Casey wrote a queer political romance novel, Matthew made a queer rom com with some politics sprinkled in.

Those are different things.

I wish they could have kept Rafael Luna and made Richards the villain he is in the book... But this is amazon. They invested in this film and they want their money's worth. They want this film to appeal to as many people as possible.

Making the republican candidate a sexual predator who goes around hacking private email servers to out queer kids to win an election isn't going to fly with the conservative/republican audience (though I don't know if they'd watch a queer rom com in the first place but I digress).

They changed the queen to a king and changed the family name as to not piss off the real British royal family. They didn't make the king as blatantly homophobic and racist as the queen is in the book so it wouldn't piss off the royalists.

And I remember seeing a post with tweets from the creator of... I don't remember what show - some cartoon that aired on Disney I think - where they explained all the things Disney wanted them to change in the show and the things they had to fight to keep.

We know the MAAP told Matthew to take out the Paris love scene or they'd give it an R rating. We know he said fuck you to that and kept it in. We don't know how much amazon's execs gave him shit for before officially signing off on the version we can watch now.

They cut an hours worth of stuff, and it probably wasn't all *just* for time.

We got the most sensual and intimate sex scene I have ever seen in any piece of media, we had a conversation between a mother and son where she basically named the entire acronym before Alex told her he's bi. And then she just accepts it and reminds him about safe *anal* sex.

They had Uma Thurman say bottoming!

We don't know how much Matthew López has had to fight amazon for any of those things. And how much he's had to compromise.

Just something to keep in mind.

Having said that - release the deleted scenes amazon!!

Ok so apparently the RWRB movie was 3 hours long before the cuts and if we memed and shitposted and fandomed our way into a second season of Good Omens, I ABSOLUTELY BELIEVE we can do the same for that extra hour of content. No need for narrative consistency. Release that hour of deleted scenes, you cowards. Pretty please?

The V&A Visit

Continuing my technically untitled series of learning about things referenced in the book, I'm looking at things referenced in Alex & Henry's visit to the V&A Museum. This whole scene, near the end of chapter ten, has so many wonderful references in it. It is too long to condense into one post - even the quote alone is too long! - so i've broken it up in a similar way to how I broke up Alex's queer history posts. The first post will be up in about an hour.

In the half light, the room is alive. The vaulted roof seems to stretch up forever into the inky London sky, and beneath it the room is arranged like a city square somewhere in Florence, climbing columns and towering altars and archways. Deep basins of fountains are planted in the floor between statues on heavy pedestals, and effigies lie behind black doorways with the Resurrection carved into their slate. Dominating the entire back wall is a colossal, Gothic choir screen carved from marble and adorned with ornate statues of saints, black and gold and imposing, holy. -Chapter 10, Red White & Royal Blue

Statues - Zephyr, Narcissus, Pluto and Proserpine, Jason (Argonauts), Samson Slaying a Philistine James I & George Villers Chancel chapel from Church of Santa Chiara, Florence; Proverb; David & Jonathan

Am I reading every interview with Matthew López that drops? YES.

This one? With Observer? It may be my favorite yet.

López dives into his connection to the book, the story, and Alex Claremont Diaz.

He talks about the merit of romantic comedies and how the staples in the genre are built to last. He discusses how he made Red, White & Royal Blue with the intent of it standing the test of time with the rom-com greats.

He brings up how important it was to him to have this film represent gay sex — it was in his OG pitch! Like:

"It was really important to me as well in a mainstream love story. We talked about this as a rom-com and there other times we talked about it as a love story. As a love story, it was really important to me that the audience understand that these two young men are deeply connected—emotionally, intellectually and physically. Their physical connection is a huge part of what binds them. It would have been absolutely the decision I would make if it was a man and a woman. So I was going apply the same storytelling and requirements on my queer film that I think anybody would on a on a heterosexual film."

I seriously want to copy and paste every single quote and write about how much I love them, but I'd much rather you click the link and give it a read yourself. We can always chat here!
