I love how "Jaws made people hate sharks" and "The anti-Vietnam War art movement had no effect on the war" both get paraded around as sides to the argument "does fiction affect reality", because it's the two most extreme possible examples for either side.

On one hand, we have the film that the word Blockbuster was literally created to describe acting as bad PR for an animal that people generally either think is evil already or don't think about at all. Like of course that is going to have a wide-scale effect on individual beliefs.

And then on the other hand we have The American Military Industrial Complex. Like, yeah, wow, art failed to defeat the military industrial complex. Fucking shocker. If they point you're trying to make is "art is not enough to challenge the greatest political forces of our time, we need direct collective action" (which to be clear is a cogent point) then great, if it's discussing art's impact on anything less maybe find a better example.

btw my stance is that ship art and fandom content is consumed by like less than 1% of the population, if you're targeting that for 'normalizing' anything instead of focusing on big media projects (or just doing direct action) then you're less concerned with cogent harm and more just want a target you can vent your frustrations and disgust at.
