“I just don’t think it’s a good idea.” Liam made himself comfortable on your bed, propping his feet up though he was a little tense with the topic of conversation, crossing his arms over his chest. You stood at the foot of the bed only wearing a robe, your hair tucked into a towel, face covered in a blue mask that was tightening by the second.
You turned around, your mouth forming a stiff frown and you were unable to move it, holding up two dresses to Liam, wiggling them until he got the point. He seemed to be thinking for a minute before pointing to the one in your left hand, a form-fitting midi dress, the sleeves long and sleek, conservative but eye-catching. Again, you jetted off to the restroom, leaving Liam on the other side of the door.
“Nikki?” Liam knocked a moment later, worry laced in his voice along with something else you couldn’t quite place.
When you emerged again your face was clean, hair falling down in its natural state, a smile on your face as you headed over to your vanity, eager to do your makeup. “Louis’ one of your best friends. What’s so wrong with me going out on one date with him?” You turned around, pressing your lips against a tissue to set your lipstick. “Unless there’s something you know that I don’t. What is it?” You were suddenly panicked that maybe Louis wasn’t the guy that he seemed.
Liam shook his head, resting his hands on your shoulders. “No, there’s nothing wrong with him. It’s just—it’s nothing. Have a great night.” He gnawed on his bottom lip, letting you know he was still holding something back.
Standing, you walked over to where he now sat on your bed, taking a seat next to him. “You know you can tell me, whatever it is?” You bumped his shoulder, giving him a genuine smile.
With a heavy sigh he started, staring at the ground as he spoke. “Well you know we’ve been friends for longer than I can remember. You’re my best friend and I don’t want anything to come in between that.” He started, your heads shooting up when the doorbell rang.
You stood, giggling and giddy, slipping into your shoes and grabbing your clutch. “That must be Lou. Look Liam, I promise you, no one’s going to get in the way of our friendship. Nothing could ever take me away from you. You’re my guy.” Liam rubbed the back of his neck, standing and taking your hand. “Do I look okay?” You were suddenly nervous, tugging at the hem of your dress and running your fingers through your hair over again.
“Yeah, you look beautiful.” Liam shook his head as you moved quickly from your room down the hallway, grabbing a jacket from the coat hanger beside the door. A grip on your wrist caused you to turn around, Liam holding you back for another moment, startling you as he leaned down, covering his mouth with yours. “Have fun.” He stammered once he’d pulled away, both of you blushing and surprised with him.
The doorbell dinged once again, pulling you from your trance. You opened it to find Louis in perfect form, speaking to Liam and complimenting you before holding out a hand, leading you to his car.
You arrived at the nice restaurant Louis had chosen for your date, having gotten to know each other a bit on the ride over. Throughout the night, there was nothing you could find wrong with him, funny, charismatic, and handsome, Louis seemed like the perfect, sometimes snarky gentleman. Still, something inside you was doubtful, lingering in your mind, or perhaps on your mouth. Conversation flowed easily with Louis, the pair of you wining and dining over food you couldn’t pronounce the name of, Louis laughing as he led you back outside, looking to his left before pausing for a moment.
“That was a bit too stuffy for me I guess.” He tugged at his tie, nodding in the opposite direction of his car. “There’s an ice cream stand over there. Dessert?” You nodded, his hand resting comfortably on your back as you walked to the stand, taking cones of the sweet treat. You walked for nearly fifteen minutes, chatting and getting to know each other further before turning back around, heading back to his car.
Louis cleared his throat when he pulled back up to your home, opening your door and lingering by the doorway. “We should do this again sometime.” He blushed a little, looking down at his feet.”
“Yeah, I’ll give you a call.” You smiled when he looked back up, Louis leaning in a little, your biggest fear of the night coming to life since Liam had kissed you earlier. In a smooth motion you leaned over, pressing a quick kiss to his cheek. “Goodnight.” You nodded before opening your door, a stumbling noise making you jump as Liam struggled to back away from the peep hole he’d been spying through. “I though you would’ve been gone by now.” You crossed your arms over your chest, slipping off your coat and shoes by the door.
“Sorry, I was just.” Liam couldn’t help but chuckle, laughing harder when you joined in with him. “So…” He started, waiting for you to make a move.
You groaned dramatically, walking over to Liam slowly. “So, I guess we’re going to try this.” You linked your arms around his neck, standing on your toes. “But we’ll have to find a way to tell Louis.” He smiled, a wish he’d been making for years as he descended his mouth onto yours.
