Coming Clean

He really shouldn’t have been as nervous as he was, but really? He had absolutely no idea how she’d react. Would she be mad like Knuckles? Would she cry? Would she be mad at the age difference between he and Tails? He really had no clue.

Sonic offered her a smile nonetheless. No point in starting this on an awkward note, right? Even if it… would definitely turn into one.

"Hey, Amy!" He began, raising a hand to give her a quick wave, "Hey, uh… I need to talk to you."

Very slowly, the rosette lifted a hand of her own to return the wave. It was almost automatic looking, expression blank for a few moments. There was a silence after Sonic spoke, as she was a bit lost in her own thoughts.

"Oh! ...Okay," she replied, swallowed, then nodded. A hand moved to the edge of the door to push it open, shoes sliding against the floor as she stepped aside and gestured for him to come in. It seemed cooking would have to wait for now.

Coming Clean

Deep breaths. Deep breaths. What was the big deal? He was only going to have to tell Amy that he… lied to her. And continued to lie to her. And got Tails in on the lie.

And that he didn’t have a girlfriend. Because he had a boyfriend. And that his boyfriend was Tails. You know, just uh… really big news. And if she reacted at all like Knuckles had for lying? Ah man, was he in for a treat. He could only hope that his busted face would give her enough sympathy to not beat him up as well.

He really didn’t want to do this.

With a long, uneasy breath, he finally rang her doorbell and waited.

Pink ears flickered at the sound of a doorbell. That was odd. She rarely got visitors anymore.

Drying her hands off on the dish towel hanging by the sink, she smoothed her dress down after and scurried over to the door. Slender fingers gripped the door knob, turned it, and pulled, eager eyes looking to see who had come to her home.

Oh. Oh.

"...Sonic?" It'd been so long. Months, really. It felt longer to her, but seeing his face-- which looked a little roughed up?-- was like seeing a ghost. She'd spent so much time getting over what had happened, and now that she was finally getting there, this was like a slap to any progress she'd made. Nearly sending it crawling into hiding deep within her, she found the courage to stay calm.

Relax. Everything is okay. He's just Sonic...Just Sonic.

Blaze had been through a long week, and honestly? Having some time to herself, to do something she genuinely liked doing? Finding clothes in anther dimension? Didn’t sound too bad right now.

"…I’d be interested, actually. Between you and I, strictly."

"Blaze!" Oh, it'd been a while since she'd seen her! Smiling wide, the petite hedgehog practically skipped over and wrapped her arms around her friend in an embrace.

"That sounds fine to me! When did you want to go?"

"... Would anyone wanna go shopping with me?"

"Anything to take my mind off of this."

Of all the things that were going to come out of her mouth, THAT wasn’t one of them. Well, he could have guessed it had something or the other to do with Sonic, but…. this news hit him like a sledgehammer. He stared at her with wide eyes.

"What… really? He has a girlfriend now??" he asked, completely baffled by the news. "Named *Miley*?? He never said a thing about this to me…"

Much as he wanted to go on about it, he could not ignore her face. He winced slightly, deciding to shut up a moment and take a seat down beside her. “Ah, Amy… I’m sorry,” he murmured. “… I’m not really an expert at this, to say the least, but… stuff happens,” he said, mentally berating himself that that sounded lame. “I mean…. aaw crap, I got nothin’,” he grunted, resting his chin on his hand and frowning.

"It's okay, Knuckles. You don't have to say anything to make me feel better." Everyone usually did, and she was tired of that. She didn't need to be babied. She was nineteen now, a young woman. She could handle this. Handle her fragile heart being broken.

But she'd learn and grow from it. Sonic was happy, at least. Maybe not with her, but with another girl, and as long as he was smiling, she could accept it, right? Not right away, no, it would take time for her heart to mend, but...

Sniffling, she curled her legs up and rested her chin against her knees. Emerald eyes stared out at the sky for a few moments before she casually looked to her friend.

".. Thank you. For asking if I was okay. It means a lot..!"

Knuckles remained unconvinced. “Yeeeah, I don’t believe that for an instant,” he drawled out, uncurling his arms and approaching her, a look of concern now coming over his usually gruff face. “C’mon, Amy. Talk to me. Something’s bothering you… give me a clue so that I can at least *try* to help out.”

He really wanted to help, didn't he?

Shuffling her feet against the ground, the hedgehog ran a hand through her quills and sighed. "It's Sonic. Gosh, what else would it be?" she murmured, moving her hand back down so she could cross her arms over her chest. Her fingers idly tapped against them.

"He's dating this girl named Miley now. I.. I'm happy for him! I am. Very happy. But at the same time, I guess I'm disappointed. Not really surprising, huh?"

She paused.

"... I just waited so long.. for nothing."

"Can’t complain," the echidna grunted as he approached her. "Same old same old. Put up some outer defenses around the ME, decided to hit the surface for a moment," he said casually, arms over his chest as he regarded her response. "And it sure don’t seem like nothing," he noted with a raised brow. "Are you positive you’re alright? You seem… I dunno, kinda downcast."

"That's good to hear! I'm happy you've been doing well." She was. It'd been a while since she had heard from anybody. The rosette had lost track of the voice mails she hadn't listened to. Perhaps she'd taken more time than needed curled up in bed crying... Pitiful, really. But she was slowly starting to recover.

Image

"More than positive! I'm peachy keen, promise." Her attempt at a smile was feeble.

Miley.

That name had been haunting her all week. She didn't know a Miley. She had never known a Miley, and probably never would know a Miley. But Sonic knew a Miley.

God, where had she gone wrong--

Was she too persistent? Too crazy? Didn't give him enough space, chased him for too long? The rosette couldn't blame him. If someone did all of those things to her, would she really reciprocate the feelings?

Their love always had been unrequited, and it would continue to be so. She had to accept that. Oh, it was so hard.

Hand shaking, petite fingers reached out to grasp the handle of her cup. Slowly she brought it to her lips, taking a sip of the water inside. She needed to clear her mind and really think things through. What if Sonic was happy? That's what really mattered here, wasn't it?

Her childhood hero and friend, the boy she had fallen head over heels in love with, the one who had saved her life and made her laugh and made her cry. He was happy out there with another girl.

.. Maybe she could learn to live with it. As long as Sonic was smiling, what did she have to worry about?

Amy put her cup down and sighed.

She fumbled with her hands, letting out a long, defeated sigh. She knew she couldn’t get any more out of him. She was just lucky that got the girl’s name.

"Okay. Thanks…" She bit her lip, turning to leave.

"Amy?", he asked weakly. Man, he felt terrible. He knew what it was like to be attracted to someone for so long. "I’m sorry."

"It's not your fault..." she muttered before making her leave.

"Okay, but—!" Who was Miley? … Who was Miley? Really, who was Miley? "… How long has he known her? Do you think they’ll even last? I mean— they could break up, right? How close are they? Taaaiilllsss…"

"That’s it.", he swallowed, putting his hands up in front of him. "I can’t say anymore. It’s not my place."

She fumbled with her hands, letting out a long, defeated sigh. She knew she couldn't get any more out of him. She was just lucky that got the girl's name.

"Okay. Thanks..." She bit her lip, turning to leave.

"… Miley?" she stared. That definitely wasn’t a name that she reconized, "… Who’s Miley?"

"That’s all I’m going to say Amy.", he insisted. "I’ve said more than I should. Just—you don’t know her. Okay?"

Augh, did I just refer to myself as a girl?

"Okay, but—!" Who was Miley? ... Who was Miley? Really, who was Miley? "... How long has he known her? Do you think they'll even last? I mean— they could break up, right? How close are they? Taaaiilllsss..."
