That’s right, we are back on Tumblr!!!

Seven years ago, our Tumblr account was shut down.  We knew we hadn’t violated any rules so we never gave up.  We’ve written to Tumblr a bunch of times since then trying to get reinstated but it never worked, and we never got an explanation.  Yesterday, we got an email that this was all an error and we are reinstated! Frankly, we don't care about why or what happened.  Mistakes happen. It’s water under the bridge.  We are simply thrilled to be back!  Tumblr is an awesome place to share cool stuff and connect.

Since we’ve been gone, SMG has created thousands of podcasts, live events, videos, and even published a book.  We have 120+ podcast titles alone, which adds up to a ton of awesome content we can’t wait to share.  The bottom line is, we love you all and love to be back!!!!

Anarky (Lonnie Machin)

Anarky

(Lonnie Machin)

Did you know that last week’s Arrow villain Anarky has been around in comics for 24 years? And that he’s a Batman villain mostly (He has had a few run ins with Green Arrow).  Lonnie Machin, the child prodigy, student of philosophy who attempts to overthrow all authoritative bodies, first appeared in Detective Comics #608 (November 1989).

Anarky was the creation of Writer Alan Grant and artist Norm Breyfogle.  The character was a response to some of Grant’s political views.  In his first appearance, Lonnie is a 12 year old boy who disguises himself to undertake his life’s mission. Grant described Lonnie Machin as "a serious-beyond-his-years teenager who wants to set the world to rights.”  While this sounded positive, Lonnie as Anarky set out to complete his goals in negative ways, attacking those he deemed “evil” such as the factory owner who dumped toxic waste.  With his mission and disguised appearance, Batman did not know he was battling a child until he caught Anarky.

Lonnie was next revealed to be siphoning millions of dollars from big corporations to give to third world countries.  Lonnie did this from his room at juvenile hall under the alias of “Moneyspider” until he was discovered and stopped by Tim Drake (Robin #3) in Detective Comics #620.

After several more battles against Batman & Robin Anarky got his own miniseries in May of 1997.  While hesitant at first to undertake the project, Grant proceed with encouragement from Breyfogle.

While a critical and monetary success, a 2nd ongoing series was nowhere near as successful.  Grant had had doubts both times, quoted as saying "Anarky, not having any super powers, doesn't have what it takes to bring the fans in month after month. He's the sort of character you can get away with using in an annual once a year plus his own miniseries once a year and maybe as a guest star every couple of years, but he's not capable, he's not strong enough to hold his own monthly title. Very few characters are when it comes down to it.”

After the series was cancelled Anarky went into limbo for a few years.  He next appeared in 2005 in Green Arrow #51.

This was the character’s only appearance until he reappeared in the Robin series in issue #181.

A more violent and aggressive Anarky was revealed to be another Bat villain, Ulysses Armstrong, the General.  Lonnie Machin was a hostage of Armstrong, paralyzed and living in an iron lung.

Lonnie later returned to his Moneyspider identity as a computer hacker, able to access the internet even from his iron lung.

After DC Comics’ New 52 reboot of all it’s books, there have been only been two quick appearances of two different versions of Anarky.

The first appeared in Green Lantern Corps #25. In this story Anarky’s identity is never revealed, only that he was an african-american male.

The second appeared in a story arc of Detective Comics.  Here Anarky was a corrupt politician named Sam Young who used the identity to gain revenge on the Mad Hatter for murdering his sister.

A version of the character recently appeared on Arrow, portrayed by actor Alexander Calvert.

What’s your favorite version of the character?  Contact me and I’ll tally the results.

Cassandra Cain (Batgirl or Black Bat)

Cassandra Cain

(Batgirl or Black Bat)

by Phil Perich for the Before the Bat Podcast

Cassandra Cain has returned in the pages of Batman & Robin Eternal. For those of you who don't know Cassandra (or Cassie as her friends sometimes call her), she was Barbara Gordon’s successor as Batgirl.  Cassandra’s birth was the result of a diabolical master plan.  The assassin David Cain decides to “create” the ultimate assassin.  He hires the deadly Lady Shiva to have his baby and then leave the baby in his care.  From the moment of Cassandra’s birth, David teaches her several deadly martial arts, including how to read any opponents body language, which she was able to do at the cost of being able to speak any spoken language.  David has her kill a businessman when she is only eight years old.  Cassandra eventually becomes disgusted with the life David wants her to live and leaves.  Years later, the mute teenager turns up in Gotham City during the No Man’s Land crisis, in which most of the city has been devastated by a 7.6 earthquake. Her first appearance was in Batman #567 (July 1999).

She is originally an agent of Oracle’s, but after an encounter with her father and saving lives (which proves she has abandoned her father’s way of life), Batman and Oracle (the original Batgirl) decide to give Cassandra the costume and identity of Batgirl in Legends of the Dark Knight #120 (August 1999).

The year 2000 saw Cassandra receive her own solo Batgirl series. This was a first for any version of Batgirl.  She patrolled Gotham and kept it safe on her own and often with Batman or one of his other allies.  After the events of the War Games storyline, Cassandra teams up with Robin (Tim Drake) to protect the city of Bludhaven.  After an apparent fight to the death against her mother, Lady Shiva, Cassandra abandons the role of Batgirl and wanders the world.  After the start of the “One Year Later” storyline, Cassandra is seen working with the League of Assassins and Deathstroke’s Titans East team.  It is later revealed that Deathstroke was drugging and brainwashing her to work with the assorted villainous teams.  In 2008, at Batman’s request, she retakes the mantle of Batgirl to join his newest version of the Outsiders team.

After Batman’s disappearance and supposed “death” in the Batman R.I.P. storyline, Cassandra decides to take charge of the Outsiders, believing that was the reason Batman asked her to join the team, as a contingency plan for his death.  In 2009’s Batgirl #1, Cassandra abandons the identity of Batgirl which allows Stephanie Brown to assume the role.

Upon Bruce Wayne’s return, it is revealed Cassandra was acting on his orders to “give” the Batgirl identity to Stephanie in the event of his death and to assume a new identity, Black Bat.

Cassandra continued to operate in this new identity, even as part of Batman Incorporated until DC Comics’ 2011 Company-wide reboot of its books.

After DC Comics’ New 52 storyline, Cassandra did not appear (except for one story set in a possible future in Batgirl: Futures End #1) until 2 weeks ago, in Batman and Robin Eternal #1.

What role will Cassandra play in this new universe?  Friend or foe?  Share your thoughts with me:

Genis-Vell (The Next Captain Marvel)

Genis-Vell

(The Next Captain Marvel)

by Phil Perich for the Nuff Said Universe

With hints of rumors about a favorite character of mine from the 1990’s and 2000’s maybe appearing in Guardians of the Galaxy 2, I thought I would once again write about another Marvel character I loved to read and was sad to never see again.

Genis-Vell, or Legacy as he was known in his early appearances, first appeared in Silver Surfer Annual #6 (1993).

in this issue, it was revealed that Legacy was the son of the original Captain Marvel (Mar-Vell) and Elysius of Titan even though he was born years after Mar-Vell’s death.  Elysius used the advanced technology of her race to impregnate herself with some of Mar-Vell’s DNA so that something of the legendary Kree warrior would live on.  Due to artificially implanted memories, he originally thought his father was the alien hero Starfox, but he later discovered the truth about his real father.  Legacy would get his own series, titled Captain Marvel, in December 1995. The series that featured Legacy’s journey to discover more about his father and how to be a hero lasted only six issues.

Years later in the Avengers Forever miniseries, the superhero sidekick Rick Jones, who had been bonded with the original Captain Marvel, meets a future version of Legacy, now using his father’s codename of Captain Marvel.  The end of the story sees a temporal anomaly bond Rick to the present day Legacy, triggering Legacy’s latent cosmic awareness, which he is unable to turn off for awhile like his father was able to.

Genis’s next Captain Marvel series premiered in March 1999, featuring his journey to become the new Captain Marvel while dealing with life bonded to Rick Jones.  While Rick and Mar-Vell would swap physical space between Earth and the Negative Zone, With Genis the swap was between Earth and the Microverse.  Also making life difficult for both of them was the fact that they always saw the other guy in reflective surfaces and were always aware what the other was doing, which made romantic moments with Rick’s wife Marlo awkward to say the least.

This series ended at issue #35 in October 2002.  In an attempt to boost sales on some books, Marvel started the U-Decide campaign and as a result Genis got a new Captain Marvel series staring with a new #1.  After his cosmic awareness drives him insane, Genis strands Rick in the Microverse, gets a new uniform from a Kree soldier he kills, and destroys the universe at the suggestion of cosmic beings Entropy and Epiphany.

Genis recreates the universe with several different changes, such as he now as an adult sister, Phyla-Vell. No one else remembers his destruction of the universe or that anything had changed.  Genis later travels to the future where he meets his son who has not been born yet in the present. His son plans to trigger a universal extinction event. Genis defeats him by deciding that he will kill his son as an infant after he is born. This causes his son to vanish into nothingness.  This Captain Marvel series ended with issue #25 in 2004. The last issue sees writer Peter David wrap up all loose story threads, such as reuniting Rick Jones with his wife Marlo, and separating Genis and Rick so they no longer have to share physical space.

Genis would next appear in issue #82 of the Thunderbolts series (May 2005).  At this point, Genis has absorbed his nega-bands, which give him his powers of flight, energy manipulation, and strength enhancement into his body.  After he is injured, the Thunderbolts leader Baron Zemo heals him with the alien moonstones.  Genis then takes on another new costume and name, this time using the codename Photon.  Zemo later realizes that using the moonstones on Genis has created a link between Genis and the universethat threatens to end it.  Genis attempts in vain to use his cosmic awareness to find a solution.  In Thunderbolts #100, Zemo battles Genis in a fight to the death to save the universe. Zemo traps Genis in a moment in time. He then uses a combination of the Darkforce powers and the moonstones to separate Genis into individual pieces, trapping them in separate, far-off parts of the Darkforce Dimension so that they cannot be reunited.

So was the end of Genis-Vell.  Will he show up in Guardians of the Galaxy 2? Who will he be since we are getting Carol Danvers as Captain Marvel in her own movie?  Share your thoughts with me!
