Bay Watch: Marcella Arguello On @Midnight

@midnight, aka Joke Jeopardy, is my adulthood’s ultimate frisbee (or Ultimate if you’re “that person”). Looks like a lot of fun, I have the skill set to be good at it, I probably should—and secretly do—enjoy it but I get a smugness in my abstinence (even if my impulse is based in fear). After an initial fascination—and lifestyle that allied me to participate in the hashtag wars—the only way I’m moved to search out @midnight these days is to see someone with ties and allegiance to the SF Bay Area, as was the case last night with Supreme Ruler Marcella Arguello.

I call Marcella “Supreme Ruler” for thematic purposes, as a credit to their acumen as a comedian, an appreciation for their quality personhood, and with sincere hyperbole: I will mop up anybody, figuratively, metaphorically and physically, if Marcella Arguello decrees.
Opponents Wil “Crusher” Wheaton and Ross “Tertiary Walking Dead Character” Marquand were assumedly on the panel because they have been on television, are on television, have a platonic marriage with host Chris Hardwick, or some combination of the three. Marcella was asked to be on the show for the most vindicating and exemplary reason for someone who wants to succeed mainly on the merits of their stand-up: Hardwick saw Marcella crush it doing stand-up and asked her to be on the show. It pays to be great, folks.
Firing on all cylinders from the jump with a well received Cosby cosmonaut joke, the Modesto native (performing there March 18th @ Prospect Theater) brought a richness and steaze often missing from the show’s milquetoast line-ups. There was teeth, freshness, bravado. From #BadJobIn5Words like “Fetty Wap’s Personal Eye Doctor” to reacting to Hardwick/Wheaton’s nergasm bromance with, “My pussy has never been drier,” the 6'2" comedian stood literally and figuratively over the competition. It all culminated in a weird, but, totally Marcella, joke that turned a Bernie Sanders tattoo into a sassy, anthropomorphic, sex-positive potato, clinching victory, winning the Internet. Even in defeat Wheaton seemed enamored by Marcella’s glow. Welcome to the club, Crusher. ALL HAIL THE SUPREME RULER!

EJ: So you’ve been on the comedy grind for 9 years now. Can you describe the journey?
MC: It’s a tough one, it’s one of the few artistic avenues where you peak later in life. Musicians, actors, and painters can be deemed outstanding in their youth and it’s appropriately deserved, but with comedy it’s different, the best comedians are much more talented and interesting as they age and it’s wonderful.
