I’m a teacher doing my best to educate my 8-10 year-old students on “adult” topics (like racism, consent, etc.) in kid-friendly ways. We have a project where they dress up like someone we have studied in Social Studies during the year (typically miners, cowboys, etc.), and I’m always supremely uncomfortable when someone dresses as a Native American. Is there a polite, kid- and parent-friendly way to explain why they shouldn’t do that? Or is this not my place? Thank you in advance!

I’m sure actual educators have a reply to this, but what is the actual educational value of having kids play dress-up to learn history? It feels like it invariably leads to racist shit that teachers are unprepared for, and whatever entertainment/engagement value it provides seems like its hugely outweighed by the bullshit.

New study from Dept of Tell Me Something I Don't Know at No Shit University shows that people from higher social strata tend to overestimate their skill level and are overconfident. I'm not sure what my question is.

You don’t have one, it’s... obvious.

me: "have you seen Moonlight?" dad: "no, I don't like movies with black people"... not sure if it's a cultural thing or he is straight up racist

In what world do you not understand that it’s obviously both.
