Just Keep Swimming

Rescued pup 696 can float from birth, but he still needs to learn to dive and glide in the water. So Aquarium caregivers take on a new role: swim coach!

In the wild, mom would tow the pup between feeding and resting areas.

Moving past floating.

Soon he’s swimming on his own!

Play time helps pup 696 gain even more confidence in the water.

Inscrutable sturgeons

A sturgeon checks out a piece of food using external taste buds and feelers.

Who says fish need to have scales? This beguiling beauty has five rows of bony plates instead. It’s also got taste buds on the outside of its mouth!

Aquarium guests come face to face with sturgeons in our Monterey Bay Habitats exhibit.

Visitors to our Monterey Bay Habitats exhibit sometimes remark that sturgeons look prehistoric—and they are! Sturgeons have been swimming around since velociraptors and triceratops roamed the earth. After surviving millions of years and literally outliving the dinosaurs, sturgeons now face a threat that’s reduced their numbers to, in the case of some species, near extinction.

A sturgeon sucks up shrimp and squid with it’s low-slung,vacuum-like mouth.

That threat is overfishing. Sturgeon eggs, also known as caviar, can fetch up to $100 per ounce. Sturgeons mature slowly and spawn only once every 2-8 years, so the hunt for sturgeons and sturgeon eggs has devastated their populations. Luckily farmed sturgeon provides a sustainable alternative. (Check out our Seafood Watch program for more info on how to enjoy sturgeon sustainably.)

Spot sturgeons, sharks, and rays in our shark cam.

You can see these stunning, prehistoric fish cruise around the Monterey Bay Habitats exhibit on our shark cam!
