A message from a few of the trans staff at Tumblr & Automattic:

We want trans people, and LGBTQ+ people broadly, to feel welcome on Tumblr, in part because we as trans people at Tumblr and Automattic want it to be a space where we ourselves feel included. We want to feel like this is a platform that supports us and fights for our safety. Tumblr is made brighter and more vibrant by your presence, and the LGBTQ+ folks who help run it are fighting all the time for this, for you, internally.

A few days ago, Matt Mullenweg (the CEO of Automattic, Tumblr’s parent company) responded to a user’s ask about an account suspension in a way that negatively affected Tumblr’s LGBTQ+ community. We believe that Matt's response to this ask and his continued commentary has been unwarranted and harmful. Tumblr staff do not comment on moderation decisions as a matter of policy for a variety of reasons—including the privacy of those involved, and the practicalities of moderating thousands of reports a day. The downside of this policy is that it is very easy for rumors and incorrect information about actions taken by our Trust & Safety team to spread unchecked. Given this, we want to clarify a few different pieces of this situation:

  • The reality of predstrogen's suspension was not accurately conveyed, and made it seem like we were reaching for opportunities to ban trans feminine people on the platform. This is not the case. The example comment shared in the post linked above does not meet our definition of a realistic threat of violence, and was not the deciding factor in the account suspension.
  • Matt thereafter failed to recognize the harm to the community as a result of this suspension. Matt does not speak on behalf of the LGBTQ+ people who help run Tumblr or Automattic, and we were not consulted in the construction of a response to these events.
  • Last year, the "mature" and "sexual themes" community labels were erroneously applied to some users' posts. An outside team of contractors tasked with applying community labels to posts were responsible for this larger trend of mislabeling trans-related content. When our Trust & Safety team discovered this issue (thanks largely to reports from the community), we removed the contracted team’s ability to apply community labels and added more oversight to ensure it does not happen again. In the Staff post about this, LGBTQ+ staff pushed to be more transparent but were overruled by leadership. The termination of a contractor mentioned in the original ask response was for an unrelated incident which was incorrectly attributed to this case. We regret that the mislabeling ever happened, and the negative impact it has had on the trans community on Tumblr.
  • Transition timelines are not against our community guidelines, and weren’t a factor considered by the moderation team when discussing suspensions and subsequent appeals. We do not take action against content that is related to transitioning or trans bodies unless it includes violations of the Community Guidelines.
  • When it comes to the experience of trans folks on Tumblr encountering transphobic content, and interacting with bigoted users, we understand and share your frustrations. Tumblr’s policies, and Automattic’s policies, are written to ensure freedom of speech and expression. We prohibit harassment as defined in our Community Guidelines, but we know that this policy falls short of protecting users from the wider scope of harmful speech often used against LGBTQ+ and other marginalized people.
  • Going forward, Tumblr is taking the following actions:
  • Prioritizing anti-harassment features that will empower users to more effectively protect themselves from harassment.
  • Building more internal tooling for us as Staff to proactively identify and mitigate instances of harassment.
  • Reviewing which of the tags frequently used by the trans community are blocked, and working to make them available next week.

We’re sorry for how this all transpired, and we’re actively fighting to make our voices heard more and prevent something like this from happening again in the future. We know firsthand that having to deal with situations like this as a Tumblr user is difficult, particularly as a member of an already frequently targeted and harassed community. We know it will take time to regain your trust, and we’re going to put in the work to rebuild it.

We appreciate the space we have been given to express our concerns and dissent, and we are thankful that Matt’s (and Automattic’s) strong commitment to freedom of expression has facilitated it.

We will continue to fight to make Tumblr safe for us all.

This statement was authored by multiple trans employees of Tumblr and Automattic.

i think most of the negative commenters here have no idea how to read corpo-speak when the employees actually care but their bosses are making dumbass decisions. people are acting like the staff who wrote this are oppressors when they're literally saying they are having to fight internally to be heard by the people making decisions.

this basically says, "sorry our CEO is being a dipshit, we really don't like it and we were overruled on decisions that made things worse. now that he's blown this up we can finally do the things higher-ups didn't let us do earlier."

the note about being thankful for "matt's strong commitment to freedom of expression", i'm not sure how sincere it is, but it reads to me like "thanks for not firing us for making this post, and thanks for listening (or being strong-armed into listening) to us when we told you that you're fucking things up and you should let us fix it."

my heart goes out to y'all for dealing with this bullshit, both internally and externally, and i hope you get the changes that you want and deserve to make tumblr a better workplace and a better posting zone. a lot of ppl really don't understand how hard it is to be in a company whose work you believe in when leadership is doing things you disagree with and you have to thread the needle of communicating that while being professional (i.e. compliant with corporate communication guidelines).

Corpo speak professional here. I'm the lawyer that corpo consults when they want to make a corpo speak apology or do some PR management.

In all my career, I have never seen a corporation issue a public statement written by line employees like the post above on an official account. A corporation will always issue an apology or something like this from the highest level - the CEO itself or speaking on behalf of the corporation as a whole, written by their lawyers and/or PR team.

For Tumblr to allow and issue a statement written by employees speaking on behalf of themselves is incredibly rare and frankly shows tumblrs commitment to it's queer staff and users.

That in and of itself should make this be a positive sign

Let me add it here again: I have no idea if the interim CEO informed Matt or not about this post going out, but it was him (Toni Schneider, the interim CEO and Automattic's board of director member) who gave the folks who have written this post the thumbs up to be able to share their thoughts, not Matt Mullenweg.

Given how Matt was still fighting people on twitter barely 10 hours before this post went live, I suspect he either wasn't aware that it was going to be posted, or if he was, he was informed in a "this is going to happen, head's up" way in the last few hours and not asked for permission.

This feels like possibly the rest of the board has concluded that someone needs to sit on him.

Anonymous asked:

What is this about the tumblr staff wanting to sell art data to midjourney?

An ex-colleague of mine mentioned yesterday that there may be contacts between Automattic and midjourney in that direction, but nothing is public yet and I don't have any more info. They probably won't have anything specific to share either, since they left the company weeks ago too. That being said:

  • I have no reason to doubt my ex-coworker word, they are a trustworthy person.
  • Tumblr's CEO has been absurdly enthusiastic (comically, even) about AI, and is a big fan of LLMs and 'AI' companies.
  • A deal with midjourney could solve tumblr financial issues (not the same company, but openAi is paying up to 5 million/year to news companies to use their content as training data... tumblr generates several orders of magnitude more content than any newspaper or any media company and it only would need a 20 to 30 million per year deal to be profitable)

So I don't have any extra info yet, but I'm keeping my ears open.

Avatar

And I just got confirmation from a second ex-colleague that a deal with midjourney has been brewing since months ago. Not any extra details, just that's a real thing.

Shit, I don't see any way for this to happen that doesn't make it an apocalyptic event the size of the porn ban. Fuck.

Shit. This may be pure chance and coincidence, and it's not he is in a position to be able to talk about anything, but seeing prominent staff members announcing they are moving their original photography out of tumblr just two weeks ago seems a pretty significant cue of shit to be about to hit the fan.

Just tested. It’s possible to swap out pictures on already-published posts. So in that case, a solution:

Even if you don’t post your own art anymore, go back to your old stuff and watermark it.

Do it ASAP, before the deal goes through and the scraping begins.

This will not only protect your art, but has the opportunity to fuck over this deal on a pretty large scale. The more of these posts that are glazed or poisoned, the less valuable this deal becomes for tumblr and midjourney.

Share this with everyone. And i do mean everyone.

Pigeon wings under a UV light

"The secret invisible light we cannot directly perceive creates beautiful vaguely rune-like shaped on the religiously significant appendages of an otherwise mundane animal" yeah get out of here, tone down the fantasy vibes a little bit, that's too much. Oh wait that's reality? ... Well then.

unfortunately, this is MISINFORMATION

As others have said: this is a racing pigeon, and the markings are stamped by human hands. there appears to be hanzi characters in there

Its true that many birds have some incredible coloring that humans can’t see because they’re in the ultraviolet range! We miss out on some of the intricacies of plumage that appears dull to our eyes. But (1) if I understand correctly, it’s not like a UV light will make that plumage visible to us (it’s not invisible ink in colors we can see with the right light: it’s literally just out of our site range) & (2) this ain’t it, folks 🫠

These stamps are really cool-looking though!!

addendums: cult classic tv overlaps with early supernatural seasons somewhat, i am aware, just choose based on the cultural context in which you read your first fic.

for weeaboo crew i was thinking of examples like hetalia, black butler, soul eater, etc--popular anime absolutely included but the distinction is that people who were into dragon ball weren't necessarily going to anime club every week and making deviantart stamps about yaoi, but people into ouran high school host club ABSOLUTELY were.

homestuck is in its own category because homestuck changed fandom forever at a critical time which just happened to be when i was growing up in fandom. harry potter, lotr, star wars, and twilight are in their own categories because they were such multimedia juggernauts they had entire archives dedicated solely and only to their fic that spanned multiple franchise reboots (books -> movies -> extended universes). (i acknowledge star trek technically would fit under this but at the time culturally it had more overlap with other cult classic tv fandoms.)

honorable mentions that didn't make it to the list because i had to pick-and-choose with the 12 answer limit: the final fantasy franchise (axed because i am not familiar enough with the fic scene to know if it was as iconic of a gateway drug as, like, naruto or twilight or star wars fic), a general YA lit category (YA lit outside of twilight only went mainstream slightly after this time period), the MCU (i have a hate boner for the MCU), a broader "american superhero comics" category (this would be valid as an option but i don't have the space)

TOKYO BABYLON FST: BOX

what's poppin TyoBabi fandom, I got a present for you

.zip File Download: DISCS 1 & 2 (109MB)

This FST is basically an in-depth run down of the collection of songs that were sung/mentioned/in the "VOL. 7/BOX" chapter of Tokyo Babylon 5, with some info about the artists and songs themselves. This, as far as I know, is the most thorough run-through of the music of "BOX" on the English web! I've divided it into two "discs", the first being the songs mentioned themselves, and the second being a few fun related extras. You can check out the second disc over on Radio Free T.Y.O, if you're interested ♥

Ginza no Koi no Monogatari

銀座の恋の物語 - "Ginza Love Story" 石原裕次郎・牧村旬子 - Ishihara Yuujirou and Makimura Junko mp3 download || youtube

The song that Seishirou and Hokuto are pouring their very souls into to perform in the beginning of the chapter. Released in 1961, this a smoky, jazzy duet typical of its time, telling the story of two star-crossed lovers, one in Tokyo and one in Ginza. It was an immediate hit, even having a movie based upon it made, starring Ishihara-san in the lead role. It's a staple duet in karaoke even to this day.

Nakanaide

泣かないで - "Don't Cry" 舘ひろし - Tachi Hiroshi mp3 download || youtube

The song that the random selector spits up for Subaru to sing, which Sei-chan subsequently picks up after sending him off to buy cigarettes/exorcise the OL. This was released in 1984, by Tachi Hiroshi, a singer and actor who became quite the sensation when he had a starring role in 西部警察 (Seibu Keisatsu; "Western Police") -- incidentally, directed by the abovementioned Ishihara-san, as you'd have it. "Nakanaide" was a hit, coming in 59th on the ORICON's 1984 top singles list. It's from his seventh album In the Mood.

Nanpasen

難破船 - "Shipwreck" 中森明菜 - Nakamori Akina m4a download || youtube

The song that the OL ghost sings. A dark and heartfelt song about a dying love, it was a massive hit when it was released in 1987, shooting straight to the top of the ORICON charts (as Nakamori-san's 17th number one hit), and has been a karaoke regular since then, just as the OL says in the chapter. Originally written and performed by the very respected Kato Tokiko for her 最後のダンスパーティ (Saigo no Dance Party; "Last Dance Party") album of 1984; she personally requested that Nakamori-san perform the song. It's been covered countless times, including by the original singer/songwriter and the cover artist themselves.

Daite...

抱いて… - "Hold Me..." 松田聖子 - Matsuda Seiko mp3 download || youtube

Not actually sung, but the OL ghost suggests she'd like to sing it next. A dramatic and emotional slice of idol pop from the Eternal Idol herself, Matsuda Seiko (who also performs "Who's That Boy", found on Single White). Released in 1987 as a promo-only single from her fifteenth studio album, 1988's Citron. Despite never being released as an official single, it's one of Matsuda's more popular songs, especially karaoke-wise. It's rather interesting that the OL picks a Matsuda song directly after a Nakamori Akina track -- the pair were notorious rivals in the 80s, supposedly even in love.

Benkyo no Uta

勉强の歌 - "Study Song" 森高千里 - Moritaka Chisato mp3 download || youtube

The song Hokuto is singing when Subaru attempts to sneak back into the karaoke box. Released in 1991, it peaked at #4 on the ORICON charts, and was remixed on Moritaka's second remix album as ザ・勉強の歌 (Za・Benkyo no Uta; "The・Study Song"). It was used as the opening theme to the anime TV series "Mischievous Twins: The Tales of St. Clare's". It's a totally gimmicky song (complete with voguing in the very weird video clip), though cheerful and catchy, so its popularity on the karaoke circuit at the time shouldn't surprise anyone. (You just know that Hokuto unironically adored this song, and drove Subaru batty by singing it at every opportunity.)

Wakaretemo Suki na Hito

別れても好きな人 - "Beloved Even if We're Separated" ロス・インディオス&シルヴィア - Los Indios & Silvia mp3 download || youtube

The song that Hokuto announces Subaru should sing with Seishirou as punishment for being late. Another staple in the duets section of karaoke, still, this 1979 release was actually a cover. The song was released by two Toshiba EMI artists, Matsudaira Kemeko and the Purple Shadows, respectively, in 1969. In October 1975, Los Indios released a single-voice version, and in 1979 it was rearranged as a male and female duet, with some lyrics changed slightly. The song was an instant hit, and by 1980, it had sold a million copies.

For Indigenous People’s Day I’d also like to throw out my own tribe’s water project - it’s becoming increasingly vital as protections surrounding Navajo land get stripped away & reservations are stripped of sovereignty, as the US government has poisoned our water before and will likely do so again without a second thought. Please consider donating to the Navajo Water Project, or giving this a reblog if you’d like. A’he’ee, thank you!

Fanfolks today need to remember how important The Premise was.

Y'all have heard of The Premise, right?

See, historically there have always been people who saw an extra layer of gayness on certain pairs of fictional people (you just thought of several), and people Back Then even wrote their own fanfic (or as they were called at the time, "pastiches"), but the first widespread queer fanwork to really define the fanfiction genre was KIRK AND SPOCK. Kirk/Spock. K/S. The very first slashfics.

Why this work was vastly, overwhelmingly written by straight women is a discussion for another time, but it was, so that's the main perspective I'm gonna consider here.

How do you - a statistically middle-class, 30+, stay-at-home wife and mother - how do you write slashfic ao3-style in the 1960's before the internet?

Carefully.

Through letters with friends, phone calls, pen pals, and sometimes - sometimes - clandestine meetings of small groups. Whole novels were written communally, round-robin style, by sending typed or handwritten additions chapter by chapter to each other. These were all underground, some deep underground; even the early Trekkie fanzines of the time wouldn't touch them.

And keep in mind, few of these stories were explicitly even sexual! But they were all about a very, very close relationship between two men. In the 1960's.

Guess how cool everyone else was about this.

Actually, for their part, Gene Rodenberry and the other writers were fine with it, saying that they had deliberately written the characters to be two halves of a whole, and if you wanna read it that way, yeah sure, go right ahead. Shatner and Nimoy took it all in good humor, and seemingly still do, each guy basically gesturing to the other and chuckling "I mean, who wouldn't?"

But elsewhere there was vicious backlash against The Premise, and not just within the fandom. This was still at a time in the US and UK when various "sodomy" and "decency" laws made no distinction between homosexual sex acts and just, like, directly lighting another man's cigarette with your cigarette in public. (That, sadly, is not a fucking joke.)

It was probably the closest some suburban cishet women came to understanding the pain of being in the closet. They had to protect this secret from their friends and family at all cost. There were cases of divorces where women lost custody of their children because their writing had come to light.

Can you imagine having such a burning desire to write for your OTP that you were willing to lose everything over it? Even if you were never caught, you still had to be willing to wait weeks, months, to receive a letter in the mail that you had to carefully intercept, read in secret, and then add your own chapter t, also in secret, and then send off, perhaps never to be seen again.

These people were goddamn heroes, and they laid the foundation for the world we live in today. A world where we can read, write, comment on, or share - in a matter of seconds! - literature about two background characters from two different franchises enjoying a really specific kink involving vacuums or something. And that's objectively amazing.

Raise a toast to our fanfiction elders, who simped in the darkness so we could simp in the light of day.

Avatar
iliadette

This is important and should have more notes.

I’m ngl: how do we know these women were cishet?

Because I, a white queer trans man/acearoagender triple threat, may never have even known that I was queer or trans if I was an adult in the 1960’s. I would have probably been a housewife who had no idea why life felt *off* and unfulfilling, and possibly even resentful of the Black trans women leading the fight for free love without knowing why I felt that way.

many people in slash fandom today know that they’re some flavor of queer. But maybe most of those people would have lacked the language for who or what they were in a time before the internet made this information more easily accessible.

Basically: we can’t assume that housewives writing slash were straight and cis just because they were housewives It’s entirely possible they were closeted, quietly nonbinary, etc.

(Unless there’s information on this I’m not aware of documenting their orientations/gender identities? It’s possible/likely)

Our Community Guidelines are changing

To keep Tumblr the constructive, empowering place it should be

It was a little more than 10 years ago that we introduced the humble reblog, not knowing how much it would change the growing Tumblr community. The ability to take one person’s idea, build on it, and share it as something new transformed Tumblr from a simple blogging site into a social network where people were talking, exploring, learning, and growing through reblog chains.

We’ve been thinking about that a lot recently—the kind of place we want Tumblr to be, and our responsibility to you here and out in the world.

At its core, Tumblr is a place to express yourself and connect with others who share your interests. Over time a knot of diverse, kinetic, passionate communities sprang up. You can jump from things you love into things you didn’t even know existed. And it’s on all of us to create a safe, constructive, and empowering environment where you can continue to do that.

Our Community Guidelines need to reflect the reality of the internet and social media today and acknowledge that the things people post and share online influence the way others think and behave.

The following updates will go into effect on September 10, 2018 and can reviewed here.

We won’t tolerate hate speech

We believe in a free and open internet but we can’t ignore that the internet is being exploited by hate groups to organize, recruit, and radicalize with horrifying efficiency. Updating our Community Guidelines and internal procedures is necessary to address a very real threat to members of the Tumblr community.

When it comes to hate speech, we’re redrawing the line between what’s uncomfortable and what’s unacceptable, and have struck 41 words of gray area from this section in the Community Guidelines. It now reads:

Hate Speech: Don’t encourage violence or hatred. Don’t post content for the purpose of promoting or inciting the hatred of, or dehumanizing, individuals or groups based on race, ethnic or national origin, religion, gender, gender identity, age, veteran status, sexual orientation, disability or disease. If you encounter content that violates our hate speech policies, please report it.
[DELETED: If you encounter negative speech that doesn’t rise to the level of violence or threats of violence, we encourage you to dismantle negative speech through argument rather than censorship. That said, if you encounter anything especially heinous, tell us about it.]
Keep in mind that a post might be mean, tasteless, or offensive without necessarily encouraging violence or hatred. In cases like that, you can always block the person who made the post—or, if you’re up for it, you can express your concerns to them directly, or use Tumblr to speak up, challenge ideas, raise awareness or generate discussion and debate.

While the deleted language was well-intentioned (and we still need your help reporting hate speech) a post shouldn’t have to be “especially heinous” to merit reporting.

We’re also banning the glorification of violence and its perpetrators

Not all violence is motivated by racial or ethnic hatred, but the glorification of mass murders like Columbine, Sandy Hook, and Parkland could inspire copycat violence. With that in mind, we’re revising the Community Guidelines on violent content by adding new language to specifically ban the glorification of violent acts or the perpetrators of those acts:

Violent Content and Threats, Gore, Mutilation: Don’t post content that includes violent threats toward individuals or groups—this includes threats of theft, property damage, or financial harm. Don’t post violent content or gore just to be shocking. Don’t showcase the mutilation or torture of human beings, animals (including bestiality), or their remains. Don’t post content that encourages or incites violence, or glorifies acts of violence or the perpetrators.

Lastly, we’re eliminating any ambiguity in our zero-tolerance policy on non-consensual sexual images

We’re adding a very simple statement (in bold below) to our existing policy on harassment to remove any uncertainty:

Harassment. Don’t engage in targeted abuse or harassment. Don’t engage in the unwanted sexualization or sexual harassment of others.

Posting sexually explicit photos of people without their consent was never allowed on Tumblr, but with the invention of deepfakes and the proliferation of non-consensual creepshots, we are updating our Community Guidelines to more clearly address new technologies that can be used to humiliate and threaten other people.

So what can you expect going forward?

The new Community Guidelines will go into effect on September 10, 2018. After that, if we determine a post or blog is promoting hatred, glorifying violence, or is engaging in the unwanted sexualization of another person, it will be taken down. This includes (for example) posting Islamophobic, anti-Semitic, or anti-LGBTQ+ content to promote or incite violence or hatred; using symbols of hate movements to intimidate or harass others; and the glorification of mass murderers.

Of course, context is everything. Posts and blogs that generate open, constructive debate are always welcome here. A heated conversation about race or gender identity in media is not hate speech, nor is a factual, educational history of Jim Crow.

An overwhelming amount of care and nuance is needed to evaluate reports fairly and accurately, so we’ve increased the size of our team to review the reports we receive.

What should you do if you see content that violates the CGs?

Report it. We’ve added hate speech reporting to the mobile apps. Just tap the airplane icon on any post to open this menu 👇 — then tap Report (flag button) > Something else > Hate speech.

One last note

We are fierce defenders of free expression. We want Tumblr to be a place where people come to be themselves and engage diverse points of view through constructive dialogue. The lines we’re drawing today around hate speech, violence, and non-consensual sexual content are designed to protect that vision.

We’ll continue to review and revise our Community Guidelines to make sure they remain an accurate reflection of our community and its values. And as part of our commitment to transparency, we’ll always make sure previous versions are available on our public GitHub repo.

You’re going to have opinions on these changes and what more we can do. We encourage you to share your thoughts (especially constructive feedback) in the notes. And if you feel that Tumblr is no longer for you, there’s a whole world of internet out there.

❤️ Be kind to each other, Tumblr.

please promise that real people will look these things over? because otherwise it’s going to be just as abused as the previous language.

HELLO TUMBLRVERSE

Long time no see, hope you’ve all been well!

I don’t think it’s a secret that I haven’t been the most active on Tumblr for the past…while, but since I’ve been gearing up for some big changes at the beginning of this year, I figured it was about time I let y’all know what I’ve been up to!

Firstly, yes I’m still doing cosplay! The past couple years have been pretty slow, and I’m perpetually awful at updating my social media (something I’m trying to get better at), but if you’re still interested in following me for that, I highly recommend following me on Twitter (where I’m very active, plus all the multi-fandom exploits you’ve come to expect over here), Instagram (mostly cosplay-related or IRL posts), or Facebook (more professionally toned, mostly cosplay and streaming focused) – whichever of those social media outlets seems to suit your fancy. Probably not Facebook though, because as we all know the algorithms suck and you’ll never see anything.

Nextly, look at this shiny branding update! Logos! Imaging! Text coherency! It’s all there! Not a huge thing for myself perse, but it was a lot of work I put into prepping for the finally,

and probably most importantly –

If you saw streaming in there, that’s right, I’m launching my Twitch channel this Friday (or, uh, tomorrow!! haha)

I’ve been doing a lot of work to gear up for streaming on a semi-full time basis – I’ll be playing video games, chatting with viewers, and you might even catch me doing a cosplay WIP stream if you’re lucky! I’m super super excited to get this off the ground, and I’m really hoping to get to engage with people and share content in a way that’s more comfortable for me than words through the internet, so if any of that sounds interesting to you, click the follow button on my channel for notifications on when I go live. Not only would it mean a lot to have you tune in, I seriously want to see you there (yes, you!).

I’ll be doing a bit of a preliminary test stream tonight (playing Bastion from 6pm-9:30pm EST), and if you can’t tune in then, we’ll be kicking off the launch party tomorrow night at 6pm EST where you can watch me remember just why I never decided to finish playing Portal on PC. It’ll be fun! :D

And even if you can’t make it then, don’t worry – I’ll be trying to stream on the daily if I can manage it so feel free to pop in whenever you have a chance.

If you stuck out reading this whole post, thanks a bunch! I feel really fortunate to have gotten so many people following me on Tumblr over the years, and if you’d like to continue to support me on my other social media and especially with streaming, I’d super appreciate it. I’m hoping to use streaming as a spring-board towards bigger and better things, so even just a follow or whenever you can tune in would mean the world. <3

Thanks for everything, Tumblrverse! Good luck, and follow your dreams.  ☆ KnightArcana -  Al ☆

I heard that Portal is such a good throwback game that if you tune into KnightArcana‘s launch stream tonight at 6pm est you’ll actually portal back in time a whole week, saving you from KatsuCrunch

the ridiculous rumor that Spock caused ADHD

gtubahsbro replied to your post

What? “You were never taught how to focus as a baby”?? How do you even teach that to a baby?¿

STRAP YOURSELF IN BRO, WE’RE GOING TIME TRAVELING [IN AMERICA]

sooo after a bunch of civilization advancements (technology, food supply, modern medicine) started giving caretaker parents serious free time (1940′s-ish onwards), parents had the option to pamper their kids instead of scheduling nursing time for baby #12 between hand-washed laundry loads and making bread dough.

In the US, this meant a bunch of dudes took it on themselves to write books and make lots of money telling people to never neglect baby cries and never put kids in playpens and stuff

  • (the most famous one was Dr. Spock’s Baby and Child Care, 1st edition published in 1946 but new ones published like every decade the whole century)
  • people were like yeah!! that sounds like a great idea! and stopped putting their kids in playpens and scheduling nursing and whatever.

and then the civil unrest of the 1960′s and 70′s happened and everyone was like ‘OH MY GOD THIS IS BECAUSE WE NEVER PUT OUR BABIES IN PLAYPENS ISN’T IT’

but even though their parents were freaking out because they figured hippies were the result of free-range babies, baby boomers were like ‘this Dr. Spock guy is GREAT’ and in the 1980′s they also were all about Free Range Babies.

  • I mean, his name is DOCTOR SPOCK. dr. spock
  • are you not going to do what dr spock tells you to do????
  • so all these babies born in the 1980′s never went in playpens and were fed whenever they were hungry instead of scheduling mealtimes and whatever
  • and playpens are SO out of style that we don’t even call them that anymore and everybody is like ‘they probably fuck up your kid. they probably just fuck your kid up so bad’

ANYWAY

then in the 1990′s: BOOM. Suddenly all these kids born in the 80′s/in elementary school in the 90′s were getting diagnosed with adhd left and right! and it never stopped getting diagnosed a lot??? the percentage of kids diagnosed with adhd keeps going up (11-13% of kids in 2011)

  • aaaaaaaah whyyyyy— oh look an article that talks about why
  • (spoilers: starting in 1991 adhd got disability help, lots of publicity, standardized testing increased, cultural standards changed, etc)

but although Science™ had linked adhd with heredity and neurological function, not diet or parenting methods …

“excuse me, the explanation that Science™ gives for kids getting diagnosed with adhd does not satisfy me, a layman, and therefore I would like to seek an uninformed second opinion” - 90′s/00′s parents, probably

“did somebody say they wanted an UNINFORMED SECOND OPINION?” - 90′s/00′s media, probably

…. the idea that adhd is an uncontrollable inherited disorder is actually kinda scary. and if you think the stigma against mental illness and neurodiversity is bad now, man. you should have seen the 1980′s/1990′s. so even as people were getting their kids checked because they didn’t want their academic life to suffer and studies said adhd would make you a bad student for life without treatment, there was this lingering feeling that adhd was just some kind of excuse for being undisciplined.

and hey! people sure do love to tell other people what they’re doing wrong, especially if it will make them money.

so there’s plenty of people eager to write books and articles that explain that while they’re sure adhd is real …. probably………. you know, in some case study somewhere …………….  …. the large majority of ‘adhd’ people are totally normal - or would have been, if you hadn’t been a terrible parent(!!!):

combined with the fairly reasonable assumption that we’re overdiagnosing/overmedicating adhd in the US*, this sort of reporting leans hard on how people think mental health issues are just excuses, anyway.

“10,000% of the time adhd is a misdiagnosis. so maybe your kid does have adhd, but it’s way more likely that they just have a short attention span, can’t stand being bored, lack self-discipline, and don’t know how to organize because you fucked up your parenting so bad!

PS and even if they do have adhd their symptoms would be less bad if you were a better parent. you ass”  - an uninformed second opinion media piece, probably

so in conclusion: as late as 2012, something like 1 out of 3 people thought your adhd is just because your parents/guardians did a bad job raising you. they let you do whatever you want too much, didn’t pay enough attention, let you watch too much tv or play too many video games, never put you in a playpen, or something else. i don’t know. but it’s sure not neurodiversity or anything.

that’s what we get for listening to Spock about parenting.

(final but not necessary to read note under the cut!)

This is the most sarcastic thing I’ve ever written and honestly I still think I’m hilarious

Have you ever seen Titanic?

so fun fact: Titanic came out when I was a tween and lET ME TELL YOU. ABOUT HOW LITERALLY EVERONE WAS IN LOVE WITH LEONARDO DICAPRIO. that movie was entirely sponsored by young teens in hormones with Jack WhatsHisName.

I wasn’t allowed to see it because of the sex scene in the car but eventually i watched it at a house party I think

I believe that you played Karkat Vantas in a 2012 homestuck panel thing, and I would like to know if you are ever going to do that again.

I did! I played Karkat in ... 4 panels, I think, in 2012. (and I was every bit as arrogant and wanting to be the center of attention as Karkat ever was, lmao.)

anyway, no, I don’t expect to ever play Karkat in a character panel again. even if I had the opportunity I would have to catch up on an awful lot of Homestuck. I pretty much stopped reading after Karkat got Deaded by mind-controlled Jane and then brought back to life a panel later b/c when death is that cheap, what’s the point anymore?

Hi I was wondering if I could have some advice. I told my bf about rsd because everytime I argue with someone I start crying. I tried explaining it to him as "I feel like I need everyone's approval," but I don't think he really gets it. He asked why I feel that way and I didn't know how to respond. He says I can get over it if I try to by arguing with more people. However I feel terrified of this idea and I don't believe I can just get over this symptom that easily. What do you think?

so … honestly, no, I don’t think this is something you can ‘get over’.

this is just me theorizing, but I think the reason adhd people of certain personality types can really struggle with the idea that literally anyone hates them/is angry with them is because it’s hard for us to rank importance of feelings, just like it’s hard for us to prioritize/properly rank anything else. like:

say you accidentally cut somebody off while driving. the person zooms around you a little further down the road and yells curses at you out the window.

rational brain: there’s no reason to care what that person thinks. they’re over-reacting to a mistake. I should care more about what people who see me all the time think about me.adhd: bUT THE FEELINGS OF EVERYBODY IS EQUALLY IMPORTANT?? rational brain: that’s ridiculou–adhd: I might as well have killed the baby of my best friendrational brain: consider: accidentally cutting someone off in traffic is nothing like killing the baby of your best friend.adhd: TOO LATE ALREADY CRYING

because your adhd brain can’t tell the difference between level of offense, or what’s an overreaction because EVERYTHING IS EXCLAMATION POINT IMPORTANT!!!!!, or whose feelings should matter the most, it takes the feelings of everyone way too hard.

so even little things feel REALLY TERRIBLE!!! to us! and because this is due to chemical imbalances in the brain rather than untrained oversensitivity, you can’t just exposure therapy your way to not feeling that initial burst of emotional pain when somebody expresses a negative feeling towards you or something you did. That initial feeling will probably never stop happening.

However, you can teach yourself to better cope with that initial RSD emotional geyser. it’s hard, though, and take a lot of brain training. The best advice I’ve ever seen on the subject is from @wrangletangle: here’s a link to their description of how they walk off the sharp initial emotional reaction to perceived rejection. (I’m far from good at employing this myself, tbh.) It also helps to know that first reaction isn’t really my fault so I’m not sitting around like ‘what is wrong with me?’ when I feel super depressed at a person’s words.

for what it’s worth, I’m a person who absolutely loves to debate. I’ll talk about controversial subjects with other people all day long! and sometimes those debates get really heated. but the moment I get the impression it’s getting personal, I cave, crumble, and have to go cry my feelings off. And I’ve been like this for 25 years (that I can remember). RSD doesn’t go away, but if you can learn to categorize certain arguments into ‘this is not about me, this is about the issue’ it can go a long way to keeping your brain from taking it as a personal rejection.
