The whole Clay thing is interesting for sure. I was a huge fan myself. But what's weird is a few yrs later, Adam Lambert came along. He was openly flamboyant and v v camp, and they didn't change him at all. He even had a gay kissing scandal (1/2)

2/3 and said he was never hiding who he was. The show runners said they weren’t concerned about America not voting for a gay contestant. And he won. Ofc he fell flat after and is only now hitting his stride, so Idk what changed for that to happen.

3/3 New contracts? I’ll have to research. Simon left the show after the next season amid rumors of a huge falling out with the show’s head honcho. I have to wonder if it had to do with residuals from Adam. Like I said..I need to research. :)

___________

Very very interesting. I wonder why too. Ofcourse, I am so happy for Adam. But you are right, this needs more research

Adam Lambert didn’t win that year, though. Kris Allen won, and was like a dark horse candidate because everyone assumed Adam would win. I remember how nasty Simon was to Adam in the beginning, calling him “too cabaret” which was the way Simon hand waved Adam’s theatrical background/flamboyance. He was a massive fan favorite, though.

Historians on Sexuality

Het Historian: Well, as passionate as these letters between two people of the same sex are, we can't be sure that they were anything more than friends. They can't be considered what we now call call 'gay', because obviously they were married to someone of the opposite gender and that means they were obviously heterosexual.
Queer community: *looks into the camera like they're on the Office*
#i haven't blogged in a month but i have to say this because what a load of fucking bullshit#written by someone who has never actually read a history paper on sexuality#or certainly never understood one#because no respected historian writes this??#there is a damn good reason that historians don't use terms like gay and homosexual to describe sexuality#especially pre 1800#its because those sexualities /as we understand them/ didn't exist#sexuality is a social construction#they're talking about a social and cultural experience and understanding of sexuality#no one is arguing that they were straight#just that those are inappropriate terms#which considering how much tumblr focuses on the correct terminology when talking about things like sexuality and gender identity#should come pretty easily#but this website is its own contradiction most of the time#i literally used love letters two men wrote to each other#in conjunction with court records#to argue that homosexual wasn't the best term to use for before 1800#and I focused only on men because you really can't put same sex love/romance of men and women in the same category#because their experiences were just SO DIFFERENT#someone in my year did their dissertation on women#and dedicated massive entire sections to terminology#she settled on queer#which a lot of historians use#because it's a more blanket term that signifies non heterosexuality but doesn't have the same social connotations as lesbian#sorry i had to get that off my chest#you should meet some historians who write about sexuality#because this is at the core of what they do
