Paper boat
Experimenting with a new way of wrapping wire forms. First covering with paper, wetting the surface to shrink around the form, and then coating with polyurethane to seal.

It all started with a craigslist post. I saw a post for a cnc cut balsa kneeboard blank and bookmarked it for over a year, before finally deciding it was time to take on a fun project.

An edge starting to take shape. I became inspired by the revival of George Greenough’s edgeboards.

Life goal = build a boat
Interim life goal = build a model boat
This model represents a hydrofoil concept for a 1 person sailboat. The rear rudder us operated with a control bar in the cockpit. Functional? Who knows, but I started making a full-size frame for a skin on frame construction!

A quick study of eyeglasses through 3D sketches. It was fun to make some wacky frames and difficult to achieve symmetry with such a malleable material.
Modeling with balsa has been a past time of mine since I was a wee lad. When I was younger I was fascinated with making futuristic spaceships and impossibly improbable vehicles. Lately, I’ve been interested in describing the organic and aerodynamic forms of boat hulls.

I learned how to TIG weld! Here are some of the first objects I made using found objects.

More silicone molding!
Afternoon blizzard sun lighting up some summer carvings. This sequence started out as pieces of marble foundation from a demolished building - cast into the woonasquatucket river
Making a DIY rotomold
After moving into our new office we needed a workbench. I found some incredible 16 'x 12"x 2" lumber and decided to make an workbench of epic length. After hauling the wood across the road by hand and blocking 2 lanes of traffic, assembly ensued.
Planing the surfaces smooth for joining
Simple frame w/ 2x4's and 4x4's. You can see the wood in the foreground is prepped for dowel pegging. Unfortunately I missed a progress shot of the dowel peg table top, so you'll have to take out your magnifying glass.
Clamps on clamps on clamps
Butterfly joining the cracks
Not perfect, but they'll work.

What's underneath all of Jerry's fur? I made a wireframe bear to show folks all of the sensors in Jerry the Bear.
My sister got married YAY! So we (dad, brother in law, me) made her a huppa.
I moved into a loft and found myself with the need for a separate sleeping space. I decided to build a loft and enlisted the help of my dad for a 2 day weekend project.
Below is a design that used standard 8' lumber and therefore required no wood to be cut (except for the staircase).
Materials
Initial flooring - 18" on center
Built upside down and flipped!
In position. We got lucky since the space for the loft was exactly 8'
Staircase beginning to take shape
The loft is in position
