I don’t believe it. Thanks, I hate it.

Okay, here’s what the headline doesn’t tell you:

  • It was made by a single industrial design student as a project.
  • It’s mainly intended to provide a larger scale demonstration of how bees pollinate because actual bees are tiny and you can’t see what’s going on when they do it. It’s primarily an educational tool.

But aside that, if you ever wonder why scientists work on all these little patch solutions for large, systemic problems, its because the people doing science research are not the people deciding how national and international policy is made.

Every time a scientist talks about how they’re working on something like de-extinction projects or artificial albedo creation there’s the inevitable sneering about how “we should just not let the animals go extinct in the first place” or “we should cut back on carbon emissions” as if those were not decisions being made by governments and oligarchs.

An industrial design student’s authority in his society stops at “make a cute robot”.

And also, this is your daily reminder that “headlines are lies designed to make you mad and/or get you to read the article.”

I want Astarion hurt/comfort when he’s not remotely attractive. He’s dirty and gross, there’s something matted in his hair and he doesn’t even want to imagine what it is. He’s sick, he’s coughing up something disgusting and his voice sounds terrible, or he had some bad blood and now he’s got a very upset tummy in the most unpleasant way. He’s injured, really injured in ways that hurt to even look at, and he’s in too much pain to even try to be charming. He’s never looked less sexy, at least in front of Tav who wasn’t around for the rat eating era.

And guess what? He still gets love and care. He still gets treated tenderly even when he isn’t something pretty to look at. Like maybe that’s not the only thing of value about him.

when i was a kid i used to respond to the "glass half full/half empty" question by asking how the liquid in the glass got there in the first place. nobody ever gave me a chance to explain my reasoning so i'm doing it now

if you have a glass and it has some liquid in it, up to the halfway line, whether it is empty or full depends on what happened before the question was asked. if you started with a full glass and poured half out until only half remained, the glass is half empty, because if you continued pouring it would be fully empty. however, if you started with an empty glass and poured liquid from another container into the glass up to the halfway line, the glass is half full because if you continued pouring it would be all the way full. logical, no?

i was 13 years old when somebody finally told me it was supposed to be some kind of optimism/pessimism thing. i always thought it was a riddle that nobody let me solve

Okay but that actually goes really well with the metaphor. How did you get to where you are right now? Have things gotten better or worse? Does it seem like the trend is continuing?

Nobody's really an optimist or pessimist all the time, your outlook depends on the situation and how you arrived there.
