“John Lennon and Paul McCartney in particular were extremely good friends; they loved one another, really.
[…] You could, though, almost touch the rivalry between them, it was so intense and so real, despite this overriding warmth. No sooner would John come up with an outstanding song evoking, say, his own early childhood, like Strawberry Fields Forever, than Paul answered him straight back with a winner in the same vein: Penny Lane. It was typical of the way they worked as a song-writing duo.”

Bohemian Rhapsody was incredibly biphobic and homophobic. Freddie Mercury was bisexual, not gay, and the movie still chose to portray him like a confused gay man. The way that the plot was structured framed gayness as not only a choice, but a risky choice... a dangerous stereotype. While I understand that is accurate to portray Freddie’s friends and family misunderstanding his sexuality, the plot structure of the movie itself did not have to allow for subtle biphobic messages.
Early in the movie, we see Freddie using a payphone to call his wife Mary while he is on tour. As he talks to her, he is wistfully looking at a man walk into a bathroom. This scene set off my censors as it came across as portraying bisexuals as unfaithful and hyper-sexual. Additionally, in the scene where Freddie comes out to Mary as bisexual, Mary tells him that he’s gay and the scene ends shortly after; not at all allowing for the cruelness and inaccuracy of her statement to be felt.
I am frankly disappointed in how many bisexuals accepted this faulty narrative of a dead man’s legacy.
