The old school lack of transparency on tumblr is amazing because you assume the people you follow must all be equivalent to you and then you see someone write “I brought my youngest to college today” and someone else write “my mom wouldn’t let me listen to Ariana Grande when I was a kid” and then your head explodes

honestly one of the best things we can do for ourselves is realize that people of different ages than us can still be the same kind of person as us. it's humbling and it gives everyone involved a sense of continuity, and it busts those stupid generational stereotypes media is so fond of.

Another AO3 thing I’m curious about, how do yall decide if something is good enough to read? Usually I follow a rule of 1 kudos for every 10 hits. One because it’s easy math and two it’s yet to fail me. Thoughts? Do you just go for it and pray it’s good?

I have never ever once in years of reading fic on ao3 let the stats decide whether or not I give something whose title/tags/summary catches my interest a shot

For reference mine was I was so mad at the canon ending for my favourite character in an otome game that I wrote fanfic to fix it

I have a lot of feelings about the rise of he would not fucking say that attitudes in fandom spaces and the paralysing effect it can have on creators. As a writer i think it’s important to just write what feels true to you and not what you think others will “approve” of. Like even as a reader i have enjoyed a variety of different characterisations that all work because the writer makes them work for a particular story. And a fic that’s written out of character to some will be in character to others. Writing fic is not your job you’re not being paid it’s your hobby please. Make them as close to canon as possible. Make them completely different. Who cares! Have fun! Have so much fun! There is an audience for every kind of fic and every kind of character interpretation i promise

True because as a joke or general gripe it's valid, but in practice it's not always the case. More times than none (and on AO3 far more than Wattpad because different writer demographics spur different writing styles) I have read fics that made me think, "Huh, I guess he would say that in that scenario." Quite often, the original media shows us few facets of a character in a limited number of scenarios. Especially with film and media made for mass consumption, "he" often only "says" things that some executive signed off on as profitable/acceptable content. The whole point of much fanfic is to see what a character could be under different circumstances or to expand on what we already know of them.

Lastly, every fanfic writer is granted the right to respond "He says whatever I want him to because this is my fic." Don't like, don't read!

As a 90′s kid, it blows my mind that origami youtube videos exist. You can look up any model and watch a pair of manicured hands assemble the thing in real time, in full color, in 3D, with cheerful flute music in the background. When I was little, you had a library book with no words and these esoteric little dotted lines and arrows and it was just you, your hands, your paper, and the cruel, uncaring eyes of God.
