Some Information for Los Angeles Citizens Who Want to Support Police Reform

CIVILIAN OVERSIGHT

LA did vote to have a non-police backed civilian committee to oversee the LA county sheriff's department.

It was proposed and approved by the LA County Board of Supervisors. Mark Ridley Thomas, Hilda Solis, and Sheila Kuehl voted in favor of the proposition. The two supervisors who voted against it were Don Knabe and Michael D. Antonovich

In 2016, the LA County Board of Supervisors is losing it's two conservative supervisors who voted against civilian oversight. Janice Hahn is a democrat who is posed to take Don Knabe's conservative seat. According to her twitter, is anti-gun, but we don't know where she stands on police reform.

Pay attention to the 2016 elections for these two LA County Board of Supervisors seats. This is a governmental institution that has to the power to implement police reform.

BODY CAMS

The Mayor of LA, Eric Garcetti, vowed to provide nearly every police officer with a body cam by the end of 2016. But the price and contract negotiations delayed the initiatives approval by City Hall. The city council finally gave it's approval in June, 2016. HOWEVER, the plan has a few failings, including:LAPD does not have to release body cam footage to the public without a court order.

There have been several bills proposed to support this in the Senate Public Safety Committee. The one that passed, AB-2611, prohibits police departments from releasing any audio or video that depicts the death of an officer in the line of duty unless the officer's family approves.

Of the Senators in the Public Safety Committee,  only Senator Mark Leno voted "no." The Senators that voted to pass this bill are Senator Loni Hancock, Senator Joel Anderson, Senator Steven M. Glazer, Senator Carol Liu, Senator Bill Monning, Senator Jeff Stone.

These Senators all sit on the California Public Safety Committee and can be influential in passing better police oversight legislation.

The LA City Council was also influential in delaying, but also passing, the body cam initiative.

Great News! The FCC extended the comment period to MIDNIGHT, THIS FRIDAY, 7/18.

And why?  Because “an overwhelming surge in traffic on our website” made it “difficult for many people to file comments” on the FCC’s electronic filing system.

LET'S KEEP AT IT.

Comment at dearfcc.org and share whatever videos/literature you think will inspire your friends and family to do the same!

Above is CH's explanation of Net Neutrality, but I'll link a couple more.
