Following shadows

- closed starter for @the-primordialburst -

It started after a while since she left the forest, while she wandered through the claustrphobic alleys that ran like veins through the outer areas of Noxus. This feeling of being watched, of being followed.

She thought it came from the uneasiness that resulted from having come back home at first. Being so unsure about looking for the family she left so many years earlier, trying to learn again the way of life of the country, of the people. She had even started playing along with the rules to survive. Accepting challenges and making a show out of her basic skills if it was needed, but without ever reaching dangerous levels of violence, just making sure that people knew she could be a threat if she wanted to. It seemed to be enough for now. She was satisfied with just that.

She was trying to truly understand what she had ran from, and why, beyond the specific reasons that were forced on her. This test she was putting herself through would have finally settled her thoughts about her past decisions and about her current beliefs. It wasn’t easy and, despite the Noxian ideals weren’t all that bad beyond the aggressive shell, she still didn’t share their view of the world.

This was fine. Weeks had gone by, she got out of troubles in one piece, met new people and old, forgotten faces. She wasn’t going to leave the place yet, she wasn’t done with it, but she expected this feeling to go away eventually at least…

It didn’t. And, when she finally got to see the brim of a cloak sweeping beyond a corner, she was sure that it wasn’t depending on her anymore.

It was late at night. The moon was high and provided little light, together with the rare torches that were held up on the walls. She breathed quietly and looked at her surroundings while staying still for a few moments. Then, in the blink of an eye, she was no more. She was standing on the flat top of one of the buildings, looking down, trying to distinguish the figures that still roamed the streets so late at night. She could see the inn she was walking back to from up there. It was so close… but she couldn’t reach her room like that just yet.

“Show yourself,” she muttered in the end, more to herself than to anyone - if they could even hear her.

Show yourself...

But nothing came of it. There what followed was but more silence. The dark night and its bright stars was her only accompaniment for quite a while. There was nothing she could find down below except the usual going ons of the Noxian city, yet as she turned around, she was met with the exact figure she sought after. The two of them, standing alone atop the building’s top. That figure stood there, the one she had seen in the corners of her eyes for so many days now. Was it her imaginations? No... But it was certainly a familiar sight. There was seemingly no magic that came from the man, just long flayed robes and a crooked wide brim hat that hid all but the long flowing bitch black hair that fell down to shoulders. “And what curious sight it is, to find you here.” Hissed out quiet upon the midnight air, words almost stolen right from her lungs before head would tilt up to reveal the mangled visage of the Cloaked figure. Eye stitched shut, lips torn from flesh with a cheek burned away to reveal ligaments, muscle, and teeth. “Finding what you seek? I’d imagine... You think so many answers are to be found here, but what has that gotten you this far, hm?”

A Familiar Saved from a Wraith

[She was indeed gone. Safe for now, but who knew for how long, hidden between the green, soft arms of tall bushes not too far away from the field. She was now laying on her back, looking up, staring at the sky. There was no resource of light that could help her distinguish the tips of the leaves or anything else that was closer, and the blackness of the sky never looked so deep and hungry. Was she staring up? Was she gazing at an abyss? Had she ended in the right place? She could feel the ground, the grass, she guessed so, but never she remembered to suffer from light damage this severely. She was defenseless there, if the ghost wanted to chase her she would have no means to defend herself. But the spirit… Did it do this to protect her? Was it still there with him? Why? She had several reasons for wishing for a quick recovery, she had to go…

In the meantime, the familiar faced Veigar without an ounce of fear. Quite the contrary; its small and delicate figure burned of the brightest fire, a real small star in the middle of the glade. It waited for Veigar to get close, it seemed to listen, but it gave no reaction at all, not a single one. It ignored the cage surrounding it, the deep anger in his words, the fury its attack had provoked. But Veigar had seen what it was actually capable to do. Mimi was the only one who suffered the full consequences of its will, and maybe it was better in that way. The only flaw was that exact incapability to really fill the hole that the light made when it erased what had become unnecessary. Unnecessary, futile, dangerous even - more than dedicating her whole life to the darkest warlock of the continent could be.

But Veigar. The stubborn, megalomaniac madman that sought to take the lead with the strings of the Universe. He wasn’t affected in the way he should have been, not completely. His force of will and strenght of spirit were admirable; he even succeeded to taint this purified life, he even gave a face and a name to one of the causes of such a chaos. If until now his presence had been allowed despite the damage and mistakes he already made over and over, it was becoming unacceptable. If he couldn’t live with the knowledge of what really happened and with the impossibility to change anything, the familiar would try again to bend him to the rules rather than letting the witch be cursed further by them.

So, when the magic was shot forward, the luminous being disappeared in a cluster of white essences, just to reappear very close to the other. It was flying forward, a glowing arrow. Its aim, the darkness. Weakening him was the purpose. What would be next, maybe he didn’t want to know.]

What a cute little trick you poor pitiful thing.” Taunted The Dark Magus as he ethereal form pulled off a similar power, melting like molten shadow into the earth and letting the shining spirit shot past above him. Like a reanimated corpse he reemerged, both claws now blazing with shining darkness. Swirling stars and shining galaxies roamed from his palm down his wrists, powers to shape worlds and tear reality in two. Powers not so unlike the small little familiar before him. It was no coincidence they held almost mirror abilities of one another. It was from his magic that this creature was formed. It was a being from the Universe’s will just as he too had been molded. An amalgamation let to fester and grow far beyond initial imaginations. “You thought it that easy to take her from me? To make this mockery of a world and dangle her in front of me like a toy, just to snuff me out each chance you have?” Claws trembled with excruciating power, shaking as they rose up to the air, before shutting themselves tight and extinguishing the Anti-Arcane force that spawned within them. From the sky above Mimi could see two shining twinkling stars flying past the night sky, ones that seemed to hasten and grow ever steadily. “What a waste of time this whole charade is. I will never cease, I will be erased a thousand times until I find my answer, and you will never cease to be will you? we are both ageless, so save the time, and let us skip to the end. This little plane of existence shall be left just as pristine and fit as I left it, just, without, her.” The Anti Arcanist placed his hands behind his back, as the ravenous shadows that formed him coalesced to a more passive form. His back straightened, his eyes gleamed. “Name anything you wish little thing, and it shall be yours. We could mold this world together you know, why let two sides of the same coin fight, when together, it could be so much more. Or not... Or kill me, or erase me, or shatter me, or turn me to dust but I won’t leave. You cannot get rid of me. Do you think I fear that pain? Do you think I fear that abyss? I am that darkness. You cannot erase that which is nothingness, that is why I will always remain. So do what you must, but know, it will never work.

A Familiar Saved from a Wraith

[She could see she had really striken something beyond the surface of the cunning orator this time. When she let her anger outburst, what did she expect? A laugh, maybe. Silence? Or another searing retort? She didn’t even think about it, she only wanted to let some of that weight that he was helping to build up go, she didn’t need anything nor anyone else to worsen her problems. Ironically, instead of pushing him away, this brought him closer to her than she could believe. There was surprise in his concealed eyes, but she could feel it regardless. Perhaps, even disappointment, or was it something different…

She remained petrified on the spot when he got in front of her. Now he could see those amber eyes from so near. She held her breath back. The sensation was indescribable. So strong, in fact, that she returned to herself while he was already circling her, arguing against her idea to let the whole matter go. She turned with her head to follow him, she tried to raise her arms to her shoulders as if to protect herself from whatever he could do, but then stopped. She had no time to reason over these reactions, it was all so confused all of a sudden, her head almost spun, but his speech kept her anchored to reality. They were cursed. They would always be a cause of pain. She didn’t agree, she didn’t want to! But she could certainly tell that he was being more of a trouble than of help right now. She breathed out, panting slightly, now staring at the menacing shape that his darkness was taking If he suddenly attacked her now, she wouldn’t have been able to react in time, no.

On the other hand, the familiar looked more and more alert. It floated higher when the other moved around them, it glowed stronger to contrast the darkness he was spreading, It definitely prepared to act in order to protect the witch, no matter what the real threat was. But it knew. The wraith was hovering dangerously close to secrets that weren’t to be even referred to. Its wings quivered harder and its fluff spiked up when the other started to raise his voice. But did he notice? Did he care? Could he really realize what he had brought to this world?

Her coldness was challenged again when he resumed to speak of destiny. She winced visibly when he opened the tear in the tree to open the portal to that alien space, but then… Her heart skipped a beat. They were tied to a third figure. A mad mage, he said. A clue. Another deep, shaky breath. Was the solution to everything really this close? What would she find inside there? And who was this mage? Did she… know this being?]

How do you know such things… who are you, really…?

[She took a step forward at last, trying to peek at the portal. But then, a lightning. One so bright and hot white that she fell on her knees without even realizing it, her eyes on her eyelids, but they moved a little too late. She was blinded by that strong light, so heavily that she could barely see now. She didn’t know what happened, but there was only one of the three living ones present that could do such a thing. She remained on the ground, shaking, and did the only thing she could when not knowing what would come next; she teleported somewhere else, hidden to both the wraith or the little creature.

It was exactly the familiar who emitted that light, and whoever would be standing near the edges of the forest would have still been able to see the surge of energy that sought to dissipate the darkness. All those malevolent shapes of solidified shadow who loomed over them, the portal itself, the ghost… Veigar. That was enough. He wasn’t allowed to go any further than that. He made a mistake to give the spirit a physical form. Now he should have faced the consequences of going against the rules.]

For a ghastly abomination, Veigar too was panting just as heavily as she was. For the first time, she could notice that this moving shadow breathed, as up to now his movements were frozen and robotic. Still, they seemed to calm down as he stopped his speech, The Dark Creature recollecting himself as his gaze never once wavered from staring into Mimi’s shining blue eyes.  “I was the first to be cursed  by the fate you have now.” She stepped closer, his voice grew deeper, eager, hungrier. “Yes, step inside, reclaim your destiny.” Another step. “Put an end to the cycle, break the wheel,” Her hand reached out, so very close, just mere inches from touching the abyssal darkness that seemed to have no end. Veigar’s jaw clenched as tight as steel, his own sharp claws twitching in impatient excitement. “What are you so afraid o-” With eyes wide and dilated, his undead heart pounding to no end, what a crash it was when the force of the skies ripped apart the tree’s portal in twain. The shadow magic exploded in a furious force of Anti-Arcane, while the tree’s wood and splinters shot out in all directions as well. Perhaps it was a miracle Mimi remained unharmed if thrown back and blinded, or maybe it was an active choice by the caster of the magic, Veigar however, was not protected. With barely a second to react, All Veigar could do was shield his eyes before being shot across the field, laid down and blooded by twisted nature, scorched and singed by his own magic, and with blood that boiled with the fury of a star in its final seconds.  Mimi was gone, the unmissable signature of her teleportation magic sang through the air, taunting Veigar as he picked himself up from the ground like an animate scarecrow, his eyes burning brighter than they had ever before as his neck snapped back to stare at the Familiar. “You.” An arm that had been twisted backwards snap back into position as he gloated closer. “You, pathetic, aberration against nature. Unholy spawn of the dredges of the Universe, Dare to harm I. I tried to play peaceful for the sake of her life, but she is gone.” No true villain speaks without acting, and as his silver tongue spoke with devilish intentions, his claw raised up a cage of black steel that erupted from the wreckage of his portal. Solidified shadow and sinister steel tore up from the earth and enveloped the creature like a cage, arcs of black lightning striking between. “I will pick apart your every atom, I will crush your mass until it tears a hole in this accursed reality, and I will take pleasure in EVERY SECOND OF IT.” His white shining maw opened in a sickly smile, as his free claw burned with shining black swirling stardust. With that hand reeled back, it solidified to a tight ball, and was tossed forward to burn through the very soul of this universe.
