Lost in Decontextualization

Been debating putting this up here, but I’ve been trying really hard to work out my feelings and thoughts about Orlando.  Dunno if this is going to come across as super rambly, but here we go.

Send not to know For whom the bell tolls It tolls for thee

Whenever I hear these words uttered in media – songs, movies, TV shows – it’s almost invariably done with a menacing air.  It’s certainly that – a grim reminder of impending death or hopelessness.  But that’s the case only that when the line is taken on its own.  Stripping the context from this ending piece of John Donne’s poem imbues it with a dread that doesn’t seem in line with what the poem is about when read in its entirety.

“Countless residents have seen him, but no one can seem to remember exactly what he looks like - just that he has a tan jacket and a deerskin suitcase, and he has been spotted all over town.”
