going from 20 episodes to 8 because “we didn’t really need that episode where the main characters went to the beach right? it had no long lasting effect” but we DID!!! we needed to see how they act without the Big Bad Plot and to establish the dynamics between the characters and lay in the sun (do they forget sunscreen? how do they react to a thieving seagull? do they get buried in the sand or do they do the burying?). the plot isn’t everything. the action doesn’t hit as hard without the quiet moments. give us character development and our little scenes back
no offence but the reason tumblr is “dying” is, well, yes, of course the cursed like/reblog ratio and the change in user behaviour (because of people being used to how instagram and tiktok work) BUT also the lack of weekly shows. i say it with my whole chest, they don't produce captivating and engaging stupid weekly tv shows anymore because streaming killed that so you have spikes of activity here when Something happens in general fandom or up to three days after a new season of whatever drops and then it's a wasteland. this is obviously an old woman yelling at a cloud missing supernatural and the vampire diaries and pretty little liars and all these other shows type of post but honestly give me back weekly tv shows where i have something to watch for 40 minutes almost every day of the week after work so then i can read and reblog it on tumblr give it back for the sake of my sanity
forever rooting for sensitive girls!!!!!! you have big hearts and a poet’s soul i love you
