Lending an Ear

“That’s my expertise.” He said, sitting next to Garth. It was, but he also was getting worried. Not like Garth was the biggest open book, but he kept dodging the question.
“Do you need a break?” asked Dick as he noticed how he kept looking back to the sea. This kind of life was tiring, there was moments they just needed to disconnect. But he knew how hard it could be for any of them to even consider a break.
“Pretty sure you got enough vacation days lined up with Arthur to work out a break for you.”
He was one to talk, he knew no one them saw this as a job and that was part of why it was so hard for them to take a break. But he was still going to suggest it.

“You’re getting vacation days? I don’t even get dental.” It’s a joke that Garth has learned through osmosis; a hundred sitcoms that indicated it was funny, but he had no real understanding of why. It’s another thing about the surface world that he is content to not understand.

“I’ll take a vacation when you do.” he replied, knowing full well that neither of them would manage to take that deal. The temptation to hang up his metaphorical cape had lured Garth away more than once, but somehow he always found his way back to the world of heroes.

The prince shrugged, “I don’t think you can take a break from lives like ours.”

"No." Dick shook his head and stepped aside, silently inviting the other man in. Sure, he didn't appreciate being woken up at the crack of dawn but he wasn't going to turn away a friend. "Can I get you something to eat or drink?" He asked, shutting and locking the door. "I took the day off." He explained, shuffling into the kitchen and turning on the coffee maker.

Dick arched a brow at Garth’s comment, a quiet laugh rumbling his chest. “It’s rare but it happens.” He says, another yawn leaving him. “You can take the guest room if you need a place to stay.” He told the older man. He didn’t want to come off as rude but he had planned on utilizing his day off to catch up on sleep.

“I probably should have waited until sunrise.” he said apologetically. Sure, he wasn’t entire certain when that was, but Garth probably could have gotten away with standing soaking wet in the harbor for a few more hours with only a couple odd stares. He runs a hand through damp curls, “Are you sure? I don’t mean to bother you.”

Lending an Ear

continued from here with @aquarad

It was probably just luck that he had managed to get to Garth before he had indeed decided to hide in a place where Dick would have needed to commandeer some kind of vehicle to get to him. Not that it would stop him. In this line of work friends where hard to make and hard to keep, you never knew when someone was going to be gone for good. So Dick treasured his friendships, and the one he had with Garth and the rest of the original Titans was more like siblings at this point than just friends.

“You know it’s going to take more than that to stop me. Maybe teamwork is possible and we just need to see how to tackle it.”

That earns a wry smile. The Titans were all fiercely loyal, but Dick tenacity was something else all together. Dick could probably find Atlantis using willpower alone. “I don’t think anything could stop you.”

That didn’t stop him from briefly considering jumping into the sea for a head start. It’s a fleeting thought, gone a split second after he returns his gaze back towards the sea.

“That might be true if we were fighting some thing. Lately I think all my problems are caused by me.”

" we've been through enough together to be able to avoid the silent treatment. come on. out with it. let's face your dilemma together. "

“If I was giving you the silent treatment, I’d be at the bottom of the ocean right now.” His modus operandi of literally hiding from his problems only works when he has a head start; Garth fully believes Dick could track him down in the Mariana Trench if he wanted to.

“Not every problem is solved with teamwork.”

That seemed to be a common theme with them, downplaying things. “I’ll have to come and visit sometime.” The Romani said, drawing his legs up to his chest. Laying his head on his arm that he propped on the back of the couch, he stifled a yawn. “That’s good. It’s been pretty quiet in Gotham & Bludhaven as well.” It was strange now that he came to think about.

He assumes Dick is just being polite with his offer, but it makes Garth smile anyway. The bottom of the ocean isn’t exactly hospitable for the average human, though the city had made improvements on quarters for air-breathing guests. Garth had realized long ago that it made much more sense to visit his friends on their turf than share his home.

“I didn’t know it could be quiet in Gotham.”

They were going to start with meaningless small talk. Okay then. Dick drained his mug and made himself another before heading toward the living room, taking a seat on the couch. “I’m doing well, thank you for asking. How are things in Atlantis?” Getting a large sip, the dark-haired man set it down on the coffee table, turning to face Garth.

“Atlantis is...the same as always.” Neutral statements like this worked wonders in the sunken city, but Garth realizes Dick would recognize he was being deliberately vague. He follows it with another meaningless statement; “The people seem happy.”

Dick hummed as he pours the coffee into two large cups, handing one off to Garth. “There’s cream and sugar in the pantry. Or if prefer milk, it’s in the fridge.” He personally liked his black. Taking a sip of his coffee, he waited patiently for the Atlantean to tell him why he came over so late.

Paying no mind to the temperature of the cup, Garth had already taken a gulp when Dick offered sugar. He usually would prefer sugar, but politely shook his head. The trip from Atlantis to the surface world was long and not something Garth did for a casual chat. In addition to Garth’s usual awkwardness, it felt rude to barge in and immediately talk about his own problems. Instead, he takes a smaller sip of coffee before easing into a proper conversation.

“How have you been? It’s hard to keep up to date back home.”
