She came home with a handful of these! The caramel creams were my favorite when I was a kid. Still love them, still my go to penny candy!

I will have to return the surprise now. For her it’s “sixlets”.

I still call this “penny candy” although a small bag of these are about $5!

Mortality

I had an uncle pass away a couple of weeks ago and of course the thoughts of my own mortality are consuming me. This uncle was just 2 years older than me and we grew up together. It was unexpected, and I had to make a couple trips back to WV. The funeral was weird, they played 4 country songs… he hated country music. I was asked to give a eulogy which I gladly did but it was difficult. I had many stories to share but they were all “inappropriate “! He was a wonderful man and everyone loved him but he would say some of-the most inappropriate things. It was hilarious once you got to know him. I will miss that crude humor.

While in WV we went to the neighborhoods where I grew up. When I was little boy I loved our home and the neighborhood where I freely roamed. Today it is unrecognizable! The homes are all in disrepair. Just horrible conditions. We then went to the mobile home park where we started our family. Again, just horrible conditions. After seeing these conditions, I think my daughter had a greater appreciation of her upbringing.

I will greatly miss my uncle, he was the last of the family on my mom’s side. My brother looked at me and said, “we’re on deck”. It’s a sobering thought, and very true. We are now the oldest in the family line.

Life is short, say all the things, do all the things…leave your mark!

“That’s the best part of my week!”

She said, after eating the egg sandwich that I just made for her.

Me: Really? Is your week THAT bad or is my sandwich THAT good?

Her: a little of both.

Me: it CAN’T be the best part of your week.

Her: I said what I said.

I need to make sure she has a better week! OR, fix her more egg sandwiches!!

Cooper’s Hawk

I’ve had plenty of hawks visit my backyard but this bird was different. It was a pretty bird. White belly, blue and gray wings, with gray stripes across the tail.

It was sitting on the back pad in a pile of feathers. In its talons was its unfortunate victim. A smaller bird that I no longer recognized. It was enjoying the meal as I was trying to get in position for a pic. I was in the house and barely pulled back a sheer curtain that spooked it and it quickly flew away with its prey.

Every time I’m visited by a rare bird I’m left wondering about the significance of the visit. If you are like me, everything means something.

I will now call this the “murder pad”. This is the 2nd time there has been bird murder on this pad. The 1st happened a couple years ago when a nest was raided and hatchlings were gruesomely tossed to their death.

A birds life is certainly perilous. Mother Nature is no joke.

The lavender I thought was a goner but it came back strong. Smells great.

Arugula, red leaf lettuce and Swiss chard looking good. Fresh salad tonight.

Potatoes in containers this year.

Iris looks good.

Feels good to get out in the yard today, planted lots more stuff.

Windy but sunny, I have Sturgill Simpson on the speaker box and she isn’t happy about that!

Not going to let it ruin my morning!

Easter angst

I’m feeling it and it’s only Saturday!

I have worked every Easter Sunday for the past 20 years. This year, I’m not working. I’ve been yelled out and threatened twice because I was in the kitchen. Time to find some space, outside, far away.

I swore that I wasn’t going to drink on Easter, but I’m about to change my mind and start today!

Anybody want to hire me for one day?!

Volunteer???

Now that I have more free time I thought I should do the noble thing and offer to volunteer my services to a local organization. I was under the naive impression that local organizations would gladly open their arms to any willing volunteer. Boy was I wrong!

Granted, many organizations either do not appeal to me or I’m not qualified for. When a local group sent out a plea for volunteers on the Facebook, I thought “this is it!”

I filled out the online forms and they replied a few days later with a specific list of what they wanted. Welp, I can’t do that but I CAN do this, this, and this….

They essentially responded with a thanks but no thanks!

So here I sit, can’t even work for free!

Watched / Watching (pt 3)

Watched

Ricky Stanicky -Prime. Yes this is a “buddy” movie but I liked it. John Cena is very funny.

Watched

The Gray Man - Netflix. I like Ryan Gosling but did not like this movie.

Watched

Poor Things - Hulu

I loved this movie, Emma Stone is outstanding. This movie is not for everyone. MrsMick would not watch!

Watching

Beef - Netflix. Nominated and won many awards and deservedly so. I’m about half way through this and I’m loving it.

The Gentlemen - Netflix. Just started watching and it looks good. It’s British, it’s Guy Ritchie, so it should be very good.

$1.14

That’s my reward…

My reward for being OLD!

Doing self check out at the grocery store when the associate comes over and tells me I need to go to the service desk. “What Did I do?”

I didn’t get here in time to get you your Senior Discount.

Those 2 words just crushed me!

I didn’t ask for a Senior Discount but it was obvious to her that I needed it.

I thanked her then got my $1.14 and shuffled out the door.

Potato time

I planted potatoes today. I had planned on getting them planted 2 days ago on St. Patrick’s day but I didn’t get to it. The old farmers always said to plant your potatoes on St. Patrick’s day.

Hey I’m an old farmer and I say plant your potatoes whenever you want.

ERA’S

Saturday night MrsMick and I watched Taylor Swift on Disney. Well, I cheated and started watching on Friday then she joined me after the Red Era.

I found it interesting that she was asking me about the era’s and about the songs. I also found it interesting that I was able to answer her questions!

It’s not that she is not a fan of TS, she’s just more of a Nora Jones / Natalie Merchant fan.

She fell asleep during the Midnights era which didn’t surprise me.

But she enjoyed what she saw and gained much respect. Who knows maybe I will eventually turn her into a Swiftie!

Almost Heaven!

My son and I took the King Ranch and drove to West Virginia yesterday to pick up some beef he had ordered.

It was a side of beef…half of a cow.

A friend of his raised some cattle on his farm, grass fed, drug free cattle.

We filled up 4 big coolers with frozen beef for the trip back to NC. We figured that he paid $5/lb for the beef including the butchers fee. Not a bad price really, when was the last time that you bought a T-bone steak for $5/lb?! I bought nothing because I don’t eat beef.

I was raised in WV and raised my kids there and it was nice to go back and revisit our hometown and old neighborhood. Some things have changed but mostly it’s the same place.

We left WV 20 years ago and I was glad to leave and have no desire to go back. My son, however, would go back tomorrow! Unlike me, he is an outdoorsman who loves to hunt and fish. Those things never appealed to me.

The highlight for me was spending the day with him and watching him interact with his friends. I see him every week but have never seen him with his friends before. They talked about hunting trips, guns, fishing…

Dude stuff, redneck stuff. I was lost in all of those conversations. They might as well be speaking a foreign language when talking about there different shotguns and ammo. It’s all gobbledygook to me!

Yesterday was a good day.

Handyman?

Getting the John Deere ready for the new year. I think I succeeded!

Removed mower deck.

Removed blades.

Sharpened blades.

Reattached and leveled deck.

Changed oil.

Changed oil filter.

Changed fuel filter.

Changed air filter.

Changed spark plugs

And put air in the tires.

I was actually able to restart mower and cut the front lawn!

The hardest part of this project was getting up and down off the garage floor!

No tools were thrown in anger and no new cuss words were invented during this project!!!
