“Sorry, habit.” Derek apologized and shrugged as he pulled his phone out, to scroll through his contact list. “I may still have an informant that lives there, maybe I can get them from the cop stand of view, not wolf.”

Pavel watched him closely, obviously curious but unsure, “An informant?” he asked, shifting to sit, unconsciously showing off his slender body again in that form fitting black.

“Every detective have informants everywhere where they can stay out of jail for information.” Derek explained and tried not to let his eyes trail down the slender and fit body. “They’re protected and unknown to other cops if they are only to one detective.”

“What if another cop arrests your informant?” Pavel considered him, that sharp brain turning over all these new facts with ease, “What if your informant feeds you misleading info. Or frames someone else.”

“If they get arrested by someone else, it’s their fault. The deal is I don’t arrest them for information.” Derek hummed and looked over to Pasha, chuckling softly. “They go to jail for obstructing justice and they have no more protection. A lot of them rather have protection than jail. A few of mine are upstanding people that just want to do good or just wants certain things in return. One of them is an old lady who lives alone so I come over and help out around the house, she feeds me information since she lives in a bad neighborhood.”

“Do you help kittens our of trees too?” Pavel smiled slightly, head cocking to the side as he contemplated the man before him, “Are you really this…noble, or is there more to it?” he was a pretty good judge of liars and he was curious. He was also distracted..Hale was very attractive.

“Only if a really adorable little girl’s kitten is stuck up the tree. Being a wolf helps.” Derek chuckled and looked over to Pasha. “This is how I was raised, despite some rough things in my past.” He answered, shrugging gently. “My mother was the same way and I would like to be like her in my way.” He added with a soft smile. “She didn’t rule with fear and power like most alphas do, but with respect.”

“I am looking forward to seeing you do so.” Pavel murmured, believing him for the first time, leaning back and relaxing, also for the first time. “So…tell me about yourself?” he murmured.

“I’m pretty sure I just did.” Derek teased and looked around the dark room. “How about we do this in a lighter room and over some delicious food? Coming back from wolfsbane makes me starving.”

The young assassin hesitated before nodding, “I can meet you somewhere.” he plucked his fingers over the form fitting black, “This isn’t really something to wear down at your local pizza joint.” the smile he flashed was bright and engaging but very fleeting before he looked back down and got to his feet. “I’ll meet you there?”

Derek looked down at himself, seeing the clothes all dirty and bloodied. “Same. How about the diner just outside the city in a hour?” He asked, already wanting to see more of the bright smile he just saw.

“I’ll see you there.” A small smile this time, a softer brightness, and he swung up into the rafters of the house and up out of the skylight above. disappearing like a shadow, or a ghost.

An hour later though a nicely dressed, cherubic faced, curly haired young man took a seat at the diner outside town, and ordered a lemonade as he waited, nervously for the other man to show.

“Black cat.” Derek muses to himself and managed to get himself home, dressed and cleaned like nothing ever happened. He changed into his good jeans and a Henley before making his way to the diner.

He walked in and used his nose to pinpoint Pasha, smiling softly when he sees the adorable male. “Hey.” He slid into the booth, ordering some coffee.

“Hey, fancy meeting you here.” Pavel’s lips quirked up playfully as he sipped his drink, smiling up at the waitress as she brought over a plate of hot chips to share between the two of them. “How have you been since we last saw each other.”

“I was in high school when I heard it.” Derek sighed and looked over to the other. “You’re Pasha. The lone survivor.” He replied and sat down on the floor. “I’m a cop, I can look into files.” He said and shook his head. “He set us all back like twenty years, ruining everything my mother fought for. Peace.”

The young man sighed and reached up to take off his mask, revealing a delicately fine boned face. “Yes.” he acknowledged, green-gold eyes meeting his, “I was the only survivor. I saw, everything.”

“I’m truly sorry for what happened to your family.” Derek whispered and shook his head. “He was your first wolf killing, wasn’t he?” He asked softly. “I was a rookie then, first officer on scene.”

“Yes. He tried to kill me too.” Pavel looked at him, a tense, and unhappy expression on his face, “I defended myself.” he shrugged turning away.

“I’m not blaming you, he killed your family, if I had the chance to kill mine, I would’ve done the same thing but my uncle took that away from me.” Derek replied and sighed as he looked at the younger male. “A human, someone who I thought I could trust completely, ended up being a hunter, burning my family in their home, wolfsbaned them in so they couldn’t escape.”

Green gold eyes considered him, “That sounds…awful.” he inclined his head and smiled softly, “So we have both lost. You to humans…me to a wolf.” he shrugged, “What a world we live in…”

Derek chuckled and curled his hand around Pasha’s arm to leech the pain away until he cannot smell it anymore, pulling it away. “I will see what I can do about the lower city wolves, okay?”

The boy tensed the instant he was touched, remaining tense, like a taut wire or a creature ready to flee from danger. He only relaxed once he was released again, bright eyes watching Derek.

“What can you do?”

Derek, thanks to being an alpha and a born wolf, was already healed but he was laying there to hear the weapons, hearing the faint clinking of the metal. He snapped his hand out once again to pull the smaller body down, using his legs to pin the other’s legs down and held his weight on top of whatever this guy is. “Now, tell me who sent you.” He asked, claws digging into the black clothes and smelling the faint scent of blood. “I’m not going to hurt you. I just want information.”

Pavel was fast, but he was human. Close up and personal with a creature like a werewolf, he was never going to come out on top. For the second time he came crashing down on his back. Then he was pinned and claws were digging into his skin.

Green-gold eyes glared up at him behind the black mask and the young man turned his head to the side, ignoring him.

He would not answer.

“Oh come on.” Derek huffed as he pulled back his claws and slowly got off of the smaller male, crouching next to him. “I need to warn my pack if there’s more of you, to not come into the city.”

Those bright eyes fixed on him again  and then narrowed, “There is just me.” he informed him, moving to crouch and trying to hide the wince as his side pulled, “Happy now Hale?”

“What do you have against my kind?” Derek asked and reached out to curl his hand around the smaller male’s wrist, leeching the pain away. “I could smell it on you.” He explained and looked over to him.

Pavel yanked his wrist away, shooting the wolf a guarded look, as though looking for an ulterior motives, “You would have heard of the Lowtown murders no?” he eventually said, giving a little, “15 people were murdered by an Alpha, a rich, powerful Alpha, who was trying to prove a point.”

“That was you, who took them all out?” Derek asked with a soft groan as his wolf features faded away when the wolfsbane started making their appearance in his blood, stumbling to the floor, panting heavily. “I only protect my town.”

“As do I.” Pavel watched him intently, “Do you think me a fool? I’ve seen wolves in the Lower city among the poor. Preying on the poor.”

“That’s the city.” Derek snarled lowly and shook his head. “I have no claim to anything in there. Not my territory.” He replied and laid down on the floor, skin turning pale and sickly. “I’m just a detective for the city. I have no say in those wolves affair. That’s Duke’s territory.” He slurred and struggled to keep his eyes open.

“I’ve been reliably informed that one dead wolf is much like another.” Pavel dropped from the roof to land beside him with lithe grace, “Why are you any different?”

“I was born in a human body, as so was my sisters.” Derek mumbled and groaned as he could feel the wolfsbane really digging into his body, seizing just a bit on the cold ground. “I killed an innocent once, only to save her from the pain of the rejected bite.” He panted and opened his eyes, green eyes dull. “My pack - full of many different species including humans. My mother taught me that I may be a predator but I’m no killer.”

The assassin stood over him, lithe, clothed in black with that black mask over his face. Considering him.

After a moment he crouched and injected something into Derek’s neck.

“We will see. You will have to live to prove it.”

“Ah fuck.” Derek groaned as he felt a needle go into his neck and his body slowly getting rid of the wolfsbane. “Thank you.” He breathed out and closed his eyes, breathing evening out as he just laid there to let his body heal.

“I’m sure you’ll make me regret it,” the young man moved around the room, restless, but unwilling to leave the wolf lying there vulnerable now that he’d made the choice to leave him living.
