Paintings by Miroslav Zgabaj

Miroslav Zgabaj is a self-taught artist born in 1992, living in Prešov, East Slovakia.

I am fascinated by the human body, especially by faces and the emotions that a person is experiencing internally. My creative production revolves around realism - a person, and abstract expression - emotions. I try to capture the elusive moments in people’s lives and create an atmosphere for enhancing emotion.

Pain-Bodies

“Pain body” is a term coined by spiritual teacher Eckart Tolle. A pain-body is a kind of mental bundle. It is a memory or a few connected memories associated with some negative and painful emotion. It is ongoing which is to say that it is more than just a fleeting thought.

It comes back to us again and again. It is always present within us and sits in our psyche the way a rotting log sits in the bottom of a pond and like the log every so often it emits a noxious expulsion in the form of a bubble which rises to the surface.

The rotting log produces stinking methane. The pain-body produces painful undercutting and negative self-talking. “I am useless”, “I am a failure”, “nobody will ever love me”, “I am a disappointment to everybody” the bubbles rise again and again.

We cannot deal with pain bodies by suppressing them. It doesn’t work.  We must reach down and dredge it up and confront it. We must see it for what it is. This takes its power away forever. Such bodies can only exist in the deep recesses of our psyche. When brought to light they perish.
