"You think I'm going to feel sorry for you?" [Nier Gestalt indie rp blog]

“Oh Dad…you know I’m a big girl! I can handle cook-            ing by myself!”

Not that she didn’t appreciate the offer though! She just wanted to prove to her loving father that she was perfectly capable of doing the same thing that normally adults would do. Granted, most of the  dishes that she created never turned out exactly the way she wanted…but her father ate them any- way. And knowing that her papa loved it was good enough for her.

“Well.... alright. Just remember you need to cook the fish well, but don’t let it burn, okay?”

He was definitely not going to enjoy this one, but he would do anything to keep his little girl happy. Even eat her poorly prepared meals. She tried, he knew. Nier held back a sigh. At the very least it was something to eat, but perhaps he should ask someone to give her some lessons. Yonah would probably enjoy it, and if all went well, maybe he would come back one day and dinner would be edible.

Goodness, was she jealous! Her papa, out having all the fun while she was stuck inside everyday reading books! If only she was better, then she’d be able to  go with her father to Seafront and learn how to fish too. But she wasn’t about to complain about that out loud. After all, she was content with the things she had now as well.

“Yeah! And I know the perfect reh-sipee for it too!”

“Oh yeah?”                 Nier was already mentally preparing himself for the ordeal. Though he couldn’t show the disgust on his face, there was a faint hint of alarm. He doubted the child would notice. He smoothed his features into an encouraging smile. Though he knew the meal wouldn’t be pleasant, he knew she was trying. What little she could do, he would let her. Even if it wrecked havoc on his insides later.                               “How about I help you with that?”

Lars briefly glanced at the items he held in his hands—bandages, suture thread, antiseptic solution…

image

His lips pulled into a line before speaking again, “Medical.”

The man explained that he traveled a lot; maybe Lars had caught his face somewhere along the way, “Me too, but I’m referring more to your features.” He knew someone that had those features too, but it was difficult to put a name to the face he had in his head, “She’s a little girl actually.”

Nier’s features went from neutral to serious in an instant. His frown deepened as the other went on, arms dropping form their crossed place over his chest. He wasn’t about to jump to any conclusions, but he wasn’t too happy that this stranger seemed to know his daughter.

“How do you know my daughter?” His tone of voice came a little more snappish than he intended.

          “Fishing lessons?”

How funny! She thought she was the only stu- dent in the house, but apparently she was mis- taken!

“Is he a good teacher? Have you caught a lot            of fish?”

With his new skill in tow, Yonah knew at once that this would provide their small family of two with a lot of meat— no longer would they  only have to live off of mutton and vegetables. Or at least that’s what she hoped.

                         “He knows a lot.”

Which might be an understatement of the facts. That fisherman could talk to him for days and days (had done so already twice). Nier smiled at his daughter’s amusement. He nodded--fishing was time consuming, but he had caught quite a few.

“Fishing takes time, but I have caught some for us. We can make a nice stew. Would you like that?”

          “Oh wow! Thank you, Dad!”

Gasping in delight, his child stepped closer to inspect the slices of fruit closely. Fresh…and it looked juicy too! Yonah’s nose needed to only inhale the sweet fra- grance it had in order for her mouth to begin watering.

“You went to Seafront? How was it? Did you see any            dolphins?”

Yonah always loved hearing about her father’s travels. He went to so many places on foot or by boar — all of which she had never seen before. Though she wished that she could join him on his ventures outside of the village, she knew right away what his answer would be: “you need to stay home and rest.”

“Yeah. There were dolphins. Sea lions, too, laying in the sand. The sailors said the waves were a bit rough, but it looked calm to me.”

There were times he’d like to take her see outside the confines of the village, but aside from her illness, it was dangerous. Nier wanted to keep her safe, and that meant leaving her here, in this house. He hoped his stories and her books would be enough.

“An old fisherman has been giving me fishing lessons.”

“Hmm?” Lars set down the item and looked over his shoulder at the man that had approached him, “Oh, just a couple supplies.”

He turned to completely face him, looking him over for a moment, “You look…kind of familiar.” Maybe not him persay, but his features reminded him of someone he knew.

                     “Supplies? What kind?”

The comment made Nier frown, head canted slightly to the side. Being always on the move often meant he met a lot of people, but the man in question wasn’t at all recognizable. That said, he did see a lot of faces.

“I travel the area a lot.”

“What did you get me, Dad? Is it something good?”

Yonah couldn’t hide the surge of joy that rushed through her veins at that moment. Her father was home at last! And he had a gift for her too! Hope- fully he’d stay for a bit longer than usual though; the child knew he always left after he returned.

“Of course it is. I’d never get you anything bad.”

A soft laugh left him then, and from behind his back, he produced a plate of sliced melon. Hopefully this would make up for his absence, if only a little. Her joyous anticipation was enough to put a smile on his face. This was why he was always out there, to keep that smile on her face; to keep her safe and warm.

“I brought it all the way from Seafront for you.”

                       “I brought you something.”

From Seafront, but he would tell her about that after he gave her the melon. It had been a few days since he’d been home, and though he knew Devola and Popola had come around since, he couldn’t help feeling terrible being away all the time.

                     “Yo. Did you need something?”

It was a very rare moment that he wasn’t moving around, but this just so happened to be one of them.

+                      “You think I’m going to feel sorry for you?”

He hesitated for one second; Ancient Overlord gripped in one hand, ready to strike. He’d seen himself in the knelt Shade. He recognized the desperation, and in that second saw the Shadowlord as a person, instead of the monster he had been convinced of. It threw him off. He understood the creature; this once human thing that had held onto his determination to restore his daughter. It was the same determination within Nier that had pushed him to this moment.

Ancient Overlord fell in one harsh strike to end the monster’s destructive life. The moment of hesitation, of weakness, was gone along with the Shadowlord. Any thought toward this moment would be vanished from his mind--and yet there was part of him that did understand; made him a liar. He wasn’t sorry for the other. With that he had been honest, but when it came to Yonah, to their daughter, they were one in the same. It wasn’t something he liked to think about. He didn’t care to understand all of what Popola and Devola had said. Replicants, Gestalts--someone years ago created them for the “True humans”. Nier wasn’t about to let someone else rule him or anyone else--especially not his daughter. Maybe he and his...Gestalt...were similar, but he would do this all over again if he had to. Even with this knowledge.

His gaze fell on Yonah, fallen as she was, and all other thoughts fled. None of that mattered. All that mattered was he’d saved Yonah. Screw the Shadowlord, the Shades, whatever they were or were not. He’d saved his daughter, and they would live for however long they had left.
