She can’t mean the words that she speaks; the words that echo and repeat.Love stories ended - all of them, one day - but not theirs, Arthur had told himself. And not like this. Not whilst the proposal lingered at the back of his throat, his question a breath away. Words that would now never be spoken, but that had been echoed and rehearsed a thousand times. Words that Arthur knew belonged to Gwen, but that he could now never give to her.He wasn’t supposed to lose her. Not today. Not in this lifetime, and not like this. “As am I,” he whispered, refusing to bow to his need to beg her to reconsider. He had no intentions of the indignity of asking her to reconsider. Those words came with certainty, knowing the hurt they’d cause. But he knew she’d needed to speak them all the same.

“I did what I had to do,” he says. “Your father deserved it.”
There’s a silence that falls between them, Arthur’s chest heaving as he tries to take in this revelation — this betrayal. His brow crumples as he tries to recognise the man in front of him ; the man he thought he could call a friend. A fake. A liar. A murderer.
