LOCAL NATIVES

On August 14th, 2021, we played one of the most special shows of our lives, one that we thought might be our last. After the longest break we’d had from playing live since we were teenagers, it meant so much to play a sold-out hometown show at the Greek Theater in LA.

There were so many mixed emotions that night, deep joy and sadness. We felt so much gratitude but there was a gnawing sense that our future together was unclear. When the world flipped upside down and we were completely isolated from each other, our bond as a band felt like it was coming apart. As individuals we were dealing with anxiety, depression, becoming first time parents and suffering through pregnancy losses.

That time alone brought long held tensions to the surface. Being in a band for 15 years, especially one as democratic as Local Natives with three singers and songwriters, where all five of us make decisions and collaborate creatively, is tricky to say the least.

When we started working on this record, it was a rocky take off (thank you John Congleton for being producer and unwitting therapist when we first started to make music together). What’s amazing about the album is that we can hear in it how we found our way back to each other in the songs. It took us loosening our grip on what Local Natives is to form a stronger connection to each other. It took surrender and love.

We’re so proud of this album and grateful it’s finally out in the world. There’s so little we have control of in life. Everything is constantly changing and sometimes it all just feels like chaos. But we can choose to hold on to the people we love and hurtle through the chaos together; to change together.

Time Will Wait For No One But I’ll Wait For You. This record is now yours as well, thank you for being on this journey with us.

Our fifth album Time Will Wait For No One is out July 7: https://i.localnatives.com/TWWFNO We’re so excited to finally announce the start of a massive musical journey we’ve been on in the last few years. Time Will Wait For No One was made during a time of metamorphosis for us. Former selves melting away as some of us became fathers, endured periods of isolation, loss, and identity crisis. The highs and lows we were feeling at the same time were so extreme. There was a moment halfway through making this record when we played one of the most emotional concerts of our lives, a sold out show at the Greek Theater in LA, and our first performance in almost two years. It was one of the most beautiful and connecting shows we’d ever played, and we didn't know if it would be our last. As individuals and as a band, we were on the verge of a collapse. Out of that reckoning we dissolved everything down to start again. In this period a theme was emerging in the songs we were writing, time flows on uncontrollably and change is relentless, and the people you love are the only constants. The following year led to the most prolific period of songwriting in our history. Local Natives can be a tricky solar system to keep in orbit, we have less defined roles than most bands, we’re hugely democratic, have multiple songwriters and singers. A few forces keep the balance going; our deep love and respect for each other as family, and that whenever we come together and let go of control we make something we could only make together. And the other is our community, listening to the records and going to the shows, you are part of our gravity. This is the first chapter, Time Will Wait For No One. 1. Time Will Wait For No One 2. Just Before The Morning 3. Empty Mansions 4. Desert Snow 5. Paper Lanterns 6. Featherweight 7. Hourglass 8. Ava 9. NYE 10. Paradise Recorded & produced with John Congleton @congletonjohn , Michael Harris @higherprotocol & Danny Reisch @gooddannys Art direction by @publiclibrary There are at least 10 variations of the album cover/packaging made with our friends at Public Library. The vinyl cover is a diecut with the photo being pulled out as an insert.

Hey y’all, Nik here. Long time no post!

I'm incredibly proud to share this song & music video I produced by Omotola, an amazing new artist, which proudly is released on my Chewing Inc. label. The music video was co-directed with Jonathan Chu who you might remember from directing our "Tap Dancer" video (as well as taking a million photos of us & us constantly tagging him on IG). The song was mixed by Brian Joseph who co-produced Sunlit Youth (as well as mixing incredible, beautiful albums like "Bon Iver, Bon Iver" or "Carrie & Lowell"). A true family affair.

LISTEN TO ALL OF SUNLIT YOUTH NOW at the Sunlit Youth Wall We have special memories of racing back from the record store to finally listen to a new album. Digging through the artwork, sometimes even painfully waiting days to listen to a new record in its entirety to make sure the first listen was uninterrupted. We're happy to finally share Sunlit Youth with you, tied with visuals from the album artwork created in collaboration with our art director Brian Roettinger, to give you that first album listening experience.
