Offering a small smile in her direction to try and calm her nerves, he tilted his head slightly. He’d met plenty of girls who were out of their mind with happiness upon meeting Tony, and he was impressed with how well Ashley was holding herself together. Tilting his head again but to the other side, he breathed out a gentle sigh.

Definitely intrigued by the last sentence, a brow raises in an almost challenging manner. “Oh? Do explain why we’d need that? Other than torturing purposes, which is illegal in this country—” He’s got a teasing smile but a much more serious expression. He wants to know what in the world they could use it for.

"Well, it's become increasingly known that there are mutants in our world who have various capabilities. If one was to say make poor choices are harm the public, and their advancement had something to do with speech, the collar could basically make their voice inept and render them unable to use it." Ashley explained quickly, not wanting him to think poorly on her idea.

"Also if a prisoner is being taken to court it can be used to stop them fro threatening families or people around them as a sort of revenge thing. It's just an idea right now."

[ a slight nod and he walks a few steps ahead of her, just to get there first and be able to hold the door open for her, so she doesn’t have to maneuver around it difficultly. motioning to one of the seats, he sets the bags down to go up to the counter and check on bus schedules and destinations. he soon finds that one leaving in about half an hour is going to Cincinnati and that would be their best bet for the moment. ]

"Cincinnati, that’s the closest to Chicago."

[ he settles down next to her, holding out a ticket and settling one of the bags on his left. ]

"Leaves in half an hour.            You didn’t really think I was going to leave without you, did you?”

[ she took the ticket from him with a slight smile on her face. there was a slight mumble of thanks as she leaned back slightly in the chair. it took her a moment to speak to him as she decided to think about her answer. no she didn't think he would leave her but it seemed like the best chance for him. ]

"No. I was going to tell you to though."

[ ashley watched him or a moment before gazing down. ]

"That way at least one of us would survive."

As soon as Steve left, Bucky laid down on his side, almost like he was going to sleep. More because he was thinking now. Laying still and thinking. His thoughts were interupted as she quietly came into the room, speaking. “Yeah, it was fine. We just… talked.” A hand darts up to touch his eye which was weirdly wet. He told himself it was nothing, and just a side-effect of laying on his side.

Before she left, he spoke louder, “What about that dance? You said you’d go dancing, and… what if we don’t have a chance after the war?” He paused, looking down at the floor, “Tomorrow? Or is that too soon? The day after?”

Ashley looked at him slightly shocked, her mouth slightly agape from his words. He actually wanted to take her dancing? She had thought it was just something to be said to fill the air around them. However it appeared that her thoughts were wrong and he really did want to take her out for dancing.

Finally she nodded a little bit. "Okay. Tomorrow night maybe?" She questioned with a slight smile on her face. "There's a great place down the road about a block or so. I'll get some release papers so you can leave for awhile." Smiling, she stepped forward. "Are you sure you want to go?"

"You’re right, this way."

they were lucky the hospital wasn’t off to the very edge of town and the bus station happened to be just a few buildings down, by the corner. they’d have to be careful, though, who knows if hydra was going to be putting out search warrants for all the shield agents who’d escaped.

"I’m not leavin’ you behind. If they catch you, they’ll kill you. I couldn’t live with that. Despite the ‘tough guy’ exterior, I can’t just leave someone to die. We can get through this together, no damn HYDRA agent’s going to kill me. They haven’t yet, have they?"

[ he’d promised her that he’d get her to safety and he wasn’t going to break it unless he got shot down himself.

[ she looked up at him, realizing that there was no reason left to argue. james seemed the type to keep his promises and it seemed his new identity of aaron was the same. already she felt safe just being around him. ]

"Okay. I believe you."

[ with a smile she began to move down the sidewalk where the bus station symbol could be seen. the sooner they got there and on a bus the safer they would be. hopefully a bus would be leaving soon and they could get on the road. ]

It was maybe ten, fifteen minutes before, low and behold, Steve Rogers popped into the room, giant grin on his face. Bucky let out a controlled breath, not wanting to show how glad he was for his friend to be there, but a smile spreads across his face.

They talk, they actually sit down and have an honest to god talk about important things. How the boys are doing, how Steve’s doing. How Bucky’s doing. Steve focuses more on the last and first ones than anything else. As far as Bucky can see, this whole super soldier thing is permanent. If that was a good or bad thing, he couldn’t tell yet. But at least the kid wasn’t getting asthma attacks every five minutes.

After a while, Bucky was able to convince Steve to get out of his room and go back to go win that war. “But don’t win it ‘til I get back. You’re goin’ to need me if you want to win.” Last words as Steve grins and heads out.

Only after she saw Steve leave did Ashley return to his room. She knocked softly then stepped inside. "Well, it is growing late so I wanted to inform you that I'll be retiring for the evening. I hope meeting with Steve was nice. Anyways, I should be going because it's a little late but if you need me then you can inform one of the other nurses or researchers. They can get a hold of me and then I can get here as soon as possible."

Quietly she looked down and stepped back towards the door again. She was glad that Steve and Bucky had spoken. Perhaps it would ease the Sergeant about being in the hospital a little bit. He needed someone to talk to besides her. "Anyways, I should go."

"Cali?"

[ he grins for a second, hoisting the backpacks better onto his shoulders. he can’t shrug, but if he could, he would. there wasn’t probably a local bus that could, but if they were lucky, not that they could be considered lucky, there could be one that’d take them up to maybe Pennsylvania or somewhere near that and then to somewhere in the midwest, maybe take a train to California.

"There’s got to be something that can take us a bit of the ways. Maybe if we can just get to Chicago or somethin’ like that, we could take a train. You think Stark is going to help us?"

[ they reach the road and he glances around for a bus stop sign. it takes a few seconds, and they’re going slow because of her injury, but he finds one and gestures for her to follow him.

[ ashley nodded a little bit, looking down at her feet. they could take a bus to chicago then a train or two from there. as long as they were constantly moving then they should be okay. ]

"Yeah. Let's find a bus schedule and find the best one to Chicago. The first tone to leave is the one that we need to take. Okay? Getting out of this area is first priority."

[ then she looked up at him with a slight frown. ]

"Look, I'm going to slow you up and I know it. If you want to, you can go without me. I don't want HYDRA to catch you because you were dealing with me."

"I’m fine with it in here, they don’t need to spend time doing that. You’ve all got better things to do, like winning this war." He shrugs, setting the food tray down on the cot, and gently sitting down next to it.

He pauses for a moment, looking down at his hands. Honestly, he wanted to go talk to Steve, he could use some familiar company. But Steve wasn’t supposed to be affected by HYDRA tests, and was probably incredibly busy. It takes some time, but he takes a deep breath in, deciding that Steve, for one, doesn’t need to see him like this, and two, was too busy at the time.

"Tell him not to. Just say that I’m glad he’s still alive and he’d better not piss off any Germans because I can’t save him this time." His feet tap the floor, wondering if he’s mistaken with his decision. But he can find that out later.

She let out a small sigh, nodding then excusing herself from the room. Despite what he said Ashley wasn't going to do it. There was no doubt that Bucky wanted to see his best friend and it was something the researcher could sympathize with. Quietly she moved down one of the hallways to Colonel Phillips office. There she waited until the famed man known as Captain America stepped out. It wasn't too long, luckily. Before he could get far she began to speak rather quickly and rambled- as she always did- about how James wanted to see him to make sure he was. Of course the man agreed and headed that way.

Not wanting to disturb them, she turned and headed back to her sector of the place. There wasn't much else for her to do except let the two be. They were best friends and she highly doubted they'd want her sitting in one their conversation. So, she took a seat at her desk where she'd wait until he needed her.

he still referred to himself, in his mind at least, as james. it wouldn’t leave. he might say a different name, but he was still the same guy.

"Good to go? Yeah."

he quickly makes his way up to the front desk, thanking the nurse there and handing back the papers, and coming back. he gestures to the door and leads ahead to check that there’s not anyone out there. because it is, in fact, getting early ( by that, early morning) and soon they should be found. that wouldn’t end well. if they could find a bus that’d take them further than the outskirts, they’d be in business

"I got supplies."

he told her simply, as they got out of the doors, and glancing around, he ducked behind the bushes to grab the backpacks, and slung them over his shoulders as the continued down the sidewalk.

"I’m thinking a bus of some sort?"

"Are there any buses going extremely far away from here? Like maybe the other side of the country?

[ she looked at the backpack, her gaze curious as to what he got but it could wait until they got on a bus to safety. the current objective was just getting somewhere that was safe and away from hydra's eyes and ears. even if everything he got her was the wrong size or something that she was allergic to, being safe is what mattered. ]

"If HYDRA is mainly located around here then we'll be safer in California. Maybe go to Stark to see if he can help us."

"You can’t sleep in a sleeping bag. And you’re not hiding. All you could do in the field was nursing. Minus Agent Carter she’s not a nurse. I’m not really completely sure what she does. Guess it doesn’t really matter.” He shrugged, pushing himself up and off the bed. Quickly, his hands run over his face as he tries to decide what to do with the bed that was already in the room. After a moment of deliberation, he pushes it off to the side ( which takes more effort than he thought it would) and pulls the cot into it’s place. By that point, she’s back.

He completely skipped over the fact that she had food, “Steve’s here?” If he was, Bucky needed to see him. Just to see that he was alive. And not someone else’s account of him being alive. “No, you can stay. But is he here?” A moment passes, “Is he okay?”

"I can manage. You deserve to have what makes you comfortable." She looked to the bed for a moment. "I can have someone remove that to give you more room in here if you would like. It shouldn't take that long." Ashley gave a slight smile at that, leaning against the wall beside the door with a smile.

When he asked about Steve, there was a nod. However, it was sad. "Um, yes he is. He's meeting with Colonel Phillips now and was planning to come and visit you. I can go and see if he's available now. Then I can leave you two to talk." She smiled a bit, looking down.

Tony couldn’t help but laugh at how nervous she was, and he waved it off with a smile, laughing a little again when she started to rub at her temples. He couldn’t imagine what it was like to be that nervous that you had to physically stop yourself from talking, but then again, he’d had no reason to be that nervous.
image

“Perfect, I’ll see you later, then? Unless you’ve anything else hiding up your sleeve that you want to show me?” Honestly, he wouldn’t be surprised, and it’d probably be amazing, considering what she’d made so far. So he waited for an answer with a smile, arms folded over his chest.

She looked down shyly, mentally telling herself to calm down. Ashley was nervous around normal people so being around one of her heroes only made the nerves that much worse. Surprisingly since joining SHIELD, her nerves had been lessened. Imagine what she would be like if she hadn't ever joined them. Probably an absolute train wreck.

"Well, sir, I have some other ideas except I don't believe they are applicable here. I understand you don't make weapon and some of my designs are just that. However there is one that might work. It's a sort of collar that delivers waves that effect the vocal cords of it's wearer so it renders them speechless." Ashley spoke quickly, offering a smile.
