I started rewatching Inuyasha and I don’t really know why BUT DANG. so much nostalgia. this is super self-indulgent but my 14-year-old self is very happy.

Perhaps it’s my age speaking, but I’m starting to miss the way fandom used to be fifteen years ago. Mostly since back then the concepts of ‘darkfic’ and ‘don’t like, don’t read’ were properly understood and adhered to (usually). The situation with darkfics was interesting in particular, because the entire premise was that the author could write incredibly fucked-up things, with the understanding on their part that shit was indeed very messed-up and with no pretense to the contrary (what usually gets termed ‘romanticization’ these days).

Now? You’ve got to run an entire rigmarole of explaining the difference between romanticization and just straight-up exploring a horrible dynamic in writing as, you know, a writer. And even after that, you’ll probably have to deal with the whole invasive ‘explain every trauma you might’ve gone through, so strangers who otherwise don’t care if you exist can decide if they give you Permission to use writing as a coping mechanism’ mess. Fucking hell.

I’ve said it before. Learn to tell the difference between fantasy and reality. Learn to tell the difference between what someone explores on the page as a writer and what that same person believes and advocates in their day-to-day life.

Truth.

Hey guys, remember squickfics? I remember squickfics.

all too well

Is it too soon to share another awesomely creative piece of furniture? No way! This one-of-a-kind insectoid armoire is called the BUG and it was designed Latvian designer Janis Straupe of True Latvia. Full of customizable shelves, drawers, cubbies and even a few secret compartments, it’s a beautifully functional piece of furniture as well as an amazing work of art.

If only Kafka could’ve see this…

  • Work to open up dialog and support more.
  • If you don’t agree with something, instead of yelling at the top of your lungs in ALLCAPS about how bad this thing is, ask what got the creator so interested in the thing and what their thoughts are on it.
  • If they say its personal, leave it the fuck alone.
  • Try to leave kind comments on any fic you read, any at all if your device doesn’t make that a pain (my phone does, so i feel)
  • Create more self-indulgent media! Write a fic about nothing, draw your self insert OC kissing the main antagonist, write a fic where some side character you think looks cool gets like seven girlfriends.
  • Especially for fic writers, you do not have to have an over-reaching point. Its amazing when people write in depth fic about serious issues, and it really adds to fandom culture. However, this is taxing to most people and if its “not done right” or if you miss an issue, it gets either no feedback or a lot of negative feedback, and even writing it takes a lot of work. fandom is also supposed to be fun.
  • Stop trying to censor creators. This not only hurts those creators but it hurts people who would otherwise be able to use that media as escapism, coping, etc. If its not available, then how can someone know it helps them?
  • Continue to use tags and warning labels correctly, and then HEED those warnings. Block content that seriously upsets you.
  • Bring back “squick” as a term for less than a trigger but still unpleasant and disconcerting.
  • If there is a specific type of content you’d like to see, instead of dissing already existing stuff to guilt people into doing what you want, start creating it yourself! It doesn’t have to be big, in fact it can be as simple as just talking about it and tagging it where it will be seen.

Feel free to add to this post, make another post (and tag it #FixFandom2016), or simply talk about it. The goal is to make the general fandom atmosphere more welcoming and conducive to creation and enjoyment.

  • Encourage others who are trying to learn how to draw different things! Like body types/hair/backgrounds/etc. Don’t shame them for getting something wrong! cuz 9 times out of 10, it’s out of ignorance! not someone who wants to be offensive on purpose!

So I agree with all this, and I want to add - I know things were necessarily ‘better’ in Ye Olde Days of fandom, or whatever. I know we have these conversations of how to treat one another again and again. But we have to have them, because there are always new people who like to go on moralistic crusades based on their halfassed guesses of what hurts vulnerable people, and they have such shoddy ethical frameworks that they think harassment and suicide baiting is an appropriate response to art and writing that makes them feel icky. They sweep other people up into their strong feelings and turn them into a mob, and then you get things like the absolute shitshow of harassment that happened to zamii070.

Fiction - visual and written - is important. Fiction allows us to explore dark places in a safe away, for whatever reason we want or need to explore those dark places, and in that exploration helps us shine light into the dark corners of real life. Fiction helps us to be happy, functioning human beings.

It’s important that we push back against people who are trying to take fiction away from us, using their poor understanding of pop psychiatry and icky feelings as reasons. A sensible set of guidelines for reasonable and kind behavior to other fans will help us shine light on what they’re doing and strip them of their excuses.

It won’t last forever, but if we can make things better now, for a while, and teach some people how to be resilient and kind, that’s that much better things will be in the future. That may even be some lives saved.

as a csa survivor who was abused by a stepparent, that post about 'please go back to being the person i cared about and not my rapist' fucking. it hit hard, man. it made me break down and cry for a while, and... thank you. thank you for understanding how this shit works, because i needed to cry over it, and realize it was a thing to cry over, and tumblr's sanitized survivor narrative never gave me that chance. remembering the person who (you thought) cared about you is one of the worst parts.

Crying is good sometimes, we all need a cry every now and again. Thank you for telling me this. I'm sorry for what happened, and I'm sorry if you weren't gunning for a cry today, but I'm glad what I said could resonate in a way that you needed.
