The last time we were on a long flight, my wife and I invented a game we call "Little Guy."

You start a game of Little Guy by saying, "I'm gonna hand you a little guy." The little guy is some kind of baby animal you are imagining. "Oh," she might say in response, "Okay," and hold out her hands for it. I will then mime handing her the animal. This provides some clues as to the little guy's size, weight, and general ungainliness.

She then gets to ask questions about what kind of little guy this is, BUT NO QUESTIONS ABOUT HIS ACTUAL APPEARANCE OR SPECIES ARE ALLOWED. Qualitative questions, or questions about his behavior, are the only ones permitted. She can ask "Is he soft?" or "Does he seem nervous about being held?" or "If I put him in the bathtub, does he seem okay with that?" or "Would he like a lil grape?" or "Is he the sort of little fellow who would wear a vest in a children's book?" but not "Does he have fur," "Is he a reptile," "Is he from Asia," etc. Some questions are in a grey area so you have to follow your heart, but the point is not to identify the animal as fast as possible: the point is to guess the animal purely based on vibes + how he would act if he were in your living room right now.

And I'm not limited to yes or no answers! If she asks, "Would it feel appropriate to see this little guy in a propeller hat?" I can reply, "Oh no, he has a gravity to him. A bowler hat would be a more appropriate hat." Or if she asks, "Does this little guy have protagonist energy?" I can say something like, "he probably wouldn't be the main character in a children's cartoon. He'd probably be the main character's ditzy best friend who's always eating sandwiches, or something."

We're big Twenty Questions to kill time in a waiting room people, but Little Guy is more about the journey than the destination. It's got a different kind of sauce that's nice if "killing time" and "lowering anxiety" need to happen hand in hand.

Hiya! would you happen to know the literal meaning of めでたしめでたし, or how it may have come to mean what it does? I thought it was interesting how the entire concept of living happily ever after can be condensed into two words!!

Avatar

Hello you have come to the right place as I am the ultimate etymology nerd!!!!

So I didn’t know the origin of the word beforehand, actually I had never even thought about it, so I ran around on google. The following is a direct translation of this post, with my notes in [brackets]. (I did also cross-check with other sources; this post is simply rather nice with explaining)

While めでたしめでたし (medetashi medetashi, “and they lived happily ever after”), is rarely used in everyday life, but you may see it used often in books and on television. It’s well known as an expression that is used to signify the ending of a story or something similar, but have you really though about what ‘medetashi’ means? “Adding to the eyes” (目で足し)? “Multiple-choice flower buds” (芽で多肢)? What are the origins of this phrase?
I took it upon myself to find out.
-When is medetashi medetashi used?
-It’s used when a story ends with everyone having escaped danger, or with a happy ending, etc.
-Origin: “medetashi” comes from the shimo-nidan verb (explanation here. It’s kind of technical, though.) 愛づ ”medzu” in its renyou-kei form, becoming “mede”. It is then modified with the adjective 甚し “itashi” to become “medeitashi”. [Both “medzu” and “itashi” are no longer in common usage.] [It’s also implied that “medeitashi” was eventually shortened to “medetashi”, word-shortening being an extremely common phenomenon in Japanese.]
The breakup of the word is as follows:
“mede”: admiration, praise
“itashi”: used as an extreme intensifier. It can also take on the meaning “x and nothing but x”.
Thus, “medetashi” is thought to have originally meant “so wonderful that it can only be regarded in admiration.”
[ Another source says says「目出度い」and「芽出度い」, which are commonly used as kanji for “medetai” (a conjugation of “medetashi”). However, these are merely ateji, appropriate-seeming kanji imposed on a word long after its creation, and the original words have been forgotten by many.]
[If you are familiar with classical adjectival conjugations or even simply very attentive, you may have noticed that “medetashi” seemed to share a similar root with “omedetou”. You would be correct.
The renyou-kei (verb-connecting conjugation) of the adjective めでたし would be めでたく. Let us temporarily consider おめでたくあります (o-medetaku-arimasu, “((honorably) an-admirable-series-of-events this-is” ) as a sort of crude classical-modern hybrid of the modern phrase “omedetougozaimasu,” which is now commonly said as a phrase of congratulations or celebration, such as during the New Year.
There is a very widespread trend from classical Japanese to modern where ‘k’ sounds would be dropped, explaining the change from medetaku to medetau/medetou. (The modern ‘ou’ sound was written as ‘au’; there were no ‘au’ sounds in classical). The equivalent of ‘arimasu’ (to be) is ‘gozaimasu’, so you end up with ‘omedetougozaimasu’, which is sometimes shortened to ‘omoedetou’. ]

It makes me really sad that Anna doesn’t get half as much love and recognition as Elsa does because they’re both equally amazing characters and Anna is just such a beautiful person, inside and out, and I really relate to her and she’s got the optimism that I strive to have and I just wish more people would notice her because she’s just really great ok

Can everyone who reads this PLEASE reblog it?!?!?  Libraries literally saved my life as a child!

Being abused at home, bullied at school and lost in the world, the library and all the books I could escape to the most amazing worlds, kept me alive!

I would walk to the library, and spend all day, from 10 am to 9 pm reading there!! I got special awards for how many books I read, I wrote little blurbs on why i loved the books (probably why I love to BETA and do ARCs)

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE Just hit the green arrows and the reblog!!!

As a 50 year old woman, the library offers me so much. Digital art pads to borrow, 3D printing, book clubs that are face to face (yeah, the introvert likes face to face because a moderator will stomp on anyone getting snarky)

New books in LARGE PRINT! I’m visually challenged and as much as I love my kindle, The feel of a real book in my hands will always be a beloved feeling!

Our library also has quarterly books sales of almost free books!! For 5$USD we get in a day early and can buy as many as we want. Anyone else has to wait and there is a limit for the first 2 days.

Also many, many libraries have inter library loan(it may be called something different). This means if they don’t have the item you want, they can get it for you. This may include photocopy/pdf of articles. This can also include along with books and DVDs, microfilm/fiche which is also a huge resource. Check around for libraries that are listed as depositories if you want to look at government documents.

Remember that many colleges and universities have open stacks for the public. You will likely have to pay a membership fee but you will get to stuff.

The library was one of my favorite places to go as a kid and I still live to go and just. Sit and read. Or do homework. The university I’m at has a massive 8-story one I love to just wonder around in~ Great places

In the past, whenever I've seen a post about this site being sold again, I've thought "maybe we should do a Kickstarter or something and have the users own it". Of course, my immediate next thought has always been that nope, that'd never work, because that would probably put a lot of power in the hands of bullies.

Currently I'm not so sure that would necessarily be worse than what's happening right now, but I still don't think that's the right approach.

However. If the people running AO3 would start a fundraiser to buy this blue hellsite and run it according to the same principles as AO3 I would totally give them my money. At least them I'd trust to run this site - and not into the ground.

Less nazis, more... ehem, citrus scale. Also no app removes a lot of power from Apple.

It's a nice dream, wouldn't you say?

Being kind isn't actually about how much shit you can quietly take. You can be kind and still shut down people who attempt to use and manipulate you. Kindness is about treating others well whenever you can, not about how much you're willing to suffer for others. So don't confuse being kind with being a victim and a pushover. No one with your best interests at heart will claim that it's the same thing.

AU where Vader joins Luke at the end of ESB but all of Vader’s underlings are too scared to tell Palpatine that he deserted so they have to pretend Vader is still on their ship and hunting down rebels like Palpatine told him too for as long as they possibly can

it’s absolutely crucial that at some point someone has to dress up in a full Darth Vader mask and suit and get on space skype with Palpatine, but since the only person they have who even begins to match Vader’s frame sounds like a soft bunny when they talk, they have someone else doing the voice off-camera

Luke, Leia, and Vader catch wind of this while they’re hunting for Han and Vader has a brief freakout that Palpatine cloned him and was immediately ready to replace him, which Luke and Leia go along with because hey, it’s not weirder than anything else they’ve experienced. BUT Luke decides that they have to go rescue this new Vader too, because he’s also technically family and if Vader (original flavor) can change, then so can Cool Ranch Vader.

Cool Ranch Vader, who is three overworked and underpaid bridge techs in a trashbag, does not agree.
