The tenderness William treated her with made Mei-Rin feel terrible regret. It was not that she did not want to marry him. He was a perfect match. Handsome, smart, witty… but then, there was she. A person with no past, no connections, no name. Soon after their wedding he would feel what it meant to be married to such a person, and she didn’t want that for him.

The kisses on her hands, then cheek brought a sigh from her chest, and she pulled her hands out of his grasp to wrap her arms around him to pull him close. He was such a precious man. She did hurt him, yes, but what if she hurt him even more after saying this yes he expected?

"I…" she began, hiding her face in his chest. And to think she could be his wife… "Will, if I was completely sure I could make you happy by saying yes, I wouldn’t have hesitated. But I’m afraid I might only hurt you. And I swear, that’s the last thing I want to do to you."

He was a little taken aback when she wrapped her arms around him. He was still for a moment before he gently rubbed her back and just held her, carefully pressing a few kisses to her head. The more he thought about it, he realized that in a marriage he might not be good for her. He had problems showing affection and emotion and he was always working. He could easily distance himself without realizing it and it could hurt the small maid.

"Hush now, you wouldn't hurt anyone." He answered, rubbing her back in small circles. "Especially me." Carefully he kissed her head and carefully sat down with her and pulled her into his lap. Besides, given that they got married he would live on and on and on and he would have to watch her die. He would break if he had to endure that. 

Never had Mei-Rin wanted to hurt this man. At that moment, she was only glad that she had her glasses that would hide any tears that shone in her eyes, as well as strange pain with which she refused. Especially when she heard the tone of William’s voice when he asked her for her reasons…

He looked down at her hands with that emotionless look in his eyes. Not doing anything, just blinking. What the hell was he thinking? For the first time in a long time William T. Spears wanted to weep. He kept still though, staring at her hands before he gave them a reassuring squeeze.

"I'm not mad," he answered, voice slightly softer than his regular monotone voice. "I'm just upset." The man went quiet before he carefully raised her hands to his lips and pressed a soft kiss to each of them. "But, I'm not going to guilt you, I'm not going to pressure you into anything, and I'm going to respect your choice." He said before leaning down and pressing a reassuring kiss to her cheek.
