Salut! Hola! مرحبا! My name is Melissa; I'm a recent university graduate in love with languages, anime (especially Yu-Gi-Oh), coffee and tea, video games (especially Assassin's Creed), travel, but most of all BOOKS! Reciprocal constructions

“They love each other” “They are singing to one another” “each other” and “one another” are pronominal markers in English for a reciprocal construction.

Some languages, like Mayan and Otomi languages, Sango and Burmese, don’t mark these at all, requiring a full phrase to explain the reciprocity.

Some languages, like Cantonese, Malay, Sherpa, reduplicate the verb.

In many languages it’s the same as the reflexive.

In most European languages there’s a mixed type, same as reflexive and another optional pronominal marker as in Portuguese “eles amam-se” and “eles cantam um para o outro”.

Verb affixes occur widespread in Niger-Congo, Turkic, Afro-Asiatic, Pama-Nyungan language families. Most often is a suffix.

An adverb, like “mutually” is the norm in East Asian languages like Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Vietnamese, Khmer.

A particle is the rarer type, used in Navajo and some Australian languages.
