Summer briefed him on her breakup with Teddy, and Aiden nodded as she finished. A small part of him felt bad for the guy, but that lasted about as long as her explanation.

He couldn’t help smiling when she told him she’d missed him. “Me too,” he said, hands in his pockets as they continued their walk across campus. He alternated staring at the ground in front of their feet and glancing back at the blonde.
The bonfire was background noise at that point. “Alright so, what was the best part of your summer?” Aiden didn’t hear her answer so much as he just listened to her voice. He hadn’t drank much of the punch, but it was already helping him to relax. He wanted to touch her. When the impulse became too strong, he gently shoulder-checked her, then stayed close enough that their arms brushed after each step. After some time, Aiden glanced up to find they were approaching the dorms, and he slowed to a stop. “Should we head back?”

Summer was rambling, just telling the boy storied he probably didn’t care about about her time in France. Mostly an attempt to keep some sort of conversation going. As Aiden’s shoulder collided with her own Summer let out a quiet laugh, lightly bumping hers into his in return. Eventually she stopped talking and the two of them just walked in comfortable silence. She looked forward to the moments where he was close enough that his arm brushed against hers. Looking up at the dorm building looming over them, Summer glanced at Aiden fore looking to the now distant burning fire. She hadn’t noticed the lack of noise “Yeah, we can head back if you want” she said as she turned to face him once more “Or- I mean- I do have those cookies I promised you up in my room” Summer added, shrugging her shoulders. Her eyes landed on the familiar entrance of the girls dorms “We could hang out a little before my fun new roomie gets back if you want? Or not- I won’t get offended if you don’t want to” Again Summer was rambling, making herself look like a bit of an idiot as she spoke. The smile that had been glued to her face faltering as her gaze fell on him once more

Aiden’s brow furrowed as he grasped what Summer had just told him. “Wait, so you’re not dating anyone?” He conveniently left Teddy’s name out of their conversation. Aiden couldn’t recall the last time he’d actually said the guy’s name. His former team captain, and the reason he was now single, was generally not someone he wanted to bring up.
“Sorry it didn’t work out for you guys.” Aiden stared down at his hands, where he absently swirled his nearly empty drink. He wasn’t that sorry. To be honest he was a little intrigued, but he wouldn’t pry. Summer would tell him the details if she wanted to. But more than anything else, he was confused. Even after all they’d been through, he still wanted her. He was just starting to feel comfortable talking to Summer again, enough that they’d been texting each other regularly over break. Summer having a boyfriend meant she was off limits, and that was so much easier than grappling with himself over his feelings for her.
Suddenly aware of how public their conversation was, and how much he’d rather it not be, Aiden finished off his drink and set it down. “Do you maybe want to take a walk or something?”
ImageImage
“Nope” she mused lightly, emphasizing her point. She didn’t know why, but a laugh bubbled out of her as he apologised for her break up. Possibly because she knew he wasn’t actually sorry at all- possibly because she herself wasn’t really sorry about it. For a moment she played with the idea of telling him not to apologise but instead she opted not to say much of anything at all. Not here at least. It was a little strange being where they were together again- the last school bonfire they had gone to had been their first time out together and she got a weird sense of nostalgia as she stood next to him.

When he finally broke the momentary silence, Summer nodded her head and followed suite in finishing her drink and placing her cup inside his "Yeah- a walk would be good” She hadn’t even realised how surrounded they were- Aiden had always had this way of just drawing her in, causong anyone else to melt away around them when they were together and it seemed that even after months apart that was still something he was able to do. She quickly looked over the crowd of students before following him- taking a moment to grab his arm as they weaved through the bulk of people so they didn’t lose each other. As the crowd thinned, Summer let her hand drop to her side.

Once out of ear shot Summer turned towards him for a moment as they walked ‘But- um- yeah’ she nodded, her words as eloquent as ever “I guess there was just like- I just wasn’t feeling it- so yeah we’re done. Kaput” everything was always complicated where Teddy was involved and for the first time in a long time it felt like a great relief to be free of that. “Anyways I’m sure this is the last thing you want to hear about. I’m just glad we're working on being friends- I really did miss you”

“Um, it was good, mostly.” Aiden racked his brain for something to say as he poured drinks for Summer and himself, but she already knew what he’d been up to. A whole lot of nothing, and then a whole lot of training.
“Oh, by the way, Felix says he might come later,” he said as he handed Summer her drink. “I’m guessing he needs a nap. He’s been bitchy all day.” Aiden shook his head with a smile as he made to lean his backside against the table and then glanced over at Summer who followed suit.
He caught her eye for a few seconds before raising his cup and taking a large drink. “So, what about you?” he asked, turning his body towards her. “Was Europe awesome or what?”
“I guess I kind of knew the answer to that already” Summer mused as she watched him pour them both a drink. Nodding in thanks as he handed the cup to her, Summer quickly brought it to her lips taking a short sip before bringing it down again “Yeah- I stopped by your place earlier with Liam and he was a little pissy. Weird”

Another sip as she diverted her gaze to the grass at her feet, only looking up when he began asking about the trip to Europe “Yeah. It was awesome actually- kinda bitter sweet at the end with everyone going their separate ways and what not. But over all pretty fun” Summer shrugged lightly as her eyes trailed up to meet Aiden’s again “I still think it would have been a little more fun if you were there”

“Nah, you look better.” Was it considered flirting if he was just stating the obvious? Aiden glanced down and fought a brief moment of embarrassment before looking back at Summer again.

“Actually, you kinda look like this girl who promised me some fancy Italian cookies.”

Smiling at him, Summer simply shook her head as she let out a quiet laugh “You’re too sweet” she commented, nudging her head to silently ask him to walk with her towards the table where the drinks were. Another laugh bubbled out of her as Aiden spoke “I suppose I do- they’re all back in my room though so you’ll have to wait. How was your summer?”

aiden: here aiden: don't see you
Aiden stared at his phone for a minute before sliding it into his back pocket and scanning the quad again. He saw a few familiar faces, but not the blonde he was looking for.
At least he was away from the dorm for a while. Felix was in some kind of funk and it was throwing off all of his roommates, but especially Liam, since the two were normally attached at the hip. Aiden didn’t really get it. Felix seemed fine the last time they’d seen each other, back at camp. It was just today, their first day back in Rosewood, that he seemed off.  Aiden had thought he’d wanna come to the bonfire and chill after the weird tension earlier, but his roommate had other ideas, so Aiden was meeting up with Summer alone. For the first time in months.
His back pocket buzzed, and he grabbed for his phone to check the latest notification.

It took Aiden a second before he got it and bee-lined for the food table. Hopefully someone had thought ahead and supplied drinks too, cuz he could really use the help tonight. He was sure he looked like a total dork as he approached the table and gave Summer a smile and a quick wave, but by the excited sound she made and the hug she gave him, he didn’t think she noticed.

Checking her phone for the umpteenth time, Summer let out a sigh. Her brother had already left the party and Corby seemed to have vanished into thin air leaving her alone waiting for Aiden and hopefully the rest of his roommates. Looking down at her phone as it lit up and vibrated in her hand, a small smirk formed on her face as she quickly replied, making sure she was standing away from the crowd to the boys could find her with ease. It didn't take long for her to lock eyes with Aiden, the boy quickly pushing his way to her. Alone

Him being alone wasn’t necessarily a bad thing, just gave a lot of potential for awkwardness she’d rather avoid. She wasn’t really sure if he was legitimately okay with them being friends. Still she was beyond glad to see him and his adorably dorky smile and seeing him now really emphasized just how much she missed hanging out with him. The light buzz from the punch and ‘cookies’ she had earlier caused her to be a little friendlier and a little less awkward than she might have been and when she pulled away from the hug, she couldn’t help the grin that was plastered on her face “It’s so good to see you. You look- really good” she informed him as she took a step back and gave him a once over, the conservation starting very similar to the way their last one had started all those months ago.
