Daniel Luther’s Magical Watercolor Birds

Piercing eyes, faded pastel-hued bodies, vivid and bright patterned wings poised to fly off the paper - Daniel Luther’s watercolor birds create a delight for the eyes of to wander on. The Swedish art director, graphic designer and artist brings his love for watercolor to this series of artwork. It is immediately apparent that Luther’s brushstrokes are dominated by for his passion for the swirl of subtle and acute colors and not by precision.

Most of the birds in his featured artwork focus on owls, eagles, and other birds of prey. The sharp edges of the birds’ contour filled in with the watercolor displays Luther’s unique smudged coloring technique while cleverly drawing attention to the face of each bird. Whether the artist chooses a smooth and free flowing or defined style of drawing, the intensity of the eyesis replicated with perfection which only the living specimen is capable of imitating in every painting.

Daniel Luther’s liberty with his color selection is spectacular. Vying away from the usual natural tones for feathers, his pleasant combination of radiant colors mixed in with sober shades leave you with a sense of magic, while his flock drifts away from the edge of the canvas.

My master falconer friend recommended maybe trying the following:  dho gazha, Swedish goshawk trap, or a live pigeon.  Good luck!

It’s actually impossible to measure how many fucks a corvid give because there is no device sensitive enough to register such a tiny amount.

Tail Pulling is a behavior noted in many corvids. The practical application is to create a distraction that will allow the birb to make off with the target’s food. Imagine being in the lunch room and a large fellow has a Twinkie you covet. You can’t just take it from him because he’ll defend his Twinkie. But if you thwap him on the back of his neck and then dash around to snag the Twinkie while he investigates, you stand a decent chance of enjoying spongey goodness. This is basically that in birb form.

Except corvids don’t only do this as a distraction. Sometimes they seem to just being doing it to mess with other animals/birbs. But to use my lunch room analogy, there are times you might thwap someone sneakily on the back of the neck just for amusement. Primates exhibit behavior that appears to be just be annoying other animals for amusement. Given how intelligent crows are, its not unlikely that this is a manifestation of an innate desire to just fuck with someone else for the fun of it. Such as this from the link above:

THANK YOU FOR THE BIRB KNOWLEDGE

i. You always speak in an air-conditioned hum, a wasp sting whisper. You curl down my thighs, wrapping poison ivy deep into the backs of my knees. You look tired July, even though every morning you wake up later, and fall into bed before the sun sets late behind your closed blinds. ii. Your trees are bent with heavy simmering leaves, dripping perspiration onto smoking black top. Your fields are tripping over ripe fruit, bleeding berries and melting fruit, sweet like a sickness, sweet like the pink of your sunburned heels. iii. What do you need, July? It is bare shoulders and bleeding knees? Is it miles? Is it rain? Are you waiting for milk teeth to come falling out into dirty, screaming palms? Tell me what you need and I’ll bring it here. Down to this grainy, baked shore. Down to this spider bite refuge.

The Hawk Conservancy Trust is a conservation charity that works in the fields of conservation, rehabilitation, education and research of birds of prey. I spent a day there photographing a few of the birds that they have. My aim was to photograph the character of the bird and to get some movement into the portraits. I also wanted to illustrate the amazing structure and detail in these beautiful birds.

Today the Department of Phenomenal Papercraft is delighting in the awesomely lifelike bird sculptures made by London-based artist Zack Mclaughlin. He uses paper, wood and sometimes plastic resin, clay, and wire to create beautiful life-size models of birds ranging from tiny hummingbirds to large birds of prey.

“I have always loved creating things, be it a drawing, painting or 3d model making. My inspiration always comes from the natural world as I really do have a childlike sense of wonder and awe for everything that nature creates. As I have this fascination with nature I love trying to recreate it in my own way so I can take what magic there is home whilst leaving the true beauty out there to continue inspiring and growing. “

Mclaughlin turns some of his sculptures into dramatic light fixtures, such as this rook:

These one-of-a-kind paper and wood bird creations are absolutely breathtaking. Inspired by the beauty of nature and birds Zach says he “takes what magic there is home whilst leaving the true beauty out there to continue inspiring and growing.”
